my wife and I took courses every year at the big boat shows. Also boaters university has great courses on everything from planning, maintenance, and the most useful How to be rescued, how they search for you and what you can do to help them find you. Literally saved my wife's life!

Don't apologize for not being Nick. Even Nick gets tired of Nick. But here is a good suggestion for a Tech Tuesday, What sails should a cruising monohull or cat have in the sail locker for general cruising? How many sails do you really need (can you do it on just a main and jib)?

Surprised you didn’t mention navionics. I’ve loved it for the relief shading option. Great for finding wrecks if a scuba diver. But like you said. Some apps are better in certain parts of the world.

Good video as always, though as a very new sailor (partly inspired by this channel) it would have been nice to see a step-by-step example. Here's what we do to get from A to B, here are all the things we check or consider etc. starting from nothing and finishing with a planned route.

Another option to check the weather is windwuru, I use it more than windy to check surf spots because i found that, at least for Spain north shore, is works better for waves forecast than windy, that works better to check wind forecast.

Good tips Thanks. Ordering the Pacific Crossing book right now. Something I learned about tour guides (Lonely Planet, Rough Guides) is the digital version can be a real pain in the butt to use, but the book-book, you can highlight, turn over the corner of a page, skip ahead 4-6 pages knowing that's all the 4&5 star places and restaurants you're not interested in... Sure you can bookmark and highlight the digital copy what's a page number in Kindle? It's meaningless. (I once copy-photographed about 100 pages of the Rough Guide to Scotland and then flipped through the images on my iPad - it actually worked better than Kindle.) On the flip side guide books are heavy - but on a boat this isn't as much of an issue as it is when everything is on your back. Also thinking about East Africa in a year or two? Get an out of date Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. Dirt cheap. The prices for things are off, but only a bit, some places are closed, others just opened (and everyplace is never in the guides anyway) but the itineraries, best places to visit, etc are all there.

Enjoyed the video. The information gave me a some things to think about in my passage planning as well as reinforced the belief that I am covering essentially all the ings I need to be considering. Kepp the technical vidoes coming Treysa!

For example, the first was labeled "St. Martin's Best Anchorage." And think about all the videos you made sailing down the ICW - the places you stopped, the things you saw, the challenges you faced, etc. So, KZfaq. Oops - guess I should have waited to post until the very end... :)

Research and planning. Failing to plan is planning to fail. 1st you need to know what question to ask; then be able to find the reference material to find the answer. The less than romantic part of sailing.

I am a book and chart fellow. I do use internet but mostly for weather through PredictWind whom I find fantastic... their customer service is second to none. (I use Windy as well) Paper charts are perfect for planning but also as a back up... Nice video... good information and yes, you could do a series!

There is NO Internet based app, group, webpage, etc... that can replace the knowledge you can gain from a book. What if your boat's internet isn't working? What is the power is out in the area your in? What if satellites are down? Solar activity? Storms? Etc... Books are the best!

I, rather stupidly, assumed that being Australian you would. Clearly it is a rather large place, way bigger than us Brits can comprehend. The insight into your research was very interesting.

Great video. The only point I would make regards the BOM. You will get a much more accurate forecast by licking your finger, sticking it in the air and having a look outside.

Hi guys, I watch all your videos, but this one has brought up an issue that I think about all the time. You see on a lot of sailing channels about books that are invaluable or resources that you should have and read. I am dsylexic and I struggle with reading, I have to translate most of what I read so that it makes sense to me and therefore I struggle with technical or material that is in depth. When I do read items and manage to stay on course, I find that most of the effort was spent on translating and therefore I can Recber a word of what I read which is really frustrating. Do you see this as a problem for me in learning to sail or advanced sailing/navigating and getting resources that are helpful for me?

Being that you're in Vietnam, I thought you were doing this episode because Nick was camping at the doors of the Seawind factory.😂
