Just wanted to let you know, "Your the man"! Just got new tires for the fat bike and it was a royal pain in the ass to seat a 26x4.7 on an 80mm wheel. Done everything in the book, it just wasn't happening. Watched your video and it all came back to me, had the tire seated within 10 mins. Thank you for restoring my memory.....

Put soapy water all-round on both sides of (a) rim edge and (b) tire bead. Then pump tire slowly to (slightly above) maximum pressure and give it a few seconds to pop into place all-round. Works every time.

Pretty good video .You mention problems around the valve .After endless problems with seating I came up with my own idea that Id like to share with you .With pump connected to your valve push the valve in to the rim and keep it there until you can no longer hold it, as the pressure will want to push it out.The edge of the tyre should hopefully seat properly.I cant recommend this for compressors

Great tips Bikeman! I was raised around a automotive background, so bike tires are not so much a problem for me. Hell, in a pinch we even changed car tires out with jack levers back in the day! That being said, no one can possibly know the practical way to approach common problems encountered in all subject matters...but I would heartily recommend that any biker watch your tutorials and completely familiarize themselves with this most basic of biking skills. Might just save the day for them in the near future.

I use talcum powder on the tyre rim if they are a bit of a tight fit as it helps ease them on to the wheel without having to use levers and risk a pinch puncture. This may help if you don't have particularly strong hands .I find that talc on the tubes also stops them from sticking to the tyre and makes it easier to seat the valve straight too. Good tip about adding a little air at a time and seating it in the forks before inflating.

My Dad taught me a long time ago how to change a tire/tube. of course my Dad taught me to use flat bladed screwdrivers. I learned of tire levers on my own. He taught me to gradually air up the tube then leave the air out before putting more in till finally it is full. His theory was it would help straighten the tube if it was twisted in the tire. Funny story that a few years ago I overinflated a Slime filled tube. It looked like a crime scene in the garage. Splatter all over me, the car, and the garage walls and windows. LOL! Thanks Bikeman!!!

Seating mountain bike tires can be really frustrating. The tube inflates well before the tire bead moves out and pinches the side wall against the rim and then the bead can't slide out. You deflate the tire and the bead drops further into the middle channel. It can make you nuts. I find that soapy water makes it much easier. The soap allows the sidewall to slip up until the bead hits the rim.

I have never had a problem like this until recently. Last year I bought a fat bike. The winter went fine, but in the spring I decided to replace my studded tires with summer tires. When I first put the tires on the front was fine but the rear was improperly seated and the tire was out of round. I rode it for a bit but I was unhappy and I deflated it and played with it then I inflated it again. It is much better now but at higher speeds it “hops”. I’m going to give your advice a shot. I have been riding for many years and I’ve never had a problem but this my first fat bike.

Like this guy, learned a lot from him. Only have one criticism, i would not use soapy water to seat the tire. Water can get in between the tire and tube, if you use your bike in a cold climate with temps below freezing the soapy water inside will freeze causing all kinds of issues. There is a blue lube made just for seating tires, shops use it on car tires. Not sure of the name of it or where to get it, maybe someone can comment on that.

Very useful video, thanks ;) At 56 yrs I just now so poorly centered a tire that it was coming off the rim at the valve. I have been putting on bike tires, at various points, since I was freakin 10yrs and have never seen that. It makes sense that it could happen because of the dropped center in the rim. One key thing I had been doing wrong is pulling the valve tight to the rim. I don't think the tube was even fully in the tire due to that. On inspection it appeared to be trapped slightly by the rim. The correct answer is to push the stem in while inflating. And, of coarse, don't assume more pressure will seat the bead properly..because ..well....it has a 100 times before.

Here's something that applies for any owner of a vintage bike with non-hooked rims: don't air the tire up to anything above 75psi. Older rims like Schwinn's K2 "tubular" (actually a clincher rim) don't have the bead hook modern rims have, and as a result, the tire can blow off the rim quite easily at higher pressure. I learned that the hard way when I bought an old 70's Schwinn road bike. I decided to take a ride around the block, so I aired the tires up to the recommended 90psi. BOOM! Sounded like a shotgun blast. Sure enough, it had original steel Schwinn rims without a bead hook (hookless rims were common those days). Ears rang for quite some time. Now when it comes to seating the bead, as long as you get it close (i.e. no obvious indication of blowing off), the tire will seat itself when inflated to normal pressures. I like to get it close, then put some air in and let it sit for 10-15 mins, then add some more air, letting it sit for a bit every time until I get to normal pressure. If it's still not even, I take it for a slow ride around the block, which usually does the trick. If that doesn't work, then going slightly over the max pressure will.

I continue having a hard time to get tire mounted square on my Ghost. I do not like to over pressure the tire with my hand pump as it could break out in the middle of nowhere. I have the solution! I lube the tire bead with a dab of KY jelly. Worked great. Bead slips right on square with about 50 PSI. As KY is a water based lube I do not believe it will do any damage to the tire or tube. KY is also easy to bring with my tire patch kit. What do you think?

I bought a Ghost cross over road bike from R.E.I. In May 2016. I have had about seven flats. No matter what I try I can't get the tires to mount square. I took it back to R.E.I. for advice. They sold me a new set of tires. Their tech guy mounts by using high pressure air. I can't do that on the road, my hand pump only goes to 65.psi. I have tried all as you suggest. Including soapy water. No luck. I am thinking of returning the bike to R.E.I as I don't have any use for a bike that can't be repaired on the road. Any final thoughts?, thanks.

We've had a couple of chinese tires that won't seat proper. We've used some wax to maki it pop and settle. Aaand anywhoo they still won't settle. They're cheap, chinese and a bit off. It's not much a half of a Millimeter, but still it's not satisfying. After truing the wheel to 0.10mm it's a major disappointment.

fwiw I've discovered Kenda Tires are having issues (across the brand) seating properly. My LBS was able to seat a set of kenda kriteriums with some tool but like the guy with the trainer, I have a kenda trainer that won't seat either. One of the guys in the club mentioned the Kenda tubes. (which I have in the tire)being an issue. There's a flat spot where the tires bead hasn't seated. I've heard suggestions on making sure the tube is pushed up into the tire all around before inflating and using lube (talcum powder was my choice). If (like me) you have a IGH setup (alfine11)this issue is a bitch because it requires the rear wheel be installed just so and the cable adjustment be fine tuned every time you take it off.
