Inkjet printers only have some small items for gold recovery but are very easy to find and in a short time you can build a good collection of gold plated bits.

Very helpful video. That tip about the mercury was huge, I'd of never known that. I grabbed a bunch of junk printers from my job and started tearing them down today. Super cathartic and this video will help me be much more efficient.

I've been scrapping for about 29 years, and I was just like Ben. I liked alot of the window types of chips, have got a good collection of every type I ran across. Collected oodles of stuff from everything. All the stuff that had gold on it, too. I've paid rent of 900.00 a month for years with the money I got from processing the gold and from recycling everything else. I'm from Silicon Valley in California. I'm in my early 60's, now and have retired from scrapping, but I still do it once in a while cuz it's fun.

Great break down 👍 but look closer. I have been collecting the scanner boards like the one at 22:19 for easy gold. If you look along the rail using a magnifying glass, you can see and directly harvest gold wires. Sometimes there is also a chip with exposed gold wires. Yield is to be determined. Try not to touch the surface, they break easy. I have also found several electronic components that when split apart, show gold wires.

I see a lot of remarks from people who think they are going to do as well as Ben... with minimal effort and huge returns? Ben is clearly an anomaly among us wee humans. His passion for this trade is unlike anything else I have ever seen. His ability to GET scrap is awesome because he understands it. ALL of it. And it also helps that he lives in AUSTRALIA. Home to the some of the most EXOTIC, LARGEST and the MOST PRODUCTIVE mining areas in all of the World. Way to go Ben. I have learned so much from this guy...

he is certainly super skilled, passionate, and ambitious as well as diligent! A Terrific combination of characteristics for that style of work. still yet his most important characteristic in my humble opinion is his Outlook; this for him is his big winner as he is able to see an enjoyable experience in nearly any heap of what others may call garbage!

Hey Ben. Those spring pins on that printer ink caddy that u shown in this video, are they phosphorus pins like you’ve shown on computer motherboards? On the cartridges with ribbon, check the rectangular connection that the ribbons ends with, it has gold underneath it as well. Caution, when you remove the connector ink will come out, but it's worth it.

@eWasteBen
@eWasteBen 7 жыл бұрын
gold is used to connect components for good contact and gold doesn't tarnish easily so most things you see that look gold and connect is gold. you usually use something like hcl to remove gold, aqua regia is used to refine so usually 2nd stage

I'm not sure if there's anything like the U.S. Staples deal in the U.K. at present... W.H. Smiths used to run a similar scheme, but I don't know what the situation is now, What I do know is that Tesco gives you ClubCard points for your used inkjet cartridges, & the British Cancer Research Charity is always asking for them too. They have some sort of deal with the big recycling companies to get more cash than usual for them.

I think the printers in Uk are slighty different to yours Ben. Ive never come across CCD's in printer/scanners like the ones you have there. They all seem to be a much thinner bar with a long thin board backing on to the tube and though there is a thin strip of gold flashing running right across it its nothing compared to what your getting there. Maybe all the decent ones have long gone in the UK with our higher waste turnover and now we have an advanced model where the manufactures are using a lot less gold...who know ? its a mystery!! I hope now I said that I "actually" come across one with the stack of 30 scanner/printers Ive got to work through,because even just finding one of them would be sweet ! As ever nice vid.

+The Urban MIner Do people take the ink cartridges out of the printers here in Uk to give back to Staples for credits? Or is that just an American thing? I only have 2 printers to dismantle, both really old so I could let you know what I find when I get to them. One of the printers is one of those old dot matrix type ones. Good luck with your printers. Poo

poosmate Yeah we've got Staples over here but not a lot of them. My nearest one is so far away its not worth going there so I dont know if they give anything back for taking them there. With the price of scrap so low now I wouldnt be surprised if they dont give anything for them now.There are so many places anyway you can take cartridges in UK to recycle I prefer to scrap them for the gold on the print head and then dispose of the rest to the nearest recycle point.

Sorry to tell you this, but at 2:27, the gold visible on that cartridge is approximately 200 micrograms in total worth about 1c. The only way to extract useful metals from electronics like that is in very, very large quantities and that means containers-full daily emptied into a huge purpose-built furnace.
