Simply!! 27.40 a day boggled my mind. It’s so easy to spend small amounts of money mindlessly never considering how it adds up. I’m keeping that amount in my head and will think about it every time I am browsing on Amazon. I do have a healthy savings fund but I’d like to grow it. With inflation creeping up more every month, both saving and reducing spending where we can has never been more important. It was good to see you Buns. 😚

I went back and reviewed my Amazon spending in the last month. Now I thought I had cut back a lot since Christmas and most of the things I bought there were things I needed. But I also bought a pair of pajama bottoms, 2 books I could easily have gotten from the library (rationalized because they were discounted) and a duster kit for 40 freaking dollars. I’ve lived without a duster kit my entire life but told myself I needed it. It all added up to $91. So I know I can do better and save more money.

We live in the greatest country in the history of the world (I’ve been told). I applaud you and your husband for your efforts to pay off your son’s medical bills. But…the fact that you have astronomical medical bills in the first place, and you have to work, between you, four jobs, says a lot about this country. Universal health care and decent wages would allow your family to live comfortably, with healthier, happier lives. I could go on, but I’ll leave it at that.

Yes We have Medicare that takes the weight off medical costs - covers public hospitals and Gp visits but I also have private insurance- so I still have to work to pay that. $70 AUD a fortnight. I so admire that people in the USA don’t give up. Try and push for Medicare over there ❤

Taking your own lunch to work and making your own coffee or taking a cold drink in a bottle will easily save half of the $27.40

My side hustle is a weekend receptionist job at a nursing home. It's 12 hour days on the weekends plus my regular job during the week. Hoping I can keep it up for awhile to meet some savings goals.

my side hustle is having yard sales. I get donations from friends and declutter throughout the cold months and then have a yard sale on every nice Saturday starting in the spring. that money really helps get me through the year. I'm a stay at home mom (family if 5) ☺ I have been doing this for the past 8 years.

I don't spend money everyday, not even close - I could not fatham spending $27 a day on anything! I pay my bills, grocery shop once, pick up pet food and get gas for my vehicle every 2 weeks. I go to and from work daily and pretty much stay home or help my elderly mother on the weekend - spending NO money. I know how easily money flows if you are not watching but ..... geez LOL

I used to spend money on coffee/tea and water every day. Many people do. I quit doing this in 2002. I pack a small thermos, snacks, lunch, refillable water bottle every day. Just in water and coffee alone, I’ve easily saved 25,000 dollars since then.

So true. I’m so glad you shared this because I think people underestimate how much they spend on little things every day and those things end up being often big things. I have a family member who buys drinks at the gas station several times a day. It could easily add up to $300 a month. They also struggle financially. It boggles my mind.

And what kills me is it is the SAME thing! Coffee is coffee, tea is tea, etc. If I'm paying to eat something out, you had better believe it is rare and only because I can't make that thing at home easily.

@@happycook6737 totally agree. Why pay 5.00 for one cup of tea? I buy a box of tea for 2.99. It’s the same thing. Also, expensive takeout coffee and tea really only became socially acceptable over the last 25 years or so. Nobody really cared that much in the 80’s and early 90’s. Sure there were takeout places then too but it’s just insanity now.

One of the ways I like to find that $27 is to do window shopping with Amazon. I look at fun stuff and maybe I put it in the cart and I just leave it there and don't buy it. Before you know it I forgot all about it and I don't end up spending the money at all.

Really enjoyed this video thank you Kate. My husband and I have worked towards becoming debt free and we did it! We even paid the house off! I am a frugal person to begin with and find it challenging to make life simple. With gas prices so high I learned that I have a 13 gal. gas tank and this helps me choose how many gallons to pump at the minimal and conserve it. Thank you for helping us.

If you buy a higher quality gas, such as Mobil, they have detergents in them that will give you more miles in your tank. Try it the next time you fill up.

A couple of suggestions when going to restaurants. Get tap water, not soda or booze. Bring Crystal Lite with you if you want a hit of flavor. Or do what my parents did. Add sweetener and squeeze a lemon section or two (both free) for instant lemonade. Either get a couple of appetizers, share something with your companion, or make sure you take half your dinner home for leftovers. And eat them! Have dessert and coffee at home.

Restaurants give too much food on the plate so we share a meal and ask for an extra plate. This cut our price by half. We eat out on special occasions as well ( expensive places last year). This year I will either make that same meal at home or they will have to choose a less expensive restaurant. My side hustle is baking ( brought in about $6000.00 last year) and that was only baking one day per week. I used the money for vacations, eating out, gifting and college spending (books and some spending $ while daughter was in college for her groceries and clothing)

Not simplified for me! I couldn't work with just 4 categories. The more detailed the better...now, my life simplified is a different story. Over the last couple of years I've been decluttering as I moved into a tiny house (just under 200 sq ft) and have limited space. It has been wonderful to let things go and lead a more simple life ❤️

I enjoy your channel and energy. As with others I'm a disabled retired person on a fixed income. yes I'm frugal, yes I save, I'm miles ahead from where I was a year ago. We each use what we learn and apply it as we can. I quilt, do crafts and I try to sell items so I can afford what I enjoy doing.

Melanie Nicholson, Just to be able to say you are so much further ahead than a year ago is a really big deal. After a second year it will really start to show what your carefulness has saved you. Being disabled makes it hard to add to your income. The SS 5.9% increase seemed so good until Medicare blew up any extra I still thought could help save for something. In my case I just spent it on groceries because of how significantly food increased due to supply chain issues. I hope you can keep on going with your great habits related to your money even if it is going to be more challenging. I love Kate and also “Under the Median” and “Frugal Money Saver” which are on YT as well. Stay determined!

Big Savings, and my side hustle of course is double overtime at a job I love. I recently posted that on Amy's channel, The Frugal Diaries Uploaded. I am a little over half way to funding my 6 month emergency fund! I have an RRSP, a TFSA, a LIRA, a work pension plan and I pay into CPP. This is all new territory for me. I knew i had an employer match plan for years, but i had to call and see how much we were each putting into it. It will be a year in August since I started on my saving journey. And I have you to thank in a very big way. Keep up the great content, and I will continue to go back and watch stuff I missed.

Simplify! I'm moving on Friday, a downsize to save on rent. My lease renewal was at a level I found intolerable. I figure it will save me around $350-$380 per month. I'm planning on retirement in arouond 3 years and am looking to save as much as possible. I will report on my progress after a few months in.

Educator side hustles: when I divorced I worried about keeping my house, so I talked to the director of the local arts center and started teaching piano lessons 2 nights a week. I have since cut back to 1 night since I have paid off some debt and have a good budget, but I picked up 3 advisor positions this year at my school that fit my abilities and interests. It helps in June when the stipends come out.

Retired people talk about being on a 'fixed' income as if it were a bad thing. I have found it to be a blessing. I know what is coming in each month. So I plan accordingly. Easy to simplify.

I round up when I spend money from the checking account. Been doing that for over 30 years. I'll transfer the difference to savings every 2 to 3 years, then begin again. Didn't realize it had a name, but it has been a "budget buffer"! 💙

I work from home full time as a psychotherapist and my side hustle is an extension of my practice counseling parents in the evenings 10 hours a week which brings in an extra 20k to 30k a year. I really enjoyed this video and will implement these strategies. Thank you.

Girl! You are so right. Last weekend I spent $4-0-0 in 24 hours in New Orleans with my girlfriends!! I couldn't even tell you what on! I only bought 1 thing that cost $10. The rest was just BS ing around. I bet at least $60-90 was tips for bartenders and street performers! But, I had $500 cash in my purse for a month + now , so I said ok ...that's my budget. No running my card a thousand times (that would stress me out to see that anyways). OH!! I just recalled, $130 was my part of the hotel & gas and I had leftover money so I took everyone to dinner when we got home ($118 w tip) call that $250, I can roughly account for the other $250, so not so bad. But I do think...man I could've had that in savings. I am bad about not letting go of my money , so it's probably best that I got am experience of spending it and getting memories with my friends. Its hard to have female friends in your 40's. I appreciate these ladies!

If you buy a lot of books (including cookbooks…yes, they’re still a thing), magazines, movies, music…STOP! Get these items out of your local library. If, after reading, watching, listening to said item, and deciding this is something you want in your personal collection, then buy the item. Try buying items, like books, at your local independent bookstore. Yes, it’s more than Amazon, but it’s the right thing to do. You’re investing in your neighborhood.

Hello, Thank you for your content. I love that you emphasize life balance and talk about giving. Now that I’m not a broke and hungry college student anymore, I’ve learned to tip especially when buying food or taking an Uber. It was really hard living paycheck to paycheck or being in debt. I always appreciated those people that were generous and tipped. I like to do the same when I can now that I have a job that pays a living wage.

I've learned to budget all my income generously for all contengencies. And then, each month I try to save as much on areas such as restaurants, electricity, food, clothing, gasoline, etc. Each month, any money left over will be applied to the next month, unexpected expenses, or transferred to saving account.

I love simple I do -Bills (includes mortgage etc) -expenses (food and petrol) -savings (which I then split out into categories in savings account) -miscellaneous. (Whatever is left after above for general spending. In an ideal world whatever is left from this will also go to savings on top of our set savings)

Simplify. I’m 68 and retired in 2020. Pandemic has delayed my planned for trip to England. Hoping to do that in 2023 ! I have pension and 401 K rolled into my IRA when I retired. I’m in paid for condo and have low mileage (I bought new in 2005) 2005 Toyota Highlander that has 120,000 miles and runs great as I do maintenance and don’t drive a lot. I lived very close to my work for last 20 yrs I worked. Making small consistent good choices does add up. As you show. I do treat myself being retired to eating out once a week. But lots of free stuff to do hiking in parks. Taking photos with phone camera. A retired neighbor who is a pro in digital editing of photos re Photoshop is teaching me skills twice a week. Free. He loves sharing his knowledge. I’m using ideas here to help me save to beef up travel funds and to not have to withdraw as much from my Ira for little stuff that comes up. Plus I have a credit card I am paying off. That’s been my Achilles heel. So not always great choices. Just found you a few months ago and love your channel. . Love your tips. Love your energy.

SIMPLIFY!!!!! I was trying to do too many things for side hustles and it got me overwhelmed. I'm settling on making crochet hats, which is a seasonal thing, parachute cord keychains and 100 envelope savings challenge boxes (and associated variations).

If giving is part of your desires and you are financially overly stressed, consider the gift of time and volunteering. Time stressed and financially stressed - consider taking a walk in the park, around the block, or down the street then picking up a little clean, safe litter. No you won't get credit and kudos as a "volunteer" but walking is a good stress reliever, can be done within a sporadic schedule, and costs no money if you repurpose a bread bag; one piece of litter is one less piece on the ground and on a path to a waterway.

Love this! I started making coffee at home for me and my husband and doing my own manicure and pedicure and wow... the amount of money we can save monthly is a lot. I know it sounds stupid but I no longer get my hair done as much and this was another savings. I started to look at cheaper healthy meals to make at home to save on groceries. We also stopped buying pre packaged foods / snacks and saw the grocery bills go down. For side hustle I do Dog walking. It brings in extra cash and I jut put in savings. I don’t even touch it.

Simplify! my side hustle is home health assessments, I am a nurse practitioner full time in a clinic, I paid off 50K on my school loan and credit cards last year, working on emergency fund and paying off the car next.

I work a full time job during the week 7-3 or 8-5. Me and my husband are trying to get out of debt this year. But I’ve saved a lot recently I would get Chick-fil-A everyday at work $15-20 cause I got it delivered I’m saving a lot

When $10,000 is broken down into $27.40 a day it makes it a much easier goal to reach! My side hustle is selling the crafts I enjoy making on Etsy and I also do online surveys and market research with a few companies who pay well.

Hello. I know this comment was about a year ago, but are you still doing online surveys? I can't find the good paying ones! I have done inbox dollars but they are only paying like $2 for 15 min of my time...not worth it.

@@Budgetingflamingo Hello! Yes I am. I live in Ireland so I'm not sure if the survey sites I use are available abroad but I find Red C Live, Acumen and World Opinions very good. I also use Clickworker which is available for everyone across the world and they offer tasks as well as surveys on there which are a nice change from doing surveys! The amount of surveys/tasks available depend on where you live. I hope this helps!

@@maureenmannion6748 Hello! I'm in Cork and I find the best survey site to be Acumen. You generally get every survey they invite you to. They give you a thank you bonus twice a year if you consistently do their surveys. Irish Opinions and Opinion World are good too. I've been using all three for several years and I have noticed there are not as many surveys now, probably because so many people are doing them, but they are still worth it

Just love this woman!! Yea i dont do sinking funds either. I always leave plenty of wiggle room in my main checking acct. U gave it a name, "buffer" and now im calling it that!😁 Im getting more aggressive towards saving for the future elder me and also my emergency funds. I want to see 10k in each! So i have been watching closely what i spend. Im also doing christmas giving early, getting it all out of the way by October. Only spending for like 4-5 ppl. Gonna make this a habit every yr. Great vid!!💖

You look very nice today Kate 🙂 anyway yep big savings- today I was in a meeting at work and I couldn’t believe how many people were talking about opening new cc due to the economy- also buying fancy things and complaining- we have unlimited overtime no one really does but the same ones are talking about being broke - I felt so alone 😂 side huddle overtime and selling part time on a selling app

Side Hustles/Earning Opportunities: I am physically Disabled and a Housewife but I still work in the home, making things by hand to sell online via Etsy and Marketplace and by taking surveys online. The best paid job I have is being a frugal, penny-pinching housewife. A penny saved is a penny earned and it's hard work! Xx

Saving 10,000 a year seems impossible for me, however I have a plan :-). I retired 10 months ago, and its been an adjustment. I have enough money to take care of monthly expenses. Added income has been working temporary assignments. I put 100 from paycheck into my checking account for gas for the car, and the remainder save or pay off debt. So far this year, I bumped up my emergency fund a little, and then funded my sinking fund for 2022. I like Kate's idea of having a budget buffer, may do that next. My dilemma is saving up for a newer car (mine turns 20 this year!) or paying down debt. Thinking of doing half saving and half pay down debt. Car still runs great. Car prices are outrageous hoping they will come down later this year.

Donna, just keep saving for the new car. I heard an idea of posting for used cars on the bulletin boards of senior centers, because many seniors would love to sell their car as they step into their new life and can no longer drive. It worked for someone I know. Often the cars truly are in great condition and have very few miles on them. Check it out. A good credit union will be happy to help you finance a used car as long as you have 3K or so to put down, if you are unable to pay cash in full.

Use it to pay your home as payment to principal, that was house is paid off and the biggest payment monthly is gone.

Ways to save on utilities. Swap out your bulbs for LED. Wear a sweater and use throw blankets around the house in cold weather. Check your windows and doors for drafts, and fix them. I’ve had top windows slide down, creating freezing rooms. Joanns often has outerwear fleece at 40% off. Get 1/3 yd (12”), cut the short ends about 2” in, every inch or so for fringe. They make excellent scarves. Also, get two 1-1/2 yd pieces that go together nicely (maybe a print and matching solid), sew together to create an inexpensive and warm throw blanket.

Simplify. I have to budget carefully.once our benefits are gone,we have to wait a month for the next benefits drop. We are on a budget plan for internet, electricity, and a rent subsidy.(not section 8) we do get EBT and I have medicaid.we try to keep expenses as low as possible.even food.
