Saw this video about 1.5 months ago and came back to say that this REALLY WORKED! IM so happy! I decided to try it on an orchid that only 2 had roots. I didn't see any new growth or change at all for 2 weeks. Nevertheless I decided to leave it in a new fresh cup of water and forget about it. Another 2 weeks later and I finally actually see really 2 tiny new green little roots peaking out of the base of the orchid!!! I was so shook and happy when I saw them! Im definitely going to try this technique with another orchid that has zero roots, yet is still growing a new leaf (showing that it really doesn't want to die off yet). It definitely pays off to be patient and not give up on your orchid even if it takes several weeks just to see some new root growth! I'm so happy to finally see my orchids coming back to life again 😭✨

I have such respect for those who care for plants. I especially enjoy the fact that a young man cares for orchids in a way that speaks to my heart. The only thing that could ever match the beauty of an orchid is the soul that nurtures it. You have a wonderful, calm demeanor, and I hope to see/hear more of your orchid tips here. I had fun removing my two rescues from their pots, cleaning out the old bark medium, and placing them both into one gorgeous crystal bowl for water-culture. They are sitting next to my two rescue Fiddle Leaf Figs, and the lot brings me joy. The larger orchid is in bloom, with another flower shoot forming. The other orchid has barely any roots, and is sending a flower spike into the ionosphere! I love learning about, testing, and observing nature, and there is nothing to match the hands-on experience.

Omg, I know this is old, but thank you! Please pray for my orchid, he has three clones and no roots! He was the champion, but due to my mistakes the roots rotted (too tighttly packed medium i think). Anyway, i hope you have a lovely day and all your orchids grow stronger ❤

When i saw this in February i was searching around in despair over the seeming loss of three of my Orchids; health issues had me away from home for almost a year. I used this seemingly 'too simple' method and Bingo! It worked !! Wish i could show photos of my 'chids' rejuvenations! Thank you so much.

I'm new to orchids and water culture. I have three in water culture that are doing great. Since then I've been rescuing some orchids from around my office that people don't know how to take care of (or think the plant is dead once the flowers fall off!). I'm really excited to know I'm doing things right and hope all the orchids I've rescued are able to live longer. I've watched a lot of KZfaq videos and yours is by far one of the best I've seen. I'm really hopeful my rescue orchids will do as well as my healthy ones!

Your method absolutely works. I have 8 orchids that looked like they were dying so I took them out of their medium, which was bark, and the roots were dead!! So I’ve been caring for them as you’ve suggested and I see new roots on all of them. Some still look very sad and their leaves are shriveled but I see new roots trying to sprout out, so I’m hopeful! Just wanted to let you know that I watched your video about 10 days ago. I have 2 mini phals that have no roots. I thought I would try what I learned from you and both of them now have a tiny little root starting. One thing I did do, I did have the bottom of the plant touching the water and I did change the water every day. I want to thank you for your help, I did not think it was possible, but, anything is possible.

I came to this channel, because I have a small phal (not a mini) that was a kiki. I separated it from its parent. It had nice roots, 4 leaves symmetrically growing 2 on each side (about 6 inches long each), and it was growing a new leaf at the time of separation. I potted it in fresh premium orchid medium from an orchid grower in California that was suitable for phals going into a 4-inch pot. I then went on vacation for 3 weeks. When I came home 2 weeks ago, three of my smaller orchids were suffering from shriveled and drooping leaves. All growth was stalled. Two have bounced back and are rooted in fresh orchid growing medium, but they had a couple viable roots and air roots. Only this one has shown no improvement in 2 weeks. It has one air root only, which is hanging on but has a crease in it near the base of the plant. Because it had absolutely no other roots, I am in a quandary what to do for it. Misting it with water and loosely potted in bark, I ordered Mega Thrive from the orchid grower in California, and that just came a couple days ago. I have sprayed the kiki with one treatment as a foliar booster to plain filtered water. I am encouraged by your method of saving phals with no roots, and I have this kiki in a champagne flute over water as you show, with three bamboo chopsticks to support it above the waterline, as the leaves are completely floppy. It's out of direct light, in bright indirect light (eastern facing window, since I don't have south facing). I am hopeful that I can keep it alive with foliar feeding/watering, and that your method will allow it to grow new roots. Thank you for this video, and I will update whatever the outcome.

After watching this I immediately put my ailing mini orchid in ICU, or in this case a glass suspended over water. The roots are next to nonexistent bc of one overzealous root trimming on my part but there are three strong flower stems which have been growing and I can even see buds forming, its just the leaves that are in bad shape (wrinkly and limp). I am really hoping this does the trick and she gets better! As a visual person this was very clear and helpful, thank you!

I have an orchid that wasgiven to me by my mother a few years back and left for vacation only to come back with it absolutely miserable (I did try to have it taken care of but it was neglected). Thanks so much for the info and your different steps to how your rooting system works! I have 2 Cattleas that have no roots. I got them as bag babies from Home Depot and the Roots had rotted completely and I've been trying different things to get them to start. I just placed a mini over water in a small round bud-vase I had, as a sort of hail-Mary pass after I discovered it’s roots were all but gone. I wasn’t sure if it would be effective, but you’ve definitely given me hope! Beautiful job! Thanks so much for sharing this.

Thank you for this video. I switched about 3 orchids last year to water but used a lot of water not just a little. They have survived in water for almost a year. I have gotten some mushy roots but cut them off. I will switch to less water as you have shown. I converted the rest of my orchids about 6 months ago and they are doing great too. Although no blooms due to no fertilizer.

I'm so glad that I found this video. I have an orchid that I received as a gift and tried to repot it but roots got root rot. So I just started this method today. Plus received one as a rescue that's dehydrated with one root. So I have them both sitting in the water now. I can't wait for results. Thanks again

Thank you so much for this video!! I have a phal orchid that is 5 years old that I got when my mom died. I had never had an orchid before so I was kind of excited. During this 5 years it has only grown one new leaf and never rebloomed. I had even repotted it in an orchid pot with orchid soil and fertilized. The leaves did stay green. I recently unpotted it from the all of that to discover it only has one questionable root. I found your video so I am hoping for the best! Thanks again!

Spectacular video. Starting off with showing your blooming orchid's recovery was such a powerful way to open the video. Seeing an orchid which once had no roots looking that good is an inspiration. It gives a lot of hope an optimism to someone with an orchid that isn't doing too hot. The way you show multiple examples is helpful. Especially how you highlight that some of yours have just a few roots while others started off with none at all. I will definitely be giving your technique a try. I got my first phalaenopsis a little over a year ago. I was thrilled when I was able to get it to rebloom. It was rootbound so i repotted just recently. Unfortunately i underestimated watering needs :/ the new media i used dried out MUCH quicker than the old media and my poor lovely orchid lost a leaf and almost all of its roots. It's a blessing in disguise though. As a result of this failure i get to learn about my orchid and learn from others! So excited for the journey of nursing my plant back to health. Thank you for your clear and straightforward video. Such a source of hope!

I found this video after my friend over watered my orchid and nearly killed it. I'm happy to say it's working! I thought it was a goner. Thanks for sharing this. I hope to put it back in its pot as soon as it has more healthy roots from its remaining one. It has a little baby one growing now. :)

Many people on KZfaq forget to mention that if you take a plant from its original mixture ( bark and sphagnum moss) and place them in a different mixture, the roots will probably die. Eventually, new roots will develop, if proper care is given. Could you make an update of the orchids that rescued in the water culture?

I tried this with my rootless orchid and it started to grow 2 tiny roots, which just shrivelled and died before they were even 1 cm long. I spent all last year trying to save it (following 3 rescue methods to date) and it is producing leaves but no roots. All advice gatefully received!

A FAN WORKS WONDERS for water culture. I had the same problem with white fuzzy mold when I first tried water culture but a fan solved that problem and so far so good.

Oh my goodness thank you!!! This is the info I’ve been searching for. I went to repot mine and it just broke off from the roots. My roots were doing bad anyway. I have two nice healthy leaves left suspended over water now!

this orchid was gifted to me about one year ago and everything was fine until it was repotted in what I believe was too big a vase which trapped way too much water, so I had to trim a lot of rotten roots which left me with three good roots. I'm trying this method right now and I can't wait to check back in in some weeks!!

I just rescued 3 Phalaenopsis that were drowned in too much water for a long time. I think I'm going to try your technique after I thoroughly clean and sanitize them. They have no roots at all after I trimmed them. They were all rotten. Temporary water culture method is probably the answer plus you can see what's going on. This is my first time at this. Thank you for sharing.

I’m so dumb and I feel terrible. I had an orchid for over 4 year but she was never repotted and she got little flys. I thought I would try to repot her and get rid of the flys but stupid me didn’t research the actual life of the plant and why it grows as it does. So I got another pot just a bit bigger, new bark potting mix like she was in. I rinsed her, cleared dead roots and repotted. Then a month later 2 of her 4 leaves went yellow and dropped. No new growth to be seen. I started reading. Really reading. What I failed to realize when I repotted her was, I stuck her aerial roots INTO the new soil! I never realized I did it. So, all but one greenish root remains. Her remaining 2 leaves still look ok. I’m grateful I found your video. I’ve cleared the dead roots and have her in my coffee press, the best glass container I have to accommodate her. Wish us luck. Ty.

This is very helpful. I’m trying to rescue my daughter-in-laws orchid. It was accidentally left outside and got sunburned pretty bad. There is one good root left and I wasn’t sure what to do with water culture so this was exactly what I was looking for.

Love this video I tried to maintain my orchid safe but it has been almost a mission impossible, I don't have the appropriate place to put it and accidentally it fell off and no idea how to re pot because it lost its roots. Unfortunately, I have had many orchids with no roots. Water evaporates very quickly so if you have several to deal with (I have 60), letting the entire root area sit in damp moss works great and I would never use tap water for any orchid ever. I make a mixture of distilled water, kelp, and CalMag instead of just plain water. Calcium and the enzymes in kelp are very effective for root growth. I use different proportions and add orchid fertilizer for regular watering.

I have a phalaenopsis that went into shock from repotting and lost all its roots. I’m trying your method suspending the base right above the water. In less than two weeks it has three root bumps that have appeared. Fingers crossed! Thanks for the tip. It’s working.

I'm so glad I found this video !! I accidentally overwatered one of my three orchids - its leaves were wilting from rotting roots which I accidentally mistook for underwatering since the outer portions of the roots still appeared healthy - so I'm going to try this method out and see if I can save it. Its roots are pretty messed up so I'm hoping it'll grow new roots, especially since I've already cut two thirds of them out and the remaining roots are very yellow. I'm not going down without a fight LOL

my rescue orchid is down to one leaf now. It has 2 new leaves growing but they are still tiny and take sooo long to grow compared to my healthy plants. Its been in this state for well over a month or 2 with no roots. It just doesnt want to grow roots at all. It chose to inves its energy into the leaves rather than growing a single tiny root. Its pretty dehydrated and I do everything I can to hydrate it. I keep it in sphagnum moss and keep it moist. I also wipe the leaf with a damp cloth just in case it can absorb atleast a tiny bit of water through the leaf. Atleast Im glad the plant is a strong fighter and it doesnt wanna give up at all

They’re caused by overwatering, but don’t take my word because I’m relatively new to orchids heh. But since this video is 2 years old, you’ve probably learned that by now haha

Love this video. Got my phalaenopsis plant as a gift. It was in terrible condition to begin with. Potted it, now flowers gone, no growth. So I unpotted it. Now it worst Than before I got it. I think I over watered it, it has rotten roots. Cut all them off only 2 roots left with a loose leaf.😞. Now I taking this suggestion through your video. hopefully it will bounce back..

my orchid came with a sponge around the roots and eventually the roots all rotted without me realizing and the leaves fell off. There's one tiny one left and I'm really hoping this method helps it pull through 🤞
