How to save and transplant out the extra sprouts in your AeroGarden. When multiple seeds germinate in an AeroGarden sponge, you can easily remove the extras and transplant them into something else. In this video, I show how to safely extract the extra pepper sprouts (or any sprout) in your AeroGarden. I show all the tools you'll need. I hope these Aerogarden tricks, tips and hacks are helpful.

Thanks for the great advice Peter, I did herbs in my moisteneland system and have mutable sprouts, I was going to select the best sprout and snip the rest, I'm going to try your way to have more plants,THANKS PETER FOR THE INFO.

Great and simple method of crop multiplication Peter! Having used that particular style of basket before, one adjustment I have made is to cut the very center of the bottom cross free. Been caught away from access to hydro starts before, I find that when it is time to upsize to a larger single container, it is easier to pull the roots up thru if the center basket cross at the bottom is free. Great tutorial, I will need to try the scissors before I slice my fingers using a knife to open my Aerogarden pods. My results back up your findings. Went from 2 Aerogarden pods to 7 plants after re-planting. You must have BIG plans for the next stage of growing all those peppers until Spring planting?

I'll probably give a bunch of the extras away. Last year, I used a lot of them to fill out my drip system because I had a bunch that died. I think I had things too humid. This year, I'm getting much better results.

Referring to the ones placed in the BOTTLE, will they grow to maturity? 🌱 If so, how often do you change the water in the bottle? 💧

Smaller Kratky systems like the bottle I showed are difficult to maintain long term. Those are great to buy you some time, keep the plants going, until you can figure out something bigger. In something that size, you could grow it to the point of producing a few fruit. The challenge with Kratky method, and small containers, is maintaining the balance of nutrient feeding roots, and gas exchange/air roots above the nutrient level. As the nutrients draw down, the roots hanging above will convert to doing gas exchange. If you refill it too much, you can drown those roots and harm the plant. To be truly fill and forget with peppers, you need a large system 60-70 gallons. But there is another way. Using a float valve and controller bucket, connected between a reservoir and the growing container, you can maintain the nutrient level without risk of drowning the plant. It would start out as a regular Kratky system, but once the nutrients lowered down to the where the float valve kicks in, it'll keep that constant level. To answer your question about how often to refill, I would say once the level gets down half way, try to add a little every couple days, without filling up too much. Periodically dump out the nutrients, and add fresh nutrients back, up to the level they were before. I hope that helps. I know this was kind of a rambling answer.

Why don't you just use one seed instead? I find there's enough to do with my hydroponic system to add yet another extra thing to do. I sometimes start just enough seeds in my mirco green sprouter and then move them into a sponge. That works especially well with seeds like cilantro, peas and beans.

I start three seeds for redundancy. If it's a pain to transplant them out, you can just clip the extras. It's personal preference.
