I recently have had both knees replaced and cannot kneel on them. I ended up on the floor a few days ago, unable to get up. I was able to scoot myself backward to my bed and reach behind me to the bed frame side rails. From there, I pushed myself up a little at a time; with each push I brought my feet closer to my body and my rump a little higher against the side of the bed. Eventually I made it up high enough to scoot on to the bed. I challenge somebody to come up with a “no kneeling” method, because it ain’t easy!

I agree, I am only in my 50s but have bad knees. I have had a couple of falls whilst out with my dogs, one time I was lucky as someone helped me up but the other there was no one around and I had to get onto my knees to get up which was excrutiating. I now walk with a walking pole to help avoid having another fall! All the advice videos I have seen show kneeling to get up.

Doing this daily (getting down on the floor and up again) uses all the muscles and helps keep you more limber. It lowers your risk of early death.

This gives great helpful hints and if you are a caretaker as I was for my mother the first thing is to calm them down and give them moral support that they will get up. I came home to find my mother on the floor scared exhausted and frustrated- so all of you with foolish comments think twice - you may be elderly yourself

I'm 70 and live in a rural area. Last Winter I fell outside while shoveling snow and had to crawl across the yard, on my hands and knees in the snow, to get to a tree that I could use to stand up. It must have looked funny and I only wish I had a video of it.

I recently had a crash to the floor when carrying my robot cleaner. The first place I scooted was to the freezer for some ice for my knee! Then I scooted back to the couch and did basically what you demonstrated. Apart from a nasty bruise, I was ok. The vacuum cleaner, sadly, was not. It’s dead. Thank you for sharing this important information. I will pass on to my client who has MS and sometimes falls.

I trained to use horticulture as a therapy and rehab aid. It is especially good for post cardiac and stroke problems. It benefits the mind as well as the body. The therapist will tailor the tasks to the needs of the client. Starting small and gradually doing more demanding tasks and spending more time. Working outside or even in a greenhouse. In a group but not necessarily working as a group. (I am one of those who likes company but not crowds ). Growing plants has its own rewards of course.

EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION. I have fallen several times and managed to scoot myself to furniture where I could pull myself up. One observation. I am unable to put weight on my knees, its just too painful, but if I can get one foot on the floor I can push or hoist myself up. Last time I fell I managed to scoot to bedroom to get my cell phone and call for help from a neighbour, then to front door to unlock it. I am 84.

Sitting on the floor, at work - we had to watch vendors do their job - I used to just spring up - no problems, no issues - then somewhere around the age of 55, my spring wasn't so springy any more. The last few years at that job, it got harder and harder to get up. And some of the vendors I know were much older than me, and they still acted and moved like they were 20 ! I always found it so amazing, they could do that !

I too have had both knees replaced and cannot kneel. I fell several weeks ago in the bathroom. I was able to get myself into a seated position. From there, I scooted myself over to the basement steps. By sliding my feet and legs down the first few steps, I was able to stand up. I have railings and grab bars installed to facilitate getting my self easily up the stairs.

Excellent....now why in the world don’t we do that with friends and family....let’s go through the house to imagine what is the closest thing to get an assist, let’s talk about options with each other and for each other. Most people have heavy cushions on couch and chairs which are removable. Once slid off the couch, you're 5 inches "taller", and when you sit on the cushion, you can now sit on the couch frame.

My lower legs are weak so moving into the position of bent knee to raise up is almost impossible. I walk fine, I work in the yard, sit and get up to stand. But I cannot cross my legs when I'm seated, lower legs from knee down so weak. Upper body is fine. I fell in the yard a few weeks ago, so I crawled like a toddler across the yard, got to the chaise lounge. Its low so I reached across it and pulled myself on it, wasn't easy but I did it.

The best advice I heard here was “ calm down . You’re already on the floor , you cannot go any further.” I quickly found that when I told my mother “ok. No problem. You’re fine.let’s think of a way for you to get up and see if you can do it on your own.” She calmed down and felt empowered - as opposed to me buying into the panic and picking her up immediately. Now if she falls, she is much calmer about it, and immediately looks for a solution. No fear, and no panic.

Big red! Love hearing the you stayed calm, so your mom did. I have seen many secondary back injuries, and or falls with broken bones from Good Samaritans rushing in to help, then injuring the person further, or themselves. The Brits were right- stay calm and carry on!

I fell in my kitchen a couple of years ago. I army crawled into my living room and got my phone, called my daughter who lives about a mile from me. I said what are you doing, she said not much how about you? I said "I've fallen and i cant get up". After she laughed for a few seconds, she paused and said are you serious!? I said yes, she said we'll be right there! Her & her husband came over and rolled me onto a blanket and drug me through the house to the back door, and out onto my porch steps. As soon as I had my feet lower than my body, I stood right up. We have laughed about how funny I looked, but I am a lot more cautious now!

Also, my cell phones don't last more than a few years. If they are kept charged, they are programmed to call 911 even without service, so keep your old phones keep them charged and place in a lower kitchen cabinet and especially in a bathroom lower drawer or cabinet. Most injurious falls occur in the bathroom. You can always log roll to a cabinet or drawer.

I just slipped and fell on an icy spot in my driveway. I landed on my head first and then banged on my left shoulder. I panicked for a moment and then somehow managed to get up and return to my home. I was dizzy and had a throbbing headache. I then admitted myself to the emergency where they X-rayed to find 6 broken ribs. I was admitted to intensive care, where they monitored everything including my heart rate. Interestingly my heart rate was below 40. Doctors suggested a pacemaker and I agreed for the surgery.

That fall may have saved your life - as it showed you needed a pacemaker. I was getting my mail one night and thought to my self that I should be careful as the paved driveway looked a bit like it might have black ice on it. The next thing I new I was looking at my feet shoot past my head. I had groceries in both hands, so I couldn't even put my hands out to brace myself. I banged my head really hard on the driveway, and was aware of a possible concussion, but other than like you, having a headache, I had no ill effects. I did have to lay on the driveway and collect my wits and groceries. Thankfully people in my family have exceptionally hard and thick skulls.

I train my adult Dobermans to assist me in getting up. I get on the floor, call one over put my arms around their neck and under their ribcage and command them to "help me up". Perhaps it won't work for everybody, but for some it will. It would be good if people that might find this a useful technique would try it out prior to an actual fall. If they find that they can do it, they should rehearse it on occasion (when someone is nearby to help) so that they really have the technique down should they need it. It would be a great help to the elderly if their doctors could prescribe a few visits with a physical therapist who could try to find a technique that would work for them.

Brenda, I am so sorry you were down for 90 minutes plus. Other readers have posted ways they got up including a way I teach clients who have a stair case- that’s to scoot to the bottom step, then the second and sometimes the 3rd. Once your hips are above your feet a railing can be used to pull yourself up to standing. I’m sorry I don’t know your set up to offer suggestions in your home- perhaps you know a PT in your area who could offer ideas unique yo you and your home?

@@vitalityphysicaltherapynw7373. Your excellent vid is a start. People have hair raising stories. I must admit, I get mad….people go right back to what they were doing without making changes or even surveying what the heck happened, Survey the room, could a chair be flipped over to help the process of getting up. If not….buy one or modify. Dollar store pool mattresses. Inflate and hide under the couch or behind a screen. One on top of another will get you couch seat height. Slide cushion to the floor for a better grip using the furniture's wood frame. We're not doing enough. When I had hospice care for my parent…,I was shocked at how non existent the tools. Nurse and Aide were holding bedsheet with their fingers to move a patient. Handles. Have we heard of handles? Have a slick surface tarp with comfortable grips, This was hospice…..pathetic lack of equipment.

These were tiny houses built by the mill owners. As many as possible crammed into as small a space as possible. They had narroe steep staircases up the centre. They were dangerous.

I have bad knees (don't know wHat), 3 times I have found myself on the floor, had a chair roll out from under me once and the other 2 times my knees just gave out. Luckily I lived where there were stairs and I lied crawled to the stairs went to a sitting position and using the hand rails and stairs below me managed to stand. I have also used a chair to get up but I have no strength in my knees and using your example (before I saw your video) I managed to get up into the chair. The first time my knees gave out I ended up in the hospital and no problem could be found I was then transferred to a rehab facility for 5weeks for occupational and PT. FYI, if I sit down and have less than a 90° angle I have trouble getting up.

I also have a fractured hip, on my right, and a broken big toe on my right. I crawled to the stair handbar, AND it took me 15 minutes to get myself into an upright pisition... I'm terrified of going outside alone. I have fallen in the house once, but that was easy to get up from. I reached for a chair as was up in about 5 minutes . Thank you for your demonstration . 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Artchem1- i’m glad you were able to get up. Do you have neighbors within a reasonable distance? If you are nervous about going outside, place plastic whistles in strategic places:hanging from the door knob, in a flower pot, at the base of your mailbox- you get the idea. Talk to your neighbors that you might use a whistle to alert them if you need assistance. Hope this helps.

I don't have the arm strength to pull myself up, any other suggestions? This video would not help the elderly!

Bea Simpson i agree, to a degree. I am not elderly. I am 44 but I. Have MS, and i experience falling a lot. - - and i am in panic when somebody well meaning is trying to help me up. - ... i want to do it myself. - but my knees are replaced and it hurts when i am directly on them. - so this wont work for me either, - but the part with the chair however - there are other techniques to use, involving a chair, that most can use. - but each are different. - often people with a problem see a physiotherapist or other therapist to help with how to manage and they can show techniques that works. - but she does say a lot of good things, the part with the phone. - .... it is accurate, I don’t always have it with me. (But i am pleased that in the health app you can make it so it can call for help easily) - but there should be more videos like this that can be of use to those who are not in good health. But still want to try and manage on their own.

I keep a whistle on an elastic headband tied low on my rollator. Not everyone has energy to yell or scream if your down for hours but a whistle can be heard easier and it's less energy spent. (Unless you have a broken rib causing a collapsed lung then dont use it).

I have a similar problem with my knees only mine are waiting to be replaced. I only have 1/2 my kneecaps left and no cartilage left. One knee is reconstructed with 2 3 inch screws and a bone graft. The other knee has the meniscus torn on the inside and the outside and piece of the kneecap itself has broken off. NO kneeling, NO squating and stairs are murder. Any help for us?

This is all very good advice. But - she obviously is a heathy younger person who can do these maneuvers relatively easily. When you're 75 or 80 I guarantee it's a LOT harder! Another video I saw says use books or other solid objects to build up under your rump to get your backside higher to lift yourself up to a chair.

OK. I am going to deliberately fall several times tonight so I can practice falling without panicking. Hope I don't break a hip.

Oh and….never discuss these things without saying…..do not underestimate dehydration. Dehydration is synonymous. with….tailspin. We must be able to get up, do not wait. Get to work. Take pictures of each room in your house. What would I do? . What could I use? Learn what works before it happens….
