Thanks for following me on instagram too! You definitely know what you're talking about when it comes to yells dude. My vocals pretty much revolve around doing yells. One thing I've noticed about doing this style correctly, you can tell if you're doing it right if you can feel you're diaphragm tighten and burn which I think is a good thing. You begin to tolerate the burn and and start to condition your higher ranges.

You can turn these into full on screams if you add compression and remove phonation if that makes sense. It’s a very versatile scream. Crystal Lake, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Wage War and Bad Omens all use it. It’s not limited to those chant esc type screams. Whenever you hear people compliment those types of screams where the vocalist is noticeably loud like people say about Ryo then there is a good chance he/she is doing it.
@KmartKingz9 ай бұрын
How do you drop voice and retain the grit? I'm pretty sure I end up just going into a pure vocal fry scream when I do this. Kind of sounds weak iirc. Been a while since I tried doing grit and losing the pitch component

Have you got some tips for clean hardcore punk yell/shout? Sort of death grips, minor threat, black flag vocal types? I’m bass-baritone. Should I just only yell from my diaphragm or should I use chest distortion at the same time or it’s not necessary to get this kind of style? I would like to know how these guys gets it.
@true2dagame2 жыл бұрын
u ever figure it out?
@guiltyhxc2 жыл бұрын
@@true2dagame Yell from your diaphragm and try to control the air you are letting out. traditional Hardcore Punk vocals are just guys yelling their brains out. You can notice that most singers from the 80's Hardcore scenes had their own sound, that's because there were not using techinque, Ian Mackaye (hope I didn't butchered his name lol) yelled, Henry Rollins when he was on Black Flag and S.O.A mostly sang in an aggresive way and shouted when he had too, HR from the Bad Brains did the same, sing and shout. Just try not to over do the yelling or you will end up with some skramz sounding vocals like Raein (unless that's what you are aiming for) which sounds like whispery, high pitched intense screaming. If you are aiming for a more Modern/Melodic Hardcore vocals like Defeater, Capsize, Ambleside, etc. use your diagphragm and control the air you're letting out until you find the spot where your voice breaks, once you did that try to scream and maintain that "break" or grit, you can also do fry screaming and add more of your voice to it. Classic Hardcore vocals and yelled vocals have little to no technique around them so you should try and take care of your voice so that you don't hurt yourself

So, since you mentioned Jon Mess, and there was Dance Gavin Dance's newest album playing in the background, I have a question about something Jon does on the record twice. Around the end of On the Run, and near the end of Death of a Strawberry, Jon does this weird "scream-singing" thing where he's screaming a melody or harmony. Do you think you could do a breakdown of what he's doing there on those songs? Or is it just him "shout screaming" a melody? I'm curious about that.

I have tried to do this but i end up constricting my vocals when i scream instead of having an open throat, I am baritone so i just figured that it's too way up for me and that is why i can't scream like that.
@LoosegripGR6 жыл бұрын
Try doing is on a lower register and working your way up. Not sure if it's the same thing but try to do the Gojira/Slipknot/Phil Anselmo thing. I'm a bass baritone (I can sing up to maybe an A on my best days but my consistent, never strained range is E2 to G4) and this has worked well for me. This technique is going to take away from your voice, it requires a huge power and it will fuck up your falsetto and high notes for the following hour or more.
@mikethai51095 жыл бұрын
Remember to project it up by looking up the the ceiling.
@vaderguitarplayer4 жыл бұрын
It really is like using a different muscle. I tried for years thinking I just could not do it, but then I was singing along to a Korn song and it just happened. I was like "f'ing really? That's it?" Anyone can do it, we are just so used to screaming with our vocal cords, with notes, that we don't know it. Babies actually metal scream naturally. Make "the grudge noise" the demon girl from the movie, and work on pushing that sound and projecting it with diaphragm rather than throat. Get a mid scream out and then you can learn to yell scream like he is doing in this video. The only scream I have not learned inthe month I have been doing it has been the very high fry scream. I am missing some understanding of it. But the cool part is I know I will figure it out at some point since I was able to so quickly figure out the others. Not joking, not posturing, not trying to pull one over on you. It doesn't hurt either. Every time I tried before I finally got it I coughed right after I gave it a go.

With any new style your body will naturally be opposed to it because it engages a different part of your body. I recommend stopping if it starts to hurt and waiting to try after it does its thing but if you do it for a few weeks and it hurts each time something is wrong. Also if it should uncomfortable not really painful if it actually hurts you ease off because you're most likely trying too hard.

@AuroraDorealus11 ай бұрын
@@archierock7931 I got some tips for you. I got a lot better at harsh vocals in the years. The issue with ned is that he has such a unique tone of voice, if you don’t sound somewhat like him it’ll be hard to yell like he does, but you can get close… Practice your false chords and vocal projection, TO THE MAX… His voice is all about the power he puts behind it. Earlier TF years you could tell he was straining his throat, but as soon as Floral Green dropped he learned correct control. I’d suggest you go after that album as a good practice example.

@@bjellida3976 Jamie’s vocals are pretty easy, it sounds like he’s just projecting really hard and screaming in some parts. The problem with both Jamie and Ned is that they have very distinct voices, not easy to replicate if your voice doesn’t already sound similar to theirs. if you want more examples of Jamie’s technique, look at parker cannon from The Story So Far. Slowly, can you show a transition from a clean normal singing voice to the yell? No one ever does that in their vids even thoufh that's the best way people can learn it, I find! Here's an example of what I mean, except for false cords from clean: www.dropbox.com/s/872zz34hd098ll8/Slow%20Normal%20to%20False.3gp?dl=0

Aerros If you put your mouse cursor on your comment,a little arrow pointing down should show up in the top right of your comment. That's the edit button.
