Here are the criteria I use to select or judge racing pigeons. It’s a long video, but the content should provide pointers when purchasing racing pigeons which can be VERY expensive!
What other physical traits or criteria do you use when selecting a racing pigeon? Put them in the comments!

Old Ko (Jacobus den Exter) had one of the best strains in the world. He bred about 20 youngsters every year and over a period of about 40 years he always had pigeons capable of classifying 25 times of 26 races. (1:4) In ONE season. Selecters that selected on fysical caracteristics almost always thought very little of his birds. Ko didn't say a word and just smiled.

THANK YOU JAMES, I agree. The first thing my FATHER taught me was BALANCE and VENTS the VENTS are what my FATHER called ( THE WORKING CAPACITY) . If you can get your little finger in between the vent bones and they are very sharp at the ends that pigeon is no good as a breeder, probably not a racer either. Unless it is a very fast sprint race with the wind behind it. Any work to do it will be gone. HOPE ABBY IS STILL GOING STRONG. SHE IS A LITTLE FIGHTER AND WHILE THERE'S FIGHT THERE IS HOPE. GOD BLESS HER 🙏 ❤

@@RFRP Yes but I hope that any new starters DON'T try to force their little fingers inside a Pigeons vents THAT'S A BIG NO NO. If any new starters are unsure let the training and racing sort them out. JAMES , if you look through the pedigrees of the ones with white to nails, you will find that they have some white or pied (splash) in their ancestry. They could breed you white flights. You could have to go way back in their ancestry, but it's definitely in them. Yes I was SHOCKED and a little bit EMBARRASSED at first because I don't think I have done anything specal to warrant it but THANK YOU 🌟💯👍👍❤

18:03 The white claws just means how close their genes are from the top breeder. If the great grandparents had white claws and they were top pigeons you’d most likely select based on those genes. But if you don’t really know the blood strain and characteristics of their ancestors, white claws wouldn’t matter. Great video by the way! Keep it up 👍🏻😃

Thank you for the video bud. One thing though if you put the Rock on a slippery surface I choose you. By this I refer to conditioning, loft management and fancier skills. The reality is that I have seen a multiple overall federation loft winning fancier who for health reasons had to give up his birds. The guy who took over his loft did absolutely nothing with these birds for the next two seasons. Eventually he just wanted to get rid of the lot fortunately the previous fancier heard about it and went for a visit where he found the birds well but unfit as the particular strain he used to fly needed way more training and training flights than they were getting compared to the birds that the new guy was racing successfully. He could not believe the training program the old guy gave him. Things like, bird flies a 250 mile on Saturday gets a training toss 100 mile on Sunday. Anyway a couple other things but long story short after splitting the two groups the new (previously no good) won the last 6 races of the year and took the loft to Federation overall champion. I do realise that pigeon racing has changed a lot with people like yourself doing these videos and instructional information is easily available for the new fancier to me that is almost more important since not all fanciers can afford the one loft and on the whole pigeon population quality levels on the average have improved drastically over the last 20 years.
@RFRP
@RFRP 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insightful comment! These are great points. I agree that the sport has changed quite a bit over the past 20 years with information readily available and the increase in exporting/importing birds from around the world, one loft races etc. and the overall quality of the breed has improved drastically. Thanks for following up on this! I sometimes forget to come back to specific topics I mention. 2022 was my first year sending to OLRs. I sent 2 birds. One ended up doing extremely well: 24th 250 mi smash race, 30th 350 mi final 1:28s behind 1st Tucson Triple Challenge OLR. A full sibling was sent as a breeder to another fancier and bred champion YB (incl. 1st combine 250 mi) in his first year breeding. This year I sent two birds to CA to fly: one was 1st combine (Camillia City Comb.) 254 mi and scored at the combine level in 3 of the 5 races. That is just the results from one pair, 4 youngsters tested. Several other results I'm quite pleased with given the relatively few birds I send out.

Think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I think physical traits more important when you choosing babies to go to one loft races, obviously they must be from a family which has already performed very well with a sound pedigree and with the results you mention. If i buy a great performing pigeon on line in a one loft race eg final winner with other good positions and it hasnt got many of the physical traits mentioned i will still gladly breed with it, perhaps maybe pair it to a performing bird which has the preferred traits you mention. Not a fan of big birds at all but i suppose if they dont breed big babies, its ok. Think breeding feathers, white toe nails, eye sign a lot of hog wash to. Most important criteria i think end of the day are RESULTS but well said what you said in my opinion makes total sense and Joe Nemelka is definitely a great pigeon fancier 👌. Keep well.

I thought the tail going up and down was merely the bird trying to keep its balance
@RFRP
@RFRP 2 жыл бұрын
Great comment! If the tail is held out straight despite the bird being rotated it indicates the bird has good balance--it doesn't need to compensate for the movement by flicking its tail up or down, etc. Hope that clarifies things
@ceengel3597
@ceengel3597 2 жыл бұрын
@renaissance correct! Some pigeons balance themselves in your hand by lifting or dropping the tail. It doesn’t matter. Some Winners do that like some thouroughbred race horses trot sideways to the starting gate but they run straight coming home and win sometimes. It depends on their bits in the mouth or if they wearing blinkers etc. Or even how the jockey is sitting likewise depends a lot on how the fancier is holding the pigeon. But balance is actually the weight of the pigeons chest compared to the weight of its tail. Some pigeons are chest heavy and some have a thicker longer tail and are heavier at the tail. After handling many many pigeons you will learn if the pigeon is chest heavy or tail heavy or perfectly balanced

Interesting question! You can use Google maps to calculate the distance to each loft using the measure distance tool. If you don’t have a pigeon clock you could Document when a bird arrives using your phone (either photo or video of the bird on the landing board or in your hand so you can see the band. There is an app for calculating yard/minute speed but I can’t remember what it is called. Should come up in a search though. Let me know what you decide to do!

Hi...i have a racing pigeon pair for like 4 5 months now will they fly away once they get their feathers back if yes how to train them to come back??
@RFRP
@RFRP 9 ай бұрын
It is always a risk. They may stay and they may take off. If you are not willing to risk is then I wouldn’t let them out. But it sounds like maybe you have clipped their flight feathers? If so, then maybe they will stick around if they have been out often while their feathers were clipped

How do you hold the pigeon I dont think im doing it right.
@RFRP
@RFRP 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. With one hand hold the feet, tail, and wings together. And with the other hand support under the chest of the bird. For increased stability, Hold the bird facing toward you and up against your belly. If you watch several videos you’ll see how I do it, which is the standard way. Good luck, and thanks for following!!
@curiousomigamer7963
@curiousomigamer7963 2 жыл бұрын
Practice and hold your birds alot, don't harass them, but be gentle, feel confident, pigeons know when you don't know how to hold them and when you're nervous, notice on this video when he handled the dark checker he pretty much let go of the bird and the bird didn't flip out. That's the bird feeling comfort and confidence from the handler, it's second nature , your best bet is do it alot.

hey bro, hope you're doing well, i just want to tell you, you don't have to believe me, but the tail does'nt matter if it bends up or down doen'nt matter, me and my grandpa does fly races in S.A in Polokwane, my grandpa has a few pigeons that has a little bit bended up or down tail, but all the older men in my grandpa's younger time, said it does'nt matter how the tail look or what, but if you go and look a little bit closer the tail is'nt part of the body, it is joined together, so that does'nt matter, the pigeon do steering and also just braking with his tail, but have a nice day, and think a little about that👍

Thanks for your interest in my pigeons!! Really appreciate your support. I wish it was easy to export birds to India, but it is not. You would need to provide India's requirements for importing birds. You would likely need to apply for an import permit. Costs for exporting (not the price of the bird) is about $300 USD per bird.
