I'm very thankful for your computer scouting tutorials over the years, back to when you showed how to overlay a pdf map into a KML for a Garmin, which truly was a DIY innovation. Even now with resources like OnX available, I appreciate your work on this channel.

Your comment of at least bring hip boots is so true. I’ve wasted countless scouting trips of trying to follow the small trails from woods out to the islands. I also have my own color management system. It’s so much easier to look back at a glance and see what you have found. Great vid, thanks for sharing.

I'm currently working an area & I will be done in a week. These r close range spots on slivers surrounded by river backwater. All prepping is 4 saddle hunting & is way back. Need 2 finish this ASAP since turkey scouting starts soon. Quite a bit like island hopping in marshes but much darker. Those r a lot of good tips. I am going in from 1 access & if I choose 2 take a deer it most likely will leave via a kayak 2 load @ another destination. Sometimes u need all the info 2 go the extra mile 2 see things most won't see or no exists. Great content as usual.

On X is a good tool for when you get turned around. use a compass to point north then turn phone so north lines up. I have turned 180 deg. and found my way out. also it helps you find a down deer by adding way point on tracking.

I just finished changing colors of some of my waypoints for easier recognition thanks for the tip, no more sea of red. Would you please make a video about scouting and hunting the driftless areas of WI, IA and IL showing terrain funnels, bedding and feeding areas.

Same here. I'm in SC. When you look at ONX or Hunstand for public land, all you see is trees, even in the swamp areas of Sumter National Forest between Greenville and Columbia. I think even the small ponds have permanent trees and undergrowth in them... You can't see any "game trails" from the satellite views. Even the clear cut areas seem to grow back fully within 4 years.... The hiking trails get overgrown within 2-3 years. I don't think they are hiked except for hunters occasionally. Bring your machete, string trimmer and chain saw!

Thanks Garrett very informative! In indiana we have medium woods surrounded by ag. That scenario feels like there is really no place off limits to anyone and you will find hunter sign right off the road and trail all the way to the furthest points (and everywhere between). Feels like shortly after season starts a bunch of deer get pushed out to ag field tree lines which for public land hunters usually off limits, given the world we live in these days gaining permission is all the more difficult. Would love to hear your thoughts and any changes in process for that type of scenario. Love your stuff and enjoyed the public land challenge contribution a couple years ago and look forward to learning more from you and the other gents from that group. Thanks for all you do!
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like in that scenario, I'd want to look for potentially overlooked spots if they exist or places where bedded deer could watch or smell other hunters accessing. It could be a small ditch, fencerow or brushpile within sight of a parking lot. But if that's not happening, I'd probably scout around on different public until I could find something like that. If corn is up they could bed out there too until after dark which is tough. Continuing to knock on doors even if it seems futile might not be the worst idea either if it could give you more options.

Great breakdown of your scouting process! Do you generally take a late summer trip back to a spot like this for a speed scout to check for fresh sign or do you just trust what you saw during winter scouting and scout for fresh sign when you go in for the first hunt?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If there are low impact areas like those logging roads that are close to bedding I'll take a walk. Otherwise I'll leave those remote, sensitive spots until the season.
@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 4 жыл бұрын
Garrett great video...do a lot of the similar things but really don't do the color coding which I will begin to do... really like that. How much do u use trail cams ? If u do, what main factor of an area determines if u will go back and place a trail cam? If u don't mind me asking how often will u hunt an general area before moving on?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 4 жыл бұрын
I try to use trail cams more and more, primarily to get an idea of what's in the area. I'm usually hunting remote enough that I dont need them to confirm daytime movement, and like to keep trail cams away from hunting spots, unless it's a cell cam or a cam I'm letting soak the whole year. I'll usually hunt a spot once and move on, unless it's during the rut. The next hunt might be shifted 40 yards over based on movement, or it might be hundreds of yards away on another island.

Dang, looked on the DNR website and that fish lake area has more access & parking areas than an international airport and I suspect just as many people seeing it's around an hours drive from the twin cities.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 4 жыл бұрын
I often hunt even closer the twin cities in areas with just as many if not more lots. Bowhunting pressure really isn't that bad, especially if you arent afraid to get your boots wet. I'd imagine this place is similar with low bowhunting pressure and pounded during gun, with the majority of guys sticking relatively close to easily accessible areas.

I tried a pair of Mavens at the Iowa Deer Classic. Are you a fan? I've been thinking about trying to set something up for a side by side with Vortex. They seemed like they had incredible glass and would love to hear your opinion.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 4 жыл бұрын
I just received some B2 7x45 about a week ago and the first impressions are very good. Low light is a little better than my Styrka 8x42. Not sure if that's at all due to glass or simply exit pupil. The C-series of course will be of a lower quality and priced accordingly but also in the decent bang-for-your-buck category depending on what you're looking for. I haven't had a chance to compare side by side with Vortex.

Is their ever an area you’re scouting that you would decide to skip the boots on the ground part, going just off onX? Or do you try to walk the land even though you’re doubtful via the online scouting portion of your scout?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman Жыл бұрын
I would always prefer to walk the land unless I can't due to time or physical distance. Like if it's a 10 hour drive for instance, a separate scouting trip might not always be feasible. But you can still do effective spot checking once you arrive. Many times spots that look good on a map could have a lot of hunting pressure.
