Hi everyone, Dhruv here! I just wanted to say first of all a big, massive, huge, thank you to Chris. I got a sneak peak behind the curtain into how much time, effort, quality and attention to detail goes behind Chris' talks and video editing and we at Plant-Based Cambridge are so grateful that our merry band of activists' society event could get such a massive platform. Despite family commitments and TEDx Longevity, Chris still made time for this, and was gracious about my nitpicking and fact checking

Hey Chris, I'm a 30-year-old Aussie guy. I'm generally healthy and hitting the gym three times a week, I've lost 15 kilograms on a high animal protein and saturated fat diet. However, my GP recently gave me a wake-up call by revealing that I have the highest LDL and overall cholesterol levels he's seen in someone my age range (likely genetic). That's why I turned to the Cholesterol subreddit, where someone recommended your videos. I've spent the last week binge-watching them. Your videos have been eye-opening, and I've decided to make significant changes in my life. I appreciate how you break down academic studies, your understanding of nutritional science history, as well as the politics of nutrition, which adds credibility to your content. I'm scheduled to see a dietitian this week, and I'll be discussing a lot of the topics you've covered. Thanks for your informative and entertaining videos. Cheers!

Good afternoon and welcome to the closing of another great day on this Amazing Planet we are so lucky to call Home 😊. My Lovely Mum told me when I was about 15,(64 years ago), "watch out in life Dave,success leaves clues". I'm also lucky to be living in Australia (Jervis Bay NSW). My Lovely wife and I (81 and 79) have been NO meat, fish,dairy or eggs for the last 30 years we are healthy, fit,active,happy and content.Full of gratitude,empathy and compassion no health issues or medications just a B12 supplement. Both as strong as an Ox with amazing endurance and with very sharp critical thinking skills that saved us from some deadly awful shit over the last few years. Going plant based is like any diet choice,you have to pay attention to the necessary nutrients and be aware there may be a short detoxification process during the first few weeks,that's a good thing so don't be surprised. I just completed my 79th trip around the sun and decided to celebrate with a backwards somersault off Moona Moona creek bridge at Huskisson ,it's on KZfaq and only 2minutes but you might get a laugh 😂 Best wishes, @davidslater9297

Not sure if I understand well what Dr Yeo means but coming from a poor country and now living in the US, I know-because I managed the budget for my family as a single parent-that eating a plant based diet is far less expensive and still nutritious and safe if you combine the right foods which we did, not because of knowledge then, but by tradition. Vegetarianism is not for the priviledged. I think the problem is that priviledged individuals seem to think you need to buy at expensive places. Not so. There are very affordable stores where you can buy all you need and even organic foods if you choose to do it. Another issue with his statement is that science has not proved that even a small amount of animal protein produced negative effects (agree it’s not going to kill you if minimal) but Dr. Greger has gathered information on how fast the negative effects of animal products affect our body. That said, I follow a diet with minimal animal products and very low salt, I am 75 yo and on no medications so far. Hopeful to remain like this

Yeah when I think of poor, oppressed, and underprivileged groups throughout history, they survived on things like cabbage, potatoes, rice, bread, beans. Only in the US are chicken nuggets and ground beef the affordable/accessible options, thanks to subsidies and barely meeting our meager animal welfare laws.
@virajbhalani8389
@virajbhalani8389 14 күн бұрын
I would go as far as saying the carnivore diet is the diet of privilege. To “do well” you MUST consume grass fed beef and butter. Last time I checked those are the most expensive forms of food at the grocery store despite subsidies. Tofu, beans, lentils, whole grains are the cheapest foods on the planet. We live in a country that can very easily make fruits and vegetables much cheaper, if they just changed the amounts of subsidies to animal agriculture and have some of that to plants-for-humans farmers

You are clearly on their list as the trolls came out early. I would take this as a compliment. The truth will eventually prevail. And the truth will set us free. The idea that veganism is for the privileged few is at best a distraction and more likely insidious. If you are attending a Cambridge University talk then you have that choice. If you are 99% of people living in the UK you have that choice. The type of people who make that argument are often the same who spout the "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" trope. Yes we need to try to reform systems and society at large but that doesn't mean that your personal choices don't matter, take responsibility for them! Rant aside great video and as always the tone was spot on as well as the content. I'm always amazed at the environmental benefits just moving away from beef would bring.

I think that people that make this argument are comparing convenience items that are heavily processed, for example plant-based alternatives to cheeses and meats, which are more expensive than the animal products that inspired them. Eating vegan is cheap if you have the time and energy to cook from whole ingredients.

According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, animal agriculture is responsible for around 14.5% to 21% of global GHG emissions. We can't get to net zero emissions without addressing that, and the easiest way to address it is veganism.

I'm a dairy farmer in Germany. I love to watch your videos, because you put much effort into making them and getting the facts straight. I can't get rid of my cows that quickly, because selling milk pays a lot better than selling plants like oats and pulses. Not only a few percent better, but you'd earn manifold the amount with dairy on the same farm area (which is hard to expand). I'll try to make my cows produce milk as efficiently as possible by giving them a long life and long lactation periods with as few times of giving birth as possible. I'm down to about 700 g of CO2 per litre of milk produced. I'd like to turn the farm into a plant focused business in the long run. But changing the business model takes time (for paying off the debt I've inherited with the farm). There's not many ways to get that amount of money. I'll try to add solar energy production to substitute some cows and to lower the number of cows on my farm gradually over the years. I think milk can be a good addition to the diet of children, the elderly or physically very active people, but I the data speaking for a plant based diet is very convincing.

I really enjoyed learning more about this issue with facts , on a personal note years ago I started on a journey of diet and health through many lectures from Michio kushi and the macrobiotic community. They were so ahead of their times. I rarely heard the environment discussed but they surely promoted whole grain plant based diet with a little fish. I was just 17 and took to it well. Now in my 50s still at it. Eating much less if any fish due to the pollution but still chomping away on grains and greens lots of beans. Anecdotally speaking. It has worked. I encourage everyone to study health and learn from folks like this you tube author It may help save your life and it will for surely help the planet

Please. Animal or not, it's energy overconsumption that hurts us so, and these foods directly induce it. One can be lean on anything from carnivore to vegan and everything in between and be significantly healthier than the average person over consuming junk food of any kind, vegan Oreos or McDonald's. I still believe in animal products because it's much easier to get nutrient deficient without any. I think we just have too many bloody humans to sustain, no matter what we feed them all.

The cost thing always makes me chuckle. The poorest in the world eat the least meat. Sorghum is so cheap it's used for building material. Also the RCT vs epi data is so frustrating. People seem to want a simple pyramid of evidence. They can't think outside that. It gets even worse with basic physics or flud mechanics. Respirators work because of our understanding of fundamental physics (fluid dynamics, electro static forces etc.) they don't need RCT's to prove they work. Yet during the pandemic the CDC went full retard on the whole situation.

I like you Chris, a lot (not that it should matter!). I love your vids, your enthusiasm, humour and clear interest in the subjects you make vids about. I agree with you on so many things but the thing I find frustrating the most is that I either personally know some of what's being said is wrong (women's health risk by using HRT a huge one - propagated by Dr Greger and his team and highlighted on your channel) or others do. That you base your videos and work around facts and science. I have friends who are climate scientists, they've panned Hannah Ritchie's book. They don't even know each other and yet they agree that she gets facts wrong and has a naive optimism in the face of a history that shows we can't afford to be so. Lastly, and not at all least, many of us did know the plan and playbook re climate change, diet wars etc and saw all of this coming. Most specifically at the time the US declared 'war' on the deterioration of the ozone layer, climate disaster it was obvious what was about to happen. We were screaming that there's no way these big businesses will do anything other than what they did. But you've declared many times over that nobody knew this would happen. How is it possible that for someone as well read and smart as you are could you possibly ignore the history of companies side-stepping positive interventions for all in favour of a campaigns of disinformation, cover-ups and in some cases murder? (happy to list off examples) It's beyond frustrating to see you buy into the idea that facts will win out, when they more often than not, don't. Do I think that means we need to give up? NO! It's one of the reasons I stick around and watch your channel. We still must persevere but with the blinders off. I hope you understand I'm not one of those trolls you refer to and unfortunately experience far too often. Also, I hope you're well. In case anyone is wondering about other's thoughts on Ritchie's book are I found a couple with quotes like 'this book is oversimplified at best and dangerous at worst.', 'Hannah found herself contorting and making use of accounting tricks and statistical sleight of hand.', 'Alternative title: How to Mislead with Data.'. The reviews highlight what friends had mentioned to me like a twisting or misrepresentation of facts set alongside ignorance: www.goodreads.com/book/show/145624737-not-the-end-of-the-world#CommunityReviews Still, cows, don't eat 'em. If for no other reason than your health, but the planet will thank you.

When you think about it, it doesn’t actually make sense to not be vegan because certain vegans express views in a way that grinds your gears (I disagree with some vegans too). Many omnivores express obnoxious views about food but I didn’t become vegan because of what they said but because it makes sense for the mistreated animals, the environment and potentially myself.

@@robsengahay5614 That's not what I am trying to say. The way PlantChompers communicates is convincing, and nuanced, without passing moral judgements on people. He seems very committed to rational science. That's very powerful. If you think about it, an idea like veganism is not natural to most societies; you need to do some convincing. If the plant-based folks' PR is full of condescending vegans purporting themselves, somehow, as morally superior without understanding other people's contexts without any nuances, then there will naturally be a lot of resistance and obnoxious people fighting back.
@robsengahay5614

@@franciscogonzalezramirez5033 I understand your point but you should also realise that almost all vegans were once not vegan and we carry the guilt of not acting sooner in accordance with our own moral framework. It isn’t that vegans are proclaiming that they are morally superior it is that they are now acting more closely in alignment with those moral values than they were before. It is always tricky to find a good way to show people that they are complicit in a bad thing. This channel doesn’t advocate veganism but focuses mainly on human health which can be achieved by a reduction in animal products which is fine but also less likely to be confrontational compared with someone advocating for the rights of animals.

It indeed is a privilieg for some people! You have to ensure that you'll get all the nutrients which you only get by animal products. Creatine, Taurin, carnitin, b 12 AND all the other meat based active compounds which most probably haven't been discoverd yet! Yes the mentioned substances can be synthesized to some extend by the human body. But this possibility is individually different. This is the main reason why 100% plant based nutrition is not for everyone and someone has to be depentend on supplements. Check out Niko Rittenau a young european vegan influencer and scientist.

Such a fantastic episode again!!!! The clip with Gilese Yeo... Oh, wow, he contradicts himself in every sentence. I don't know any plant based eater who thinks eating one bit of eggwhite will 'slowly kill you'. And what an arrogance to think it's not important for very hardworking, low-income people to live a healthy life with good nutrition. And usually the people that are pointing out how "not everyone on the plant has the priviledge to eat plant based", they themselves HAVE the priviledge, yet they are not eating plant based. . Off topic: I am now doing a fitness program (lead by the vegan athlete @Natalie Matthews (@FitVeganChef). She is 11 year vegan, and she is a pro bodybuilder. Regarding milk and dairy which was raised in one of the question at the end as "necessary" or "healthy" 70% of the world's population is lactose intolerant that should make clear that dairy is not necessary for human health, milk is for childeren and cow's milk is ...well for cows. the idea that a "balanced diet" should contain animal products is an industry talking point you can get all necessary and healthy nutrients from a whole food plant based diet and dairy or meat consumption is not necessary. As Chris pointed out plant alternatives are not health foods but they are far better than real meat , they dont give you cancer or type 2 diabetes which meat does. Casting doubt on plant based alternatives has been a successful strategy even at this talk someone raised it in the question at the end. Another strategy is to portray veganism as elitist or as a privilege like Dr. Yeo said. The issue is that vegan food is being sold as a fashion trend in overpriced supermarkets and restaurants. People in poorer developing countries eat a mostly plant based diet already unlike us Westerners, in reality we can learn from them and ditch the junk big macs etc Dr. Yeo seems to know that , it's sad he misrepresents veganism. Eating some "a little bit of egg white" of course won't kil you and no reasonable person will claim that, however if you believe in animal welfare it's simply unethical because you are paying for animal abuse. It was a great talk Chris I enjoyed it however the global context was missing especially the health effect on a global or population scale the change to a plant based diet would have a huge effect on healthcare systems, medical care and population health.
