Despite having a fast computer with the latest hardware, you may still find yourself waiting way too long for PSD and PSB files to open and save in Photoshop. In this video, I'll show you a checkbox hidden within Photoshop's preferences that could potentially change the way you work! I also want to give a shout out to a fellow photographer who told me about this feature; architectural photographer Mark Den Hartog. Thanks Mark!

Fascinating. I've been using PS for years and I had no idea about this feature. I'm not sure that disabling compression makes the most sense in my case. Probably will depend on which workflow I'm using for a given project. However, I consider this to be invaluable information to have. I'm really glad I stumbled across your video! Thanks for making it! Also, including the actual time tests of the open and save times in the video REALLY helped! Thank you again!

Thanks for watching! Yeah this is one of those obscure little checkboxes in the Photoshop preferences that can make a HUGE difference in your workflow. Most people don't know about it. I've been using Photoshop for over 20 years and I just learned about it 3 or 4 years ago. I suppose it's going to be different for everyone, but I personally shoot and composite 60+ megapixel images on a regular basis. My Photoshop files are always huge PSB files (not PSD) and using this uncompressed workflow dramatically speeds up my workflow when I'm working on a job. Once the job is completed, I always go back to my files and compress them to save on file size prior to archiving. It's a good habit to get into if you're regularly working on large files. Going even further, I've created my own action to turn compression on and off. So it's just a click of a button instead of jumping through the preferences. Cheers! 🍻

Awesome!!! So glad to hear that Henry! This workflow completely changed my life and I use it in all of my professional work. It has saved a bunch of time and allowed me to complete jobs much quicker. You can also create an action so you can easily turn on and off compression without having to go into Photoshop's preferences. Once I complete a project, I always go back and compress my master files before archiving. Feel free to share this video if you know anyone else that could benefit from this hidden gem 🍻

Yeah, this method can save you a ton of time. I use it in my daily workflow. The caveat is that the file size increases by a lot. So I use compression while I'm working on files. When I know that I'm completely done with everything, I'll turn compression back on and simply shrink the file size back down for archiving. It's the best way that I've found to work with large files in Photoshop. Glad to hear it helped you out! Cheers!

Excellent, very helpful. So this can speed things up while I'm working, but once I'm done should I just untick that box and save with compression? Or should I convert to another format, maybe TIFF? What's the best way to archive finished images?
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you'll want to disable compression while working on your files and then turn compression back on when you're completely finished working on them. While working in the uncompressed mode, I'd save your master file as a PSB because chances are, your file is going to be large. I personally never use TIFFs and wouldn't recommend using a TIFF format for anything because it's capped at a 4GB file size. PSBs can handle much much more. When you turn compression back on, I'd either keep your file saved as a PSB or you can change it to a PSD (if your file is small enough). Now that Lightroom Classic can read PSBs, I simply keep all of my master files saved as PSBs. Pro Tip: Instead of opening the Photoshop Preferences every single time you want to turn on and off compression, simply create a Photoshop action for each; compression on and compression off. Doing this also gives you the option to create a keyboard shortcut that allows you to quickly turn file compression on and off.

You got it! Thanks for watching! Glad to hear it didn't make your file size too big and that it also saved you time. It all depends on the resolution and complexity of your Photoshop file. I always use .PSBs because I work with really large files. Pro tip: If you make a Photoshop action to turn compression on and an action to turn compression off, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to to each action and save even more time. Cheers!

Thanks for the tip. It would be nice if Photoshop offered a clickable check mark to turn this on or off during a Save As execution.
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 4 жыл бұрын
Glad to help! Yes, it would be awesome if Photoshop had a clickable check box built into the Save As panel. Better yet, it would be great if Adobe could just add the speed of the "Disable Compression" checkbox to the regular compression. The fastest way that I've found to both Enable and Disable Compression, is to create an action in Photoshop. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to the action as well.

Hello Brian, really great video. Thanks for that. I have a question for you. Since yesterday I can only save file as psb or tiff file and no longer as psd. Do you know how to chance this? Thanks in advance for your swift reply. Léon
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! Glad this technique helped you out! Yes, the reason you wouldn't be able to save PSD files is because PSDs are limited to a file size of 2G. Anything over that would be saved as something else. It's important to know that TIFFs are limited to 4GB. So my recommendation is to always save in the PSB file format. These days, I only use PSBs, even after compressing files. There is no downside to saving your Photoshop files as PSBs, so I would just stick with that going forward.

Will this apply to saving images to an SD card with my Leica M240? If I turn the DNG Compression off, will the camera save files faster, and will these larger files open faster on Ps? I will investigate this, but I am also interested in your opinion. Thank you.
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 2 жыл бұрын
I don't shoot with Leica cameras, so I'm honestly not sure. There are a lot of variables like the read and write speed of the SD Cards you're using, whether you're using your cards that are UHS-1 or UHS-2, and how fast your camera writes data to name a few. So my best advice there is to do your own testing for your specific set up and see what happens. What I can tell you however, is that turning off compression while working in Photoshop dramatically increases speed when opening and saving files in Photoshop. It's a night and day difference. Cheers 🍻

I saved my file with and without compression, and they were the exact same size (3.229 Gig) regardless. Also, the save time was the same (7 minutes). Any ideas?
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what is going on there. When compression is turned off, your file size will definitely increase but also be much quicker to save and open files in Photoshop. Try disabling compression in your Photoshop preferences again, then close and reopen Photoshop. Go back to your preferences (Command + K) go to "file handing" and make sure that "disable compression" is in fact still checked. If it is, you should see a bigger file size when compressing your PSB file, but it should also be much faster. If it's not working and you're seeing no difference, it's quite possible that the version of Photoshop you're currently running may have a bug. I hate to say it, but every time there is a Creative Cloud update, I almost always have issues anymore. About a month ago, Adobe Premiere was absolutely useless. My solution ended up being learning how to use Apple's Final Cut Pro in order to complete projects that I needed to get done.

@@BrianRodgersJr It didn't say you had to restart before taking effect, but somehow I knew that may come in to play. After doing so a few times, the save time definitely improved, from about 7 minutes to 2-3 minutes. This was what I was looking for, so thank you very much for tipping us off on this. Oddly, the file size remained unchanged. I was expecting the 3.2 Gig file to go up to 10 Gig or more. Can figure that one out. Thanks for the tip and the personal response.
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 4 жыл бұрын
@@marcmarc1967 Cool, glad to hear that you got it working! I've never had to restart Photoshop for disabled compression to take effect, but I thought it might be worth a shot to see if that would fix your issue. Consider yourself lucky that the file size hasn't changed, my PSB files are always larger when I have compression disabled. I think the biggest file I've had so far has been just over 50GB in size! Which is insane! But, I do work with really large files sometimes. Anyway, thanks for the comments, and I'm glad to see that this tip is saving you some time. All the best! - Brian

it's a shame there is no option (checkbox) in the "Save As" Dialog box that let's you chose if you want compression or not for the current save-job. Ridiculous that one has to go into the settings to turn it back on when one is done with a file and simply wants to compress it :-/
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it would be a welcome update to have the compression option directly in the "save as" dialog box for sure! You know what would be even better though? If Adobe could save compressed files at the speed of uncompressed files! Pro Tip: Instead of going into the preferences every time you want to make this change, simply create an action for turning compression on and an action for turning compression off. Then assign a keyboard shortcut to that action. This will speed up the process. Cheers!

@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not a software engineer at Adobe, so I'm not entirely sure. I'm just hoping that someday in a future release of Photoshop we can have compression enabled to save on space, but also have the opening and saving speed that a non-compressed Photoshop file currently provides.

I redo your tutorial on Windows 10 bootcamp on my own iMac and realized that the speed even faster... I dunno if this was the fault of Adobe or because the Catalina version is shit...
@BrianRodgersJr
@BrianRodgersJr 4 жыл бұрын
@@giabaohoang373 Awesome, glad to hear that! It's possible that Photoshop on Mac OS Catalina could be slower than Windows, but I'm not sure because I'm not a windows user. However, this little trick will speed up your PSDs & PSBs regardless of what operation system you're using. I do agree, recent versions of Photoshop have been buggy and frustrating. Mac OS Catalina itself has also been a little frustrating as well unfortunately.
