I started cutting wood last year this year just in the month of November of 23 I sold 15 cords in a single week. Turned around bought a log splitter I have reached out and become friends with all the arborist and foresters in the hampton roads area they bring me logs and drop it on my property. Best choice I made was starting a firewood and lumber business plus my wife has been helping and learning because I am active duty military she has been pushing for machines ie log splitter and wood processor when I am gone. My 10 year old and 6 year old have been helping stack cords of wood. My daughter told me yesterday she wants to try selling bundles of wood and wants to be responsible for them I said okay. Little does she know I am going to let her keep all the money from her bundles and start teaching them how to be financially successful in life. Had a guy tell me that burning pine in a house will cause the whole city to burn down needless to say I don't do business with him. I love that I have customers already asking for wood for next year. Your videos have helped us alot understand what we are doing

The part about keeping in touch with your clients is so important. I had a lawn service for 35 years also did snow removal and sold some firewood too. When I went to look at a lawn job. And I showed up to give them an estimate. Over half the people were so glad you just showed up they were estatic. They said I called five people this week and your the only one that showed up. I don’t know how some people stay in business. Keep the good videos coming. Good nite Irene.

I have 3 that want wood, a whole heating session ahead, and I have a lot that want for,this current year for heating so,its got to be ready now. Thw best component i have gotten was from a lady in her mid 80 telling me " it's nice to finally meet a young man that is not on something" Happy father's day Chris..😊👍

Good video, but I think a few things are missed here, specifically with supply and demand. Focusing on the supply of trees is actually not the main concern. The main concern is the supply of alternate sources of heating. You can have an unlimited amount of trees in an area, but if most people have access to natural gas heating, burning wood won't make as much sense (the cost to produce the wood is cost prohibitive compared to the alternative source). This source (supply) of alternate forms of heat (in this example) is what dictates the price of the wood, not the supply of the wood itself (secondary concern.) This ties in directly with demand to give you the price equilibrium of the heat source. To wrap up, most people who heat their homes with wood, aren't doing so because of how much wood is available or not available, it's because there is a shortage or abundance of other viable heating alternatives (like gas). Electric heat is one of the least efficient ways to heat a home, which is why in certain areas, wood heating is viable. Cheers!
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 3 ай бұрын
Maybe so but you totally missed the 2 main reasons people heat with wood. One because there is nothing like real fire and as hot as you want it wood heat. Two because MOST people who heat with wood do so because they DO NOT pay for the wood...they get it for "free" off of their own property or have access to other FREE wood.

Good video and what you said is right on the money. I live in the middle of the Allegheny National Forest about 500.000 thousand acres I am in Mckean county Penn. You can get a permit to cut wood for home heating at the ranger station for 50 bucks that keeps the price down on a cord of wood a face cord goes for 60 bucks half of what you get. I dont do that as to time consuming i have it trucked in and buy about 60 tri axle loads per year and that give me about 22 to 24 face cords per truck load. Like you I deliver 95% of all my wood with the dump trailer I can move a lot of wood in a day and I made 1 of my pick up trucks dump like a dump truck for smaller loads what a time saver been doing wood for 22 years now. P.S. the Mr scuba 1 comes from back in the day when I did rescue diving and a lot of recreational diving friends started calling me Mr scuba or just scuba

Great info of typs of wood I live in SE Pa love the red oak but what I’ve experienced is that even standing dead red oak takes a good while after cutting spitting to be good seasoned wood . Here in Pa we had the Ash bore come through and kill 90% of our ash it’s a killer to cut have to be careful when cutting down ! One tree we do have a lot of in my area is black birch which everything I’ve researched is a great wood for BTU but the standing dead or one that hits the ground punks out really weird as opposed to other hardwoods. Wondering if you’ve experienced that?

Another thing with selling green wood is chimney fires due to green wood . Knew a guy who got sued for selling it green . I don’t think he ended up being liable but I know he gives receipts with some explanation that they have inspected and except the product as is . Something that protects him somewhat . Much as i would love to add this business to my other businesses I don't think its possible just 1000 feet behind my house is a tree service with 22 acres I just looked him up he said he has 75 cords on hand. So he is a principle competitor. And he gets the wood for free. Then you have my landscaping yard where I dump my grass and leaves and stick they also sell mulch and soil and because they take all the wood from the entire areas tree services 100s of them. They also make fire wood and how can you compete with that.

Most people like White Birch as it looks pretty sitting in the fireplace or stacked next to, Needs to be processed as soon as possible before the bark starts slipping and you end up with nekkid wood which looks like any other wood and is not as pretty to look at IMHO, Curios if anyone else in other parts of the country sees Yellow Birch in abundance or only interspersed in Hard maple stands?

Sure thing Jimmy! A full cord is a stacked pile of 16" pieces in 3 rows that are each 4' high and 8' long or 128 cubic feet. 1/3 of a cord is one row of 16" stacked pieces that is 4' high and 8' long also called a face cord or one rik.

Fireplace folks really like birch. 10 -15 years ago we had tons of birch. The birch seems to have died off in our area, it’s kinda unusual to see a birch tree that’s over 8” in diameter now a days. With all the recent blow downs, I find it hard to believe anyone would pay for firewood. But people are lazy and seem quite willing to pay someone to cut storm damage trees , pay to haul the wood away. And then the same people will pay for firewood. May as well just burn money.

It comes down to time and ability really, I don't do my own dentistry work , I have a drill and teeth but choose to have someone more skilled do the work, it is kinda the same with firewood.

Thanks for the Ted Talk. I predict firewood is going to be a very hot commodity this fall/winter. With Bo xiden at the helm of the US titanic it’s just starting to get bad. Some are still enjoying the cruise, some are rearranging the deck chairs, I’m in one of the life boats. No support for CBDC or ESG from me, which some would say is ironic coming from a guy with a high efficiency wood boiler, 10kW PV solar, 160ft2 hot water solar, and 4 Prius’s with an annual registration of $640. More irony…each car has a $75 surcharge due to the fact they don’t burn enough gas. All electric is $100! 🙄🤦‍♂️🤬

black birch in n. east is better than all oaks and malples in btu content, most customers believe oak is best here to, black birch can be intensified by the winter fresh gum aroma. white birch on the other hand is poor firewood, but looks pretty. I've also found to keep white birch logs of ground before processing as it will start to rot it seems in a matter of weeks on the ground.
@pyroman6000
@pyroman6000 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. White birch in particular has bark that's VERY efficient at holding water in. It really needs to be bucked, split, and stacked off the ground as soon as is practical to avoid spoilage. I'd love to get some black birch, but I've never seen it around here.

The firewood gospel by Chris Carlson!! LOL!! Everything you said makes complete sense!! You definitely have the perfect area for selling wood and I have the perfect area for cutting firewood. I can get my wood for pretty much nothing but it costs a lot to deliver it to your area. It doesn't cost you much for delivery but it costs you quite a bit to get your wood. It all comes out about the same in the end. Take care my friend!!😀😀👍💚💚 Logger Al
