Summary
This is a SUPER detailed, overexplained tutorial for how to self-shoot, including camera comparisons, lens comparisons, photography equipment, and tips for focus and posing! I’m not a professional photographer, I’ve learned mainly through google and experience, so this is from the perspective of a complete beginner for content creators! I also review focal length and f-stop, as well as compare the 40mm vs 50mm vs 35mm vs 85mm lenses, which took me an eternity so please validate me.

Notes and Updates:
➞ I didn’t clarify enough that I’m using literally the same 50mm 1.4 lens on each camera, which requires an EF-M to EF mount adapter on the mirrorless M6 camera. Based on reviews, it looks like the 32mm 1.4 is the best overall portrait lens for the M6 (and EF-M cameras in general).
➞ I also didn’t go over SD-Cards, but just get a Class 10 one (for SanDisk that’s silver and black, NOT blue); the older ones basically just have a slower write speed. That means if you shoot a lot of pictures in a row, your camera may give a pop up notice that it needs time to process your images. Just a little bit of a slower process!
➞ Also lighting can help your autofocus work better! That's just not usually my issue lol

Have you ever considered using a monitor or tv and running hdmi to mirror the camera screen to help with framing? Not sure which cameras can do that(clean hdmi at least) or if it affects anything else like autofocus etc, but it could be a more accurate method of framing combined with a mirror. One maybe helps set the pose and the other helps frame the pose on the screen. Good stuff tho, I always like seeing people's setups and process!

Ive never connected an external monitor or tv since I have the flip screen. Where I shoot from isn't super conducive to that, but I've also been doing it long enough that I'm usually pretty confident in my shots without it. Def agree it would be a huge help though, and wish i had some recommendations for display monitors for people with non-flip-screen cameras!

@@HendoArt I think I remember Josh Yeo and DSLR Video Shooter made all-in-one video shooting stands with a monitor and a c-stand on wheels so its easy to move around like your wheeled tripod. But I could see something like that being useful to shooting photos as well as video. Could probably adapt a light enough monitor onto a tripod... Sorry I cant make a specific recommendation, was just a thought I had while watching!

there's a bunch of inexpensive roughly 15" displays that are plug-n-play that are worth checking out. they have some delay issues, but for what you're doing that shouldn't matter. just mount it on a joby and plug into your camera and it can go whereever it's comfortable for you and out of the shot.

I have watched a lot of photography tips but by far this is the absolute best video I have seen on the subject. It may not sound like it but being a self portrait style photographer is very different than a normal/headshot/wedding/fashion photographer. continuous lighting over strobes is way more practical when you’re shooting your own pictures. And figuring out how to mix your posing with camera and lighting positions is a huge hurdle. thank you so much for this video it has helped immensely.

Loved the tutorial Hendo, you managed to be as thorough as always covering enough of all the key topics in a professional manner while still keep a touch of the lighthearted charm that is for me at least the signature of all your video content. I especially liked how you not only gave us both a budget friendly set up but also a more expensive one while explaining while the budget friendly set can get the job done the more expensive one will make it easier especially in post production. Your recommendations for backdrops, lighting and posing tips were also super helpful and gave solutions for a few of the things I don't like about some of my own self shoots. The fact that you managed to squeeze so much into just a 30 minute video is amazing and I can't wait to see the follow up videos you're developing to help bring even more clarity to there respective subtopics to photography in general.

Very good video for sure! One thing about the camera choices that should be mentioned as a "FYI" for those that are shopping for a camera is crop factor vs lens focal length. If you do have a full-frame camera, a 50mm is gonna be a 50mm lens. But, if you get a crop-sensor camera like the EOS M6, that 50mm is going to be more like a 75mm (give or take, as most crops add about half again more to the focal length), so the camera would have to be just that much further away from the subject if the person wants the framing to be the same. Another good tip especially for just indoor shots with a flat background like paper backdrop, if you aren't worrying about blurring out the background because its one color, you can close down the aperture on the lens to give a deeper depth-of-field. Basically make more things in-focus. However, a caveat to that is that you will lose light, meaning you would have to use brighter lights or you would have to turn down your shutter speed and/or ISO on the camera (which could introduce motion blur/noise respectively) Shameless plug for reading these two tips: follow me on IG @medianextstudios for my portrait/cosplay/boudoir photography! :) Love your work, Hendo!

@@HendoArt I had a small 20mm pancake lens for my GH4. Really useful for gimbal use or if you want to be discreet. I also like using about a 21mm on women, because it show off their facial features without stretching or bending too much of the image. Of course, that's on the video side. But it probably can apply here too.
