Illustrative editorial photos are images that illustrate a subject of human interest through staging. Branded product photos fall into this category if you are using a stock photography platform like Shutterstock. In this video, I talk about how you can upload illustrative editorial photos of products (including common household items) without a release form and create some fun passive income for yourself. Product photography is one of the easiest ways to create high quality content for stock photography platforms. Plus, it allows you to get creative with what you already have!

Thank you Nicole, When I started stock photography about 3 weeks ago, I found your channel and subscribed it. Now I have been sold 4 photo and earn $1.15 because your tips on videos. In Indonesia, that money is just enough for buying a lunch 😂 but it motivates me to do more on stock photography

Very cool! When I look at my analytics I see a lot of people from Asia watching these videos. But it makes sense: if someone in the USA makes, for example, $500 per month on stock photography, it doesn't cover too many expenses. But in Asia, that can get you much, much further. If I could buy lunch for $1... that would be amazing!! Stock photography can provide a lot of opportunities in places where the cost of living is less expensive. By the way, I'll be going to Vietnam in 2 weeks - not too far away :)

Dear Nicole. I really have to thank you for all the good and clear information you provide in your videos. I created an account with Shutterstock yesterday. Mostly because I have so many pictures that just lie around collecting "dust". And now it suddenly makes a little more sense to take the camera wherever I go. I used your tips and got approved 4 of 10 photos at the first submission. Then I corrected some mistakes and got more tips from you. And the next three were all approved at once. And when I now search for Fisher skis at Shutterstock, my picture comes as number 1 in the search. Very nice to see that all your tips worked. Thank you again. Now I have finally found a new value in my hobby.

Love your videos Nicole. I've 'dabbled' with stock photography on and off for years and never sold a single thing... until now. With a completely different mindset (largely influenced by your videos) I uploaded 40 editorial images over a 10 day period during March. Hardly prolific but I've made my first two sales over the weekend and I'm absolutely thrilled! OK, so I've made a grand total of $2.13 but I didn't think I'd make a cent until I'd uploaded hundreds of images. It's spurred me on to upload more. The two images sold? One is of an empty school classroom and the other is of a castle. Even though I've only 40 images I wouldn't expected either of those two subjects to make my first sales. Thanks again, Nicole! Keep inspiring me.

Great inspiration Nicole, I'll bust out a few product photos after we move this month. Oddly, I took a photo of coffee brands in a Walmart aisle. Dreamstime rejected it because it saw a Starbucks logo on a box. I looked through images on Dreamstime and found literally tons of Starbucks logos from inside the stores! I pointed out their error but they mysteriously went radio silent and never approved the image. I just take it with a grain of salt and move on...

Hey there, yes I use Alamy, Adobe Stock and have registered for a few others that I'll be uploading to in the coming days. Alamy pays quite well, but downloads are very infrequent (at least, for me). @@NicoleGlass Thanks Nicole. I just signed up to Alamy and started uploading a few images. I believe I also have Adobe, but I have to double check. I'm wondering if you have a "workflow" video... like if you're going to upload 20 images to multiple sites, how do you keep stuff organized, where do you keyword (actually I think you keyword inside Lightroom, if I'm not mistaking), if someone doesn't have lightroom what would be the alternative, so on so forth. Awesome, I had no idea how people do this! Next question - when you take pictures in foreign countries do you tag them in both languages? An object or location etc. I always wonder if say, the french people type in french words or english words when looking for a shot.
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Shutterstock translates the keywords and they do require you to upload your content in English. But sometimes I'll throw in a foreign word if it is not flagged as a spelling mistake by Shutterstock. For example, I'll often use both the keywords "Germany" and "Deutschland". This of course only works for limited words.

Nicole you are the queen of stock photography. If I lived near DC I'd try to get a photo of you and upload it to Shutterstock but would that then be illustrative or just documentary? Hm.....
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Hahaha. If you saw me walking down the street at an event in a public place and I didn't notice you, you could probably get that through as an editorial image. But if I pose for you, you'd need a model release to upload it as commercial. But don't get any ideas... I'm usually being a total introvert and editing a KZfaq video somewhere inside.

@@NicoleGlass Noted! One more question.....what about submitting highly filtered photos to stock agencies? Would they serve as illustrative content ? I don't advertise externally. It is not my main income source. For photography, my main income source is corporate events. But no one on this channel seems to be very interested in that... despite the fact that it's extremely high paying, haha.

Great informative videos. I have a question though, Nicole.... RE. when you were talking about shooting shop fronts and businesses in ur local area to get started with stock....You can submit these images without any legal hassle as editorial,yes? And how would they be used and by whom?....say for example an external shot of my local Asda supermarket (interesting huh)....how would that be used potentially? Id like to know because taking shots like this and time editing etc risk burning away my artistic creativity! lol..So I want to make sure it's potentially financially worth it. Gracias!

Hi Nicole...do you prep the product? For example, if using a jar of peanut butter, would you make it spotless before shooting it? I don't mean shooting the jar with peanut butter on the outside, but it might have finger prints, or other marks. Would you clean those first, or try to capture the essence of the jar in it's 'natural' environment without excessive staging for a product shoot? I guess I'm simply asking what do you do before the shot?
@NicoleGlass

Honestly, I do both. Sometimes I like to show off the realness, and other times I like having more clean shots. You can create lots of different versions!

How do you allowed to do this. When I tried to upload an item as editorial I got a warning that there were brand logos visible and anyone found uploading editorial images to get around the "no logos" in commercial shots will be banned.

You've inspired me to delve more into editorials - thank you! I totally get the product part of this. However, would photos of people dining at outdoor restaurants (restaurant names included on signage) be considered illustrative or documentary? Or are they not editorial at all? I live on the Netherlands/Germany border and these types of restaurants are EVERYWHERE, so I'd like to capitalize on them before moving back to the US! Haha!

First let me say that I love your videos and the passion that you show for what you do. And I'm sorry if I rain on your parade but I just can't understand why someone would consider stock photography. If you added up all the hours spent shooting, editing, keywording and uploading the hourly rate must be miniscule. I guess if it's just a hobby and a photographer has lots of time on their hands it would make sense. But giving an image away for under a dollar that might be used in a corporate advertising campaign? That's just plain silly. I wonder how many stock photographers sit down and figure out how much they earn per hour? These stock agencies are laughing all the way to the proverbial bank.

Hi Steve, there are different ways you can look at it. For one, I don't upload my most valuable work. There are some photos I would never want to put up on microstock. Secondly, most of the time I'm not going out to shoot specifically for microstock. I've done a little bit more of that because of this channel, but in general I'm usually uploading photos that I took for other purposes. For example, I photographed Trump and Merkel for a specific company, but I retained the rights to those images and they did not care if I uploaded them elsewhere. Therefore, I also put them on Shutterstock and have made a few thousand extra dollars just by doing that. (Over time, of course.) Microstock can be a waste of time if someone has the wrong approach and uploads blades of grass, clouds, etc. But for me personally, the time I've spend uploading is definitely worth the payout. But I agree that it's definitely not for everyone, and I would never do it if that's my only reason for photography.

What's your experience with Adobe Stock? Is it worthwhile uploading there too?
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 жыл бұрын
It depends what you focus on. Adobe Stock does not allow editorial images. So if your focus is commercial images, then definitely upload there as well. But if you shoot primarily editorial, then perhaps not.

Hmm! I recently took some photos of buildings on the local college campus and they were rejected because they showed building names such as "Bumbler Hall" or whatever and they were rejected when posted simply as stock photos, maybe if I had used this procedure I would have been successful.

Can a photo of a city skyline with identifiable buildings, but no logos nor signs, be sold for commercial use without copyright release? When is the outside of a building protected by copyright?

Dear Nicole I have a question. Are the rules of editorial/commercial valid worldwide? Let's say I take pictures of a person and I sell it on Shutterstock without a model release, and I sell it for editorial use only, if the unaware person finds his picture on a magazine, can I be in trouble? What about if the buyer uses the picture for commercial use anyway? If I publish a picture of a recognizable person on Shutterstock for editorial use (because I have no model release), and the person is unaware of that picture, and, in my country is not legal to do so, but seems to be legal on Shutterstock. What happens if the picture is sold and used in my country? What it is sold in a foreign country (where perhaps it is legal), and the person in the picture finds out? What if the picture is illegally used in my country? In all these cases, who is the person responsible if trouble arises? Thank you very much if you take the time to read this messy question. I would be happy to have this question clarified, or, I can do my research if you know any web page where I could eventually find an answer. Thanks a lot. I appreciate very much your videos. Have a happy life.

Hi Axel, it depends what country you live in and what the laws of that country are. Europe recently passed a new privacy law where you could possibly get in trouble for doing this. In the United States, however, you can take photos of anyone in a public place and you won't get in trouble. So in this instance, just make sure to check what the law is in your country.

I have trouble with brand names on SS. When I type a brand name in it always eliminates or auto corrects it to something else. No matter what I do I can’t get it to take. Also do these types of images require the description to include all the same things as a documentary type such as date/ location/ exact model of the brand such as GoPro hero 7 vs just GoPro? Thanks!

Hi, Nicole I don't make enough money to justify paying a monthly fee to use Photoshop. What can I do ? Buy an older version off eBay I need to edit RAW Images with professional results and remove any access noise. Also, i'm thinking of using DaVinci resolve for my videos -- is that good for professional results or, is there something better ?

Dear Nicole. One more question. If I have a valuable picture to sell to magazines, or newspapers, maybe because I am a witness of something, how can I let them know that I have that particular picture that they might need? Is there any web site that is like a bridge between the photographer and the magazines or newspapers? Thanks again.

Hey Axel, you can e-mail the news media yourself (I have done that a few times) or you can list it for sale as stock. Alamy is actually a good platform for news photography.
