One of the best training videos I've ever seen. My Rhodesian Ridgeback requires me to schedule his training appropriately. He is focused in training but as soon as I stop working him, he wonders off sniffing every place he can go to. I had to accept that as it is his nature. Also energy levels need to be understood as he can't work as readily as my German Shepherd. I wish the dog competition organisers start understanding that all breeds can't do the same thing as easily.

I didn't even notice the lenght of the video! Great information, thank you! I sure need to adapt this to how I see my dog and how we're training. And I always compare to others(with everything not just dog training). But I sure need to focus at what I have :)

that's super important and most people just don't even think about it; they're just concerned that their dogs perform. I love when my dog performs, i also like when I know they're well - that their hips and elbows are okay, and I think it's a handler's responsibility to become connected enough with the dog on an energy level to tell if something is just not right. There's the denial owners have when you spend a ton of money on a beautiful dog and train them for years and find out there's something wrong. Also with all the rotts I've noticed they can't stand heat - they really can't. I hose him down all the time, and our retrievers get hair cuts and they like being wet also. Black dogs get real hot people. Don't just let them out into the sun for hours - unless you want them to have a sunstroke.

You have the best advice I have seen here on KZfaq about so many breeds, When I see people arguing about stupid things on other dog training channels I direct them to your channel, 2 weeks later that person thanks me for introducing them to your Channel! Thank you Stonnie for all the great advice, I volunteer at a shelter and we all love watching your Videos!

These continue to be awesome training videos ! Clear explanations.....simple plans...…..great examples of the demeanor to exude with your dog. And, they present a series of building blocks to add to your tool kit while at the same time, emphasizing the importance of repetition. Do it a 1000 times until it is muscle memory for you and the dog.

Stonnie, I love your teachings; they are always simply insightful. Question: when you send the dogs home after their training time with you. Will the dog maintain the learned behaviors for the owner, or will he try the owner to ensure that the owner will expect the same behaviors. Asking from a trainers point of view.

Excellent EXCELLENT advice Stonnie! As an owner of standard poodles for years(don't laugh) it was very important before working with them and after to 'check' them over. Especially their pads, arm pits and such for weed seeds and general overall ability. Once, my standard poodle and I went for a long hike. I on horse back and very young didn't take into account she hadn't done that before. Poor girl! She had so much heart and tried so hard. I felt so very bad for her I ended up throwing her up in the saddle with me and took her home and dutifully doctored her paws for days! My lesson learned! Now, remember, I was young and dumb at the time but one very important lesson my mother taught me was to 'listen' to your animals and they will 'tell' you that something ain't quite right. I got so many other stories similar to this one and this one is already so long! Have a blessed day ya'll!

Standard poodles are amazing dogs. Smart as whips, agile and good for people with allergies. When they are shaved short, you can really appreciate how well built they are. Wonderful dogs.

What do you think good goals are for poodles? I have two standards now and I am thinking they present more like the lab in the video, wanting to work directly with you all the time.

Stonnie, do you have a way for a puppy to distinguish between work/training and play? For example, can you play tug of war and let them get "mouthy" during play without hindering progress in retrieving and obedience training?

My two silly dogs both cut their bads open on different occasions but they never showed any signs that anything had happened. I found out when I saw blood after our exercising was finished. I order boots for them, I hope they work!

Thank you so much for your insight. I've got 2 8 month female Pointerdors siblings that want to be sled dogs. I have to use a gentle leader to handle these pups. They go loving crazy for people and other dogs. Please tell me if my pups will eventually calm down. Doing more socialization and environmental stimuli and letting them be dogs. Recall is terrible. I love my girls. They sit stay and had no problem with gentle leader, it means fun and treats. Practice makes a good dog along with fun. I see you with these young pups on a leash with no problem. Do you ever have loving crazy pups?
