Wow now that's a fine finish there. Been doing a good bit of casting lately with silver, and now I think I'm gonna make some bronze and cast it into a small handheld mirror for my wife. I'm glad I came across this video, it's well made and to the point.

question for all you metal finishing pros. We'll be using the above process to mirror finish two brass coffee tables. After which we'll either lacquer or clearcoat the tops for protection. So the question is about Gord's polish. Do we need to immediately protect the surface after buffing, before it starts tarnishing, or does Gord's provide some seal that will let us take a break between buffing and lacquering? Thanks to all and thanks for a very informative video!

The Ancient Greeks and Romans used finely polished bronze as early mirrors. For obvious reasons, such pieces were highly valued.

A missed CRITICAL step to making a true mirror finish is to place it on a hard piece of super flat material. If you do not have a true flat surface you can use a very clear piece of glass table will work (pass a book under it, move it around, see if the text warps anywhere). Basically the way he has done this will leave wibbly results in it that will distort, so it cannot be used as a mirror. Also skip the 220 grit unless it's heavily deformed to begin with, and never EVER touch it with wire wool like he did that will gouge into the surface causing even more distortion. You don't use wire wool to wash your car. Don't use it on any surface above 800 grit. Also THOROUGHLY clean the surface between changes in grit, and go up to 3000 grit to make your life easier.

HVLP gunned high gloss paint, then do what this guy shows you but start at 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper, go up to 3000 grit, then use polish and wax on the gloss. You'll have a mirror finish that will be hard wearing. Or replace the bronze with nordic gold, a bronze alloy mix that doesn't corrode.

I can't find Alumicut in Australia! Can I use detergent and water in spray bottle? Or a better lube like INOX BRAND MX3? It's very clingy and doesn't dry out like any other lubricant? I did Aluminum joinery trade and glazing for over 20 years ago. INOX BRAND MX3 saved our triple chip tungsten aluminum dropsaw blades. Spray once. Cut aluminum up to 10 times. WD40? In comparison it's useless! Wax lubricant from Aluminum manufacturers? Good but messy and not as long lasting. As usual. Awesome job! 🙂👍👍👍

If you want a finish like that, you'll need to sand starting with low grit and work your way up just like in the video. Skipping grits will cause you nothing but pain when you begin polishing and notice faint scratch marks from the 200-400 grit sandpaper. I know from experience.

I am about to undertake a similar but smaller project. My bronze sheet is 34" x 3", and will be used as an interior floor transition strip positioned right before my apartment's main door. Why bronze? To match the doorknob and lockset. Fortunately it will not be subjected to the exterior environment since my apartment's door opens to an interior common hallway. Can I use TapMagic instead of Alumicut? I've already got a can. Can I use an orbital polisher for that step rather than a drill plus a foam finishing pad? I already have an orbital with its polishing pad. Which is better for sealing? Everbrite ProtectaClear ( www.amazon.com/dp/B0186N6ZVK ) or BlingMaster BlingBarrier? This is very important because my bronze strip might occasionally be walked on. For all the sanding steps I'm using a dremel and this: www.amazon.com/dp/B07PTBH6Q9 Thank you, it's a miracle that I found your video because it is exactly what I was looking for !!

Hi there. I have a copper cup. I don't know if it is related to your topic but I want to polish it. Can I use your method? Would it work for my copper cup? Your video shows to polish a bronze plate. So I think my copper cup is a bronze. Are copper and bronze the same thing? Would that work, or copper and bronze are different from eachother? I lack the information so I would be happy to be taught. In the abstract, I just wonder are copper and bronze the same thing. Because copper looks like bronze so I thought I could polish it the way you do it but you showed in your video to polish bronze. Thanks..

Hello, I'm having a horrible time with my contractor polishing my copper sheet, it has holograms everywhere? Would professional car polishers know how to fix it?

@@SkillsandTrade my copper has a very good mirror effect on it however it's full of holograms, do you suggest we start all the way from 400 grit? Or we can jump up higher? And it's 2 meter sheet, how can we end the buffing lines uniformly on a huge sheet like that?
@SkillsandTrade
@SkillsandTrade 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you can start higher than the 400 grit. I would just make sure take your time on the sanding. The car polishers would have a really good idea on how to do that. All it takes is the right polish for the buffing lines disappear that's why I prefer gords aluminum polish but I'm sure the car polishers will have that nice polish that would work well

Is there a reason you're starting so low in grit count rather than 600 or 800? 220 is extreme, that's for removing material not for polishing.
@jauniiwolf9349

From my understanding, it’s supposed to remove the excess corrosion from the bronze & even out the surface for a more even reflective surface.

What's the purpose of making many passes with increasing grit numbers? (Grit "size"? I'm new here.) Would it have been too harsh going in with something like a 3000 grit sandpaper right away? (Lol, or does it go the other direction? Did you use the most corse sandpaper first? The P220?)
@SkillsandTrade
@SkillsandTrade 5 жыл бұрын
Well you have to use the larger grits first to get off all the oxidation and scratches from the bronze. If you started with the 3000 grit you wouldn't even get any of the oxidation off at all and probably just waste the same paper.
@LBCAndrew
@LBCAndrew 4 жыл бұрын
each grit is for removing the scratches from the previous grit. If you jump too far between grits, you'll never get rid of the scratch marks OR you'll use way too much sandpaper to do so.
