Great video. Thank you very much. One question, at the start of the video, your loops are very tight and leverage a U shaped loop. On all the demonstrations however, it isn't there. In order to constantly lift and drop a plow on my ATV using the wench, should I use a small loop with the U shaped tool over and above the sleeve ? Or make the look bigger without the U shape? Aside from that, great video. I wasn't doing 2 or 3 swages the last 2 times I did this so I probably was loosing cable strength. Learned a lot from your video. Thanks again.

Great question, Phillipe. Wire Rope Thimbles are a great way to protect cable strands from abrasion or crushing that can occur from constant use. While they're not required, many prefer them in an assembly like yours. Thanks for the comment, and we're glad you like the video!

Thank you so much for making this very informative video. I have a vinyl coated stainless steel rope that has diameter of 1/16 bare wire and 3/32 diameter coated. And I bought sleeves for 3/32 diameter. But now, I learned that I should cut the vinyl before putting on the sleeve. Is it okay to still use the 3/32 sleeve since it will anyway flatten upon swaging?

People have come up with lots of other incorrect ways to smash these fittings with hammers or vises, but those methods may fatigue the aluminum sleeve in a way that will promote cracking and failing. Using any other method than an appropriate tool is not recommended as there is no consistency in their load holding ability or fatigue life.

5:00 According to MS51844 zinc plated copper sleeves should be used on steel cable and tin plated copper or stainless steel sleeves should be used on stainless steel cable (CRES).
@E-rigging
@E-rigging 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, @catranger01, MS51844 does call for Tin plated copper sleeves when using stainless steel cable because Tin does have a slightly less corrosive reaction than Zinc when in contact with stainless steel. However, stainless steel cable swaged with zinc plated copper sleeves are time tested in both land-based and marine applications worldwide, and do satisfy loading holding and corrosion resistance standards for many typical applications. Strict adherence to coating types outlined in the government standard MS51844 is critical for regulated applications such as airplane manufacturing and military contracts. These fittings shouldn’t be used for overhead lifting applications. It is always recommended to get a qualified person to design and approve your application before using rigging assemblies. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments, Have a great day!

Thanks for the added detail on this specific topic. I had the same question but now I'm still wondering if I can use plain copper on stainless wire rope, just because they're easier to find. Any experience with that combination? Do aluminum sleeves have any place in this discussion? My application is not critical but I tend to try to do things perfect even when it doesn't matter... Thank you!
