I keep a whistle on an elastic headband tied low on my rollator. Not everyone has energy to yell or scream if your down for hours but a whistle can be heard easier and it's less energy spent. (Unless you have a broken rib causing a collapsed lung then dont use it).

EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION. I have fallen several times and managed to scoot myself to furniture where I could pull myself up. One observation. I am unable to put weight on my knees, its just too painful, but if I can get one foot on the floor I can push or hoist myself up. Last time I fell I managed to scoot to bedroom to get my cell phone and call for help from a neighbour, then to front door to unlock it. I am 84.

Thank you. I slipped and fell on my cement garage floor and fell on my left knee. Thank God it was not my replaced knee. It did take several minutes but I finally got up off the floor. Thank you for your video and now I know how to get up off the floor. ❤ I am also 72 yrs. young.

I can not put pressure on my knees. Both knee caps were injured over the years. I could never get up if I have to put weight on my knees. A firm pillow under each knee would make it possible.

Two days after christmas I had a really bad backache I was trying too get out of bed but my feet kept sliding in front of me. I was holding on for dear life. My only recourse was to call an ambulance. Because I didn't have the strength to in me to keep from falling off the bed. Did I do the right thing?
@vitalityphysicaltherapynw73737 ай бұрын
@chipperniyalee. I am glad you were not injured. I hope the scare you had of “hanging on for dear life” will be the catalyst to get stronger so that your legs can and will hold you up when you are at the edge of the bed, or lift you from your favorite chair or the toilet or the car. Speak to your PCP about your decline in function and request referral to a physical therapist or if your means allow hire a trainer to work with you on strength. All the best in 2024. Colleen

I have a similar problem with my knees only mine are waiting to be replaced. I only have 1/2 my kneecaps left and no cartilage left. One knee is reconstructed with 2 3 inch screws and a bone graft. The other knee has the meniscus torn on the inside and the outside and piece of the kneecap itself has broken off. NO kneeling, NO squating and stairs are murder. Any help for us?

Sensible realistic video standing from cross legs is very risky for elderly people even assuming they could sit cross legged. Thanks

Between two knee replacements & both shoulders needing replacement, getting up is a challenge. There's a technique where you use an arm to orovide force to roll onto a foot & eventually stand from there. Its hard to describe but I've used it twice, once in snow, with no assistance.

This is very helpful. Backing up to chair is a great idea. But my knees are bad, I know I couldn’t kneel on them to push up. Thinking abt it, this is where I could back up until I find my phone! Thank you so much, I never considered that. ❤😊

The best advice I heard here was “ calm down . You’re already on the floor , you cannot go any further.” I quickly found that when I told my mother “ok. No problem. You’re fine.let’s think of a way for you to get up and see if you can do it on your own.” She calmed down and felt empowered - as opposed to me buying into the panic and picking her up immediately. Now if she falls, she is much calmer about it, and immediately looks for a solution. No fear, and no panic.

Big red! Love hearing the you stayed calm, so your mom did. I have seen many secondary back injuries, and or falls with broken bones from Good Samaritans rushing in to help, then injuring the person further, or themselves. The Brits were right- stay calm and carry on!

My 83 yr old father fell frequently but lacked the body strength to do these steps. A nurse recommended we call 911 and ask for lift assist. Our fire dept came several times to help, checked his vitals, and got him up and settled. Now my mom is doing PT to get stronger in case she falls again. It’s good for me to know the steps demonstrated in case I need to help her. Thank you.

I teach elder fitness. While most of this is good, remember, many older people have knee replacements. Most cannot kneel on that knee without a lot of pain. They will have to find a towel or some kind of cushion to kneel on, when they then try to get up.

Over weight is the problem, intermittent fasting, walking for 30 minutes, then increase it to 2 hours should help in bringing down the weight. With less body mass all problems will vanish in no time

Good advice. But I cannot kneel. My knees are damaged and arthritic and kneeling is so painful I cant even kneel on a bed or cushion for more than a few seconds. So when I fall, It's a big deal to find a way to get back up alone.
@vitalityphysicaltherapynw737310 ай бұрын
@Kathleen-Kelly-Simpson I have had many people relate the same struggle. Do you have a flight of stairs inside your home? I have taught people yo scoot yo the bottom step as I do on the floor, then move onto the first, second, third so that your feet are well below your knees and stand up with the use of the railing from the stairs. If you don’t have a flight of stairs we can be creative by using two thick cushions pulled from the couch, scooting then into a low foot rest, then onto the bare couch frame, then try standing from there. I hope this helps.
