Hi, I just wanted to let you know that this video saved my life. I'm in theatre rehearsal right now and I'm stage managing for a show. We have to put grommets on some fabric and I had no idea how to do it. Me and my fellow company members watched 10 other videos, reread instructions a million times and cried. We have multiple eyelets absolutely destroyed from improper use. You're video was amazing. 10 out of 10. Amazing commentary. Very professional looking. And honestly thankyou. We spent two hours doing this after school in a high-school theatre shop for free. Thanks to you a rehearsal didn't go to waste. You're my hero I'm gonna subscribe for future tutorials. Love you. Xoxo. P.s Happy Valetnines Day ❤ Hope you have a great life 👍

This video should have more likes! This helped me a lot! It´s like for beginners, and I am new to these two items! It´s the only one I found online that explains the differences between eyelets and grommets and how to use them. Though I would have liked to see an actual eyelet being set as you did with the grommets. Well done and many thanks! 🙏🏾 You just got a new subscriber to your already many subscribers.

I've been trying to find the difference between grommets and eyelet for weeks. Thank you for the vocabulary. That's so clear in my mind now! Could you explain how to use a washer? Is it with a rolled rim or scored eyelet? Thank you.
@leatherpunk
@leatherpunk 2 жыл бұрын
It would use a rolled rim type barrel. You're not simply adding a washer to an eyelet, you purchase grommets as sets so that you have washers that fit exactly onto the barrels.

I recently found a box that had some eyelets and grommets inside! Now thanks to your video I konw the difference! thank you! some of the eyelets are scored.. they are tiny! the former owner also left an eyelet "plier" I guess it is called but maybe I dont know how to use it correctly or it doesn't really want to work on those eyelets.. and no anvil or tools for the grommets.. I hate to throw them out. I could use them. I am not sure how to get the right tool for these eyelets and grommet .. I guess look for a Tandy Leather shop? sounds like they will all need their own "sitting" tools since they are different sizes? The great thing about finding it is now I can think of so many things to use them for! Thanks again!
@leatherpunk
@leatherpunk Жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! Yes, you'll have to locate a matching anvil. If the eyelts exist, then an anvil for them also exists. Take accurate measurements of the flare and the barrel diameter and use that in your search. Another option to Tandy is Springfield Leather.

Very clear and helpful vid, thank you very much! I was searching on KZfaq for how to reinforce holes for new thread on a leather saxophone neckstrap that has no holes yet. Grommets will be the best for that given the fact that they are smooth on either side. Is it necessary to use a (wooden) mallet? Will steel damage the tools?

The mallet I use weighs less than 16 oz. The wooden hammer would be better than a metal hammer, but I would practice a few times first.

That last one you did just to show me how I'm doing it. I know it's wrong, that's why I'm here. Salt in the wound buddy. Like Nancy, I have a huge stash of rivets, eyelets, grommets, snaps, punches, anvils, setting tools and a pair of tools like you used in the wood, but the pin on mine is spring loaded and goes flat. any hints for that? The other part is the same as yours. I put it in a vice (vise?) to hold it. Thanks for the clarity!

I want to replace the hooks in my work boots with eyelets. What would you recommend that would last under the pressure of being tied up tight every day? I don't care how it looks, as long as it is functional.
@leatherpunk
@leatherpunk 4 жыл бұрын
A scored eyelet is probably the best for a boot lace, but the rolled rims will work too. In either case, as long as you have the correct size holes for the eyelets, they'll hold just fine. Removing the hooks without damaging the leather will be the hardest part. Practice inserting new eyelets on scraps before you work the boots.

Not sure how to set a grommet- does it matter which way round the washer goes (ones I saw are not flat) also is there any deviation to the setting method? I saw some people tilt the tool in a circular shape as they pound it.
@leatherpunk

You want the washer seated so the rim is downward. Yes, you can angle the setter as you go, it's just another way to make sure it's evenly set.

Where do you get the larger eyelets and grommets? I have Redwing work boots. They came with speed laces which I removed. The thickness of the leather is like two of the leather pieces you use in the demonstration. I would prefer grommets. I ordered a few kits but I dont really understand how they're measured. I keep getting grommets and eyelets that are too thin and too small in diameter. I have all kinds of punches but too small. On my old Redwing boots I used two eyelets per hole. So I would do the one then from the other side put an eyelet in and crimp it inside that one to hold it in place. Eventually they fall out. These new boots I bought are even thicker and the eyelets fall out after a day of use cause they're not anywhere close to making it through the leather.
