How to Save Large Files in Photoshop

Creating images in Photoshop that are larger than 4GB and having a hard time saving them? This Photoshop Tutorial by Photillustrator will show you how Composite Photographer and Creative Portrait Photographer, Jason Ulsrud, save his super large file size images in Photoshop.
So, rather than destroying your ability to edit layers by flattening them, you can now work and save your images in their original format, always giving you the ability to make changes later if you want.

First off, thanks for the vid. If I am working on a large format project, saving as PSB file will be the appropriate way to send to the printer? Will they be able to work with that?

Hello, how is it possible, that you can save such a large .psd file as .pdf? My .psd file have just about 200 Mb and I doesn't have that option. Thank you for answer.

Hi Jason! One thing i have been doing in my latest composites is to convert the biggest "smart object" but instead of converting to "rasterize" i have been converting to "Linked file" so it saves it as a separate file that will update like any other "smart object" once changed. This makes working on each individual piece A LOT easier. For example, recently i made a composite that had a big head "Cartoonish style" : Containing : (the background as a linked file 500mb) (the body as a linked file 600mb ) and (the Head as a linked file 500mb) This made working on each piece a lot easier, each file was a lot smaller so very manageable. The original file with all the smart objects inside was over 3 gigs. Let me know what you think of "Linked Files"

How can I save a PSB into a PDF? I have tried and search for information but every time I try to save this file it says "the document is too large to save it as a PDF Presentation" Please Help!

hi, photoshop is increasing size of all my files to 2 gb. my file size is very small in actual its 1920x522 pixels with 150 DPI. And there are very few layers. It shouldn't be more that 300 MB. Please help. i am using photoshop latest version of 2021

I was aware of the .PSB file. Problem is, I launch everything from Lightroom and PSB doesn't "see" PSB files. So after saving it, they're easy to forget about or seems like I lost the file somewhere bc I don't seem them in LR.

You're right. Lightroom doesn't recognize the PSB file, so I always have to go to where I store my files and open it in PS. Once I get it where I want, I compress it down into one layer then save as a tiff. Now it shows up in LR and I can make any final adjustments I want before exporting it as a JPEG.

@@Photillustrator when i make all the layer compress into one single layer and save to tiff format... the sign is appear again..my photoshop is 64bit and my psb data is 10GB...may be is to big? please give me solution to save in tiff format 🙏

@@fullandstarving I'm not really sure. If your file is larger than 4GB after you compress, that may be the problem. From my experience, a tiff file can't be larger than 4GB.

For me, I output my pdb file as a JPEG sized to print and it works great. I do have a video on exporting digital files for large scale printing.

What if we want to reduce the file size from 4GB to something smaller that that let's say 20MB Is it possible?

The only way you'll be able to do that is to 1) rasterize all your layers and/or 2) flatten layers until you get down to your desired file size.

Hi, i jist want to ask. My file is saved as psb-large file format. Now I want to save it as png or jpeg. How can I do it? When i click save as, there are only 3 option that will show save as - psb, raw, and tiff. I don't how I'm going to save it?

Hi, I found a solution with that. I was using o lower version of photoshop which was I think 2016 version. You just have to install a newer version.

In Photoshop I go to "File" + "Export" and "Save for Web", which will allow you to save as png.

I am not sure but I've had that same experience. The nice thing, however, is you can now see your PSB files in Lightroom where you couldn't before. I personally save everything as a PSB vs. a tiff.
