Hand sanding bondo for the final preparation to spray primer on the car. Body Filler is a tricky thing to work with unless you know the right way to do it. Paint and body for automotive repairs takes practice and patients.

What grit sandpaper do I use to sand Bondo?
First step: Prep the Surface
Make sure to sand outside of the repair area as Bondo will need to be spread and applied wider than the damaged area. (36-grit to 220-grit should do the trick for body filler application).
Can You Sand Down Bondo?
Cut and sand
Once the Bondo cures, it's time to sand. Power sanders are OK to break the surface and knock down any high spots, but hand sanding with the body contour is the best way forward. Cut in with heavier grit sandpaper and work out to about 80 grit to leave a tooth for the following skim coats.
Does Body Filler Go Bad?
In a heated storage room, the polyester body filler will last several years. It's just the hardener that goes bad. Paste hardener should be kneaded in the tube to reach a smooth uniform consistency every time before it's used.
Is Bondo Toxic After It Dries?
Applying Body Filler / Bondo
As the filler dries, styrene is released to the air and you can breathe it. ... Exposure to styrene can cause respiratory irritation. It may also damage your liver and possibly cause cancer at very high levels of exposures - not usually found in autobody shops.

Pete next week I start with my High School body students. I don't even let them use a air tool until their metal work and filler work is done. All filler work is done by hand with various blocks, all initial sanding is done with 36 grit. Once everything is really close they move to 80. My preference is finish sand with 180. Less sand scratches plus it teaches them how to feather edge their filler and get a better feel to move to primer surfacer. Good video and couldn't agree more, hand sanding is the only way to go even after doing this almost as long as you. Oh, I will probably show this video to my students once they get their metal straightening done and we move into plastic filler in a couple of weeks.

Some 2K primers are thicker than others and wont spray out of a 1.8 tip well unless you reduce it like 4:1:1 instead of just 4 to 1 like it says. I like to go to at least 180 before spraying 2K. if there are still scratches then you just have to block sand and then apply more 2 K. But the primer is expensive so the less you have to apply the better

This intrigues me, I have a ex-marine buddy that owns a body shop and he is always telling me that when I am ready to learn body work he will show me the way. To him it is almost some sort of religion. Much like Pete, he is always telling me that quick is ok when you need it done but perfection is in the hands.

I tried doing a similar repair on a sand blasted hood that was also chemically dipped. I tried for a month with an air file. Before I figured out what you just explained. The hood was disconnected from the framework that also made it extra difficult. I reattached the hood to the framework then used hand blocks for another month to get it right. It was a. Learning experience. THANK YOU FOR ALL U DO. PETE.

Thank you my friend Pete! You are the informative and instructive guy! Gruff but honest! I'm a novice just getting back into paint and bodywork after four and a half decades. I learned in my early 20's in 1978 and now tackling a couple old steel behemoths in retirement (my '77 Merc Marquis Broughm coupe and '75 Chev Monte Carlo). I got all my old hand tools and a bunch of new ones too. Hell, my hard sanding block is older than my 45 year old daughter 😂 Looking forward to viewing many of your videos new and old! Stay well my friend Pete!

I can’t help myself as this is the 4th or 5th time I have watched the entire video. I feel I have learned something or reinforced what I felt I knew. As a repair tech and not a body tech, I still feel that I am learning. I was waiting for some guide coat action, as you use flat black and other use powder rubbed in. I bought a case or 12 flat black at $0.88 cents per can, but I do feel like a powder would show a little better and the best deal (Other Than Printer Toner) is made by “Mirka”. It is half the cost of 3M. I have also started a large bag of hard to medium hard sheet metal shipping foam. This was the topic of a video you made 8 years ago. Either way, you have shown me how many tools in my hand I can use to create a flat smooth show car finish. As you say, this is the “Build Coat” and not paint ready. I appreciate you enthusiastic approach to the final product. I will say that buying a .”Rust-Oleum” spray can holder for spraying any can product. Weather it is guide coat or painting an engine or transmission. I watch, I learn, I am better for your videos period! Thanks Pete! Here is a electronic “Shake a hand, make a friend” to you! Thanks Pete as I have no way to show my appreciation. Thanks!

The old guy who taught me bodywork like 40+ years ago always said, wipe it,file it,wipe it again, and he always started sanding or filing initially before the filler was rock hard because it cut and leveled a little faster and easier, and he always used a crosshatch pattern when filling and sanding, and we never used a DA on filler to do mudwork other than a big DA to cut the filler down. I've been a bodyman for many years, still will be one in the morning when i head to work in the morning, got maybe a couple more years before before i retire, then i can come home and not have to do it for anyone but myself on my own projects, that's gonna be a good day brother. Off my soapbox.

Been watching your stuff for a long time Pete. Great as always. You've never steered the viewers wrong. I might have a slightly different tool or technique when it comes to doing certain things here and there, but you're right on when it comes to explaining the procedures to people, especially newbies. Any detractors that might be out there will never be picking up a block sander in their lives anyway...they just expect the silver spoon in their mouths to pay for everything to be done for them (they'll find out soon enough that, that isn't how the world goes around). Keep up the great work Pete..you're appreciated! Best to Minnie and Sammie.

Thank you for sharing your useful knowledge. I have been into this trade for four years. Still can not get my filler work perfect. Sometimes i see ripples. Though i start with 80 grit with hand sanding, then smooth it to 180. Then use 2 k primer filler, sand it down, water based paint and lacquer to polish. Its a constant learning battle. Sometimes i get my filler work absolutely right and find it more frustrating when i get a run in my lacquer, or clear coat as you call in USA. but i am determined to get it right sooner rather than later. watching your videos definately help. Thank you so much for your hardwork.
