Yep it’s my favourite distance. This very useful as I’m desperate to break the 1 hr 40 barrier. May just do as time trial but hopefully some races back by December.

Great video as always team. Love your content, always inspiring. My (unofficial) half PB is low 1.40 set a week into lockdown as my race was cancelled. Currently training for a hilly trail half, I often overdo it though so liked the tip on recovery. Keep up the good work!

So I’m 27 from TX certainly I weigh 325lbs and I’m doing my first 13.1 at the end of August. Since I started walking just over a month ago I’ve got to do a mix of 5k 10k & 12k My current pace is 16:20-16:50 mile. My goal for the half is to do it in under 4 hours. A far cry from this time, but a start in the right direction. Thanks as always for the helpful tips and tricks!

At 3:30 you mention long runs should start at 9miles and build to 13 or 14miles. Is this meant to be km or is it ideal to run longer than the distance in training? I believe 8-16km max is mentioned later so I think its just switching systems!
@nickbell6435

For me it was just mileage, mileage, mileage. To get that mileage, I dropped my effort level. Lots of easy runs, 1 fast run a week. I built it up to the point 2 or 3 halves a month, with my weekly long run usually over HM distance. First half marathon in 2017 was 2h03m March 2020 1h37m

Hi guys I've finally broken my 1:45:00 half marathon. Im 53 years old. I started running just under a year ago. I've done a few, as in three now. My first one March this year was 1:48:50. My next one was 1:45:32 three weeks ago. I immediately booked another as i knew I could have paced it better. This weekend i ran one in 1:42:33. I'm absolutely buzzing now. You never stop learning how to pace these distances. Every course is different too. Love your videos, keep em coming.

I ran my first half marathon yesterday. I had a plan and then a time goal I wanted to push for. I ended up being over 17 minutes slower! The terrain I trained on was mostly up the roads and sidewalks in my neighborhood and the terrain in my race had sand, soft and uneven grass, things to hurdle and climb over, etc. I wish I knew the route I’d be racing in to try to train in some of those types of areas.

Exactly. I have done the distance many times this year the first time on January 4 this year. My best time was 2:11:20 (Garmin Time still no official-Covid) and slowest was 2:27:44. So the dreams of 8:30 miles are just that but very good coaching for younger runners who can perform at that level so all of us can convert upwards or downwards on the sliding ability scale. I totally feel the same way about finish lines not finish times. Cheers!

Crucially important content as per usual guys, great work. To all of our The Running Channel friends, please pay very careful attention to the entire video but especially the Recovery chapter beginning at 8:04. I made a lot of mistakes becoming familiar with the Half Marathon distance and had some triumphs too, but the biggest mistake I have made this year was cheating rest and recovery because I was loving being able to run long and dreaming of Marathons. That in connection with trying to mow a lawn after a 15.5 mile run is what yielded a Sesamoid fracture. Very wise content for those willing to accept great advice. Thanks always guys.

The half marathon is probably my favourite distance to race. I did my first one in 2014 in 1:49:29 (after targeting 1:50) and my PB is 1:32:27 in 2017. Training usually goes something like: tempo run + intervals + parkrun + long run for a total of 35-40 km per week. Right now though, 1:45 would actually be a more realistic target for me for my next race, whenever that is :)

Ran a 1:47 last year after getting back into running and only training for a few months. Planning to go for a sub 1:30 this October if the race still goes forward. Currently running 60-70 mpw with a 17-20 mile long run every Sunday. Generally most of those miles are zone 2 but sometimes I pick up the pace at the end and go zone 3 and 4 for the last few miles.

Interesting video,I just watched another one saying to only run upto a few miles short of half marathon but this one targeting this pace rather than just managing to finish a half is better for me i think.Couldn't do a mile 8 months ago and since july i have run 4 x half marathon distances for myself and was surprised to get under 1:52 at 1st attempt.1st 3 faded badly last 3 miles.last one yesterday under 1:48 and no fading so definately think 1:45 realistic target for me.Parkrun a few times is only time i have run with others around and it dropped my 5k time from high 24mins to low 22mins so hoping for same effect if i get round to entering a proper half.

I would love to know if some study has been done to get that "average breakpoint". If you were an average runner what would be your best achievable time for any particular race after say 1 year of training? That might be 25 mins for 5k, 50 for 10k, 1h40m for half and so on. My PBs are 18m30 (approx, can't remember as it was 26 years ago), 42 min for 10k and 1h37m for half. From my recollection I regularly beat about 20 to 25% of the field so that would put me about halfway between elite and average.

We like to think we use the imperial system but in reality it's a mix (and a mess) Running is in km untill a half or full marathon that's in miles Liquids are in litres, unless your in a pub, ordering beer or for milk Road signs are in miles mostly Weight is mostly in kg unless it's a human and then it's in stone and pounds Hight is in meters and cm unless your measuring a human then its in feet Yeh...... I can see how its confusing to others 😂

@@runningchannel First of all, WOW. I didn't expect you to reply this fast to my comment or even simply notice it but you did and I highly appreciate it! Well, for me, I personally like running on late afternoons though since I'm not that much of a morning person, but I've read in some articles that said running early in the morning is better since the surrounding is fresher, less cars less people, the air is pollution-free, and there's free vitamin D from the sun itself. Which is why I asked for opinions to know more about what other people think about this matter or if it's even a matter in the first place hehe but yeah, I am pretty much satisfied with your thoughts about it and again I really really appreciate your reply. Done my first ever half marathon today, 1:41:30 was my time. From 20 minutes onwards was largely at a up hill ascent so I’d imagine I can do much better at a flat track.

I ran my first half marathon last year with a time of 1hr 50mins 58 seconds. I was aiming for 2hrs, so was quite happy with the time I got but when I realised how close I was the 1hr 45mins, I started getting really disappointed as I could have pushed on a lot harder at the start. It didn’t help that I started between the 2hr pacer and 2hr 15min pacer, as it was quite a slow and sluggish start. I feel if I had started closer to the 1hr 45min pacer it may have given me the incentive to get that time

The Running Channel COVID-19 has kind of messed up all my race plans this year and with that my motivation to train depleted a lot. I went from running 40+ miles a week a couple weeks before lockdown to struggling to run 10 miles a week. I don’t think I could get anywhere near the times I did last year. I have always been race motivated and without races my running has been massively effected. Hopefully I get to run all the races I had planned for this year, next year but it will be like starting from scratch

This Sunday I ran half marathon less than 1:45(1:42 to be correct). 2 weeks before that the result was 1:47. The main thing, that changed in this 2 weeks - is my weight. Also do not forgot about "сarbohydrate loading" 2 days before start. Really important thing. And one more thing - you should eat something at least once while you run. Gel, or Coca-Cola - something that has a lot of calories.

Yes I do believe you can. In my home state of North Carolina we are home to Krispy Kreme doughnuts and they have a 5K/10k challenge where runners run half the distance, eat 6 doughnuts, and return to finish. I've never done it, but work with a man who has and he claims it sounds better than it feels.

I would love to see some cool training plans for HM sub 2/145 which aren't too involved. Not expecting it to be dead simple, but if you don't have access to a track, or have a Garmin a lot of the plans are impossible
@runningchannel
@runningchannel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! If you don't have access to a Garmin or a track, you could always use an app on your phone to measure out the distance, for example 1k and then just use a stopwatch on your phone to track your pace. Or phone running apps can track your distance and pace so you can just use your phone rather than a gps watch. Hope that helps!

Hi 😊 It totally depends on your level of training and fitness as to how long it will take you to reach that pace goal. If you're struggling to complete the sessions at that pace we'd suggest trying to dial it down and complete the set more comfortably over a couple of weeks before trying to do it faster again.
