www.audioholics... - Bass management is a process used to digitally filter and extract bass from the speaker channels and redirect it to the subwoofer channel.
Why do we use Bass Management? Because it removes stress from speakers that can’t produce the bass and allows the subwoofer(s) that are designed to do just that. It also lowers distortion and increases system headroom while Improving bass response. In this video, Gene and Hugo discuss how to properly manage your bass.

This prompted me to go online to Paradigm to check out the specs of my old Studio 40s and 20s, and based on what I found, to override my Yamaha RX-A1030's YPAO having set them both as Large. After setting all my speakers to Small, I felt the lack of bass from my mains (I only have one sub), so I set my mains back to Large with their bass doubled by the sub - the "Extra Bass" setting, for a 50-80 Hz overlap. Sounds great. If you're using Yamaha's YPAO, go back into Manual after running it to set delay and EQ, and then (1) set it to "YPAO Flat" ("Natural" is a treble rolloff) (2) under Configuration, change the speaker sizes as discussed in this thread, and (3) turn on the test tone and then go into Levels, so you can tweak each speaker's level to sound the same, which is particularly important for the rears in a 7.1 setup, since the YPAO mike doesn't duplicate the pinnae of the ears' attenuation of sounds behind you - making it a good idea to boost the rears a db or two to "subjectively" match the other speaker's volume.

Very helpful video, as always. I ran the audyssey setup and it suggested that I set the cutover for my ceiling atmos speakers to 60Hz, all other speakers were set to 80Hz. I'm going to try setting them all to 80Hz this evening.

JK Saabh don't trust auto-eq to correctly set your bass management. If a speaker is placed near a boundary it will boost the bass frequencies and make auto-eq incorrectly think it's a large speaker.

FWIW - Apparently my taste / preference for bass management is different than everyone elses’. I have two SVS PB12+ subs. They’re nice subs and definitely sound better than the huge majority of the subs out there. But even though they’re nice subs, they still sound like subs (which I don’t care for). So I deliberately eq my main speakers to play as low as I can possibly get them to go. I then dial in the subs to fill in the rest of bass region below that. For me, that arrangement sounds better although I know I’m pushing my system amps really hard. It’s not as efficient and it’s hard on the equipment, but I like how it sounds better. It seems cleaner. A draw back to setting it up this way is that the system is more sensitive to the strength of the recorded bass signals and I’m constantly fiddling with the controls.

Great video and always good information, You talk about setting and how things should be done, could you do a walk through a receiver menu to show these setting, and what we should be looking for, I know where to set the size of the speakers and delays and so on, but changing the size of the speakers after running the EQ would that not cause things to not sound right? I want to say most of us depend on the MIC to calibrate the speakers,

it really is amazing how having the right settings with even marginal products can sound so much better than the wrong settings on super expensive hi-fi systems. Great topic on bass management, I have a 5.1 set up with (Paradigm Titan v.2) bookshelfs as my fronts, small paradigm cinema's in rear, hand me down pinnacle sub and mis matched Def Tech center. Having the crossover set to 80 hertz and speakers set to small mad a world of difference. Thanks! Side note of future video if possible: Im in a situation where my living room where we watch movies on 5.1 is also my dedicated 2 channel room and system. are there ways without taking out a small mortgage to get better 2 channel audio while maintaining the home theater - you know wife will only allow so much audio in the house...... @Audioholics
@Audioholics 9 жыл бұрын
Peter Schow Jensen Thx Peter. By headroom in regards to this discussion, I mean that redirecting the bass frequencies to a powered sub reduces the strain on the amplifiers in the AV receiver and the excursions on the speakers. This allows them to play more effortlessly without approaching their limits and distorting. More power and dynamics are now available.

I have been fighting this for a long time with my setup... I wanted to add that if you have bass reflex front. It really helps to set them to small and placement of those fronts becomes a heck of lot easier. That being said my subs are Boston acoustics micro90pv I use two of them. I think my next upgrade should be a better pair of subs where I can more fine tune with (phase ectra) It becomes super tricky when you want to get 2.0 aside from your 7.1. Quality. I figured out after experimenting what not that you have to compromise on one of them . I use Boston acoustics Lynnfield vr40,vr12,vr20 rears and the vrsPro di poles in my setup.

Boredom Ensues I agree that all surrounds should be overridden and set to small (don't know why YPAO called them large), but I found that setting the mains to small was not as good as setting them to large with the "extra bass" option for the sub to fill in the bottom two octaves, with a 50-80 Hz overlap.

Is it odd that I lose a lot of detail in the sound when I set my ELAC B6 Debuts at 80Hz crossover? I found that 90Hz is the sweet spot for them. 70Hz lost significant mids, while 100Hz sounded muddy. Is there an explanation for this? Right now I have F: 90Hz, S: 80Hz, C: 80Hz Sub: 120Hz. I'm just baffled by why that is happening with my ELACs. Would love your input if you ever have time. Thanks! Hello. I first found you guys while doing a search on Yahoo! for 'pc entertainment experience' then after comming across you found your link on your website to KZfaq. I'm having.. not problems.. but just not optimal performance from my 3 piece speaker system I have hooked up to my laptop via a headphone jack cable.. meaning ALL 3 speaks (sub woofer is that 3rd piece, no center channel speaker) are connected to my Toshiba laptop via one tiny headphone cable. I believe it's a 2.5mm headphone jack on my laptop. OK. Here comes story time. I had the problem of my bass working at first during a recent Windows 8.1 (full version 64 bit) install, BUT then NOT working right after I installed the Realtek HD audio driver. I somehow thought and assumed for over a week or so now, that I could not uninstall an audio driver like I could most any program because maybe it's part of the operating system. Well, guess what I did today? Just 30 mins ago or so, I found Realtek when going to Control Panel and then clicking on 'Uninstall a program' link. OK. So, after that, I tested out these same 3 piece CA speakers and it worked! Only after I got rid of Realtek did my bass and subwoofer function come back. So, check this out. What I have installed right now is Toshiba audio enhancement, DTS Inc/DTS Studio Sound., and that's it just those 2. What I have now is excellent for the lows (couldn't be better!) but not quite as good for the high frequency notes/sounds as having that Realtek installed. So, it has been a trade off. My ? is: is there a driver download that I can get from Dolby, THX, Conexant, or anyone else to have the best of both worlds and keep my subwoofer function while at the same time having that HD audio sound quality for the highs!?

Hi. What an excellent start to a series of videos! Thanks guys-really appreciated and long may it continue! I'm running a 4 tower surround system full range, but currently without a sub or center channel due to space limitations. I may wrongly be considering my towers as large bass speakers as the bass drivers are six inches (All speakers are Tannoy Sixes 611 Mark 2) I'm unsure if: 1. running the surrounds as small will facilitate better bass from the mains than I'm already hearing. Currently the mains and surrounds are set to large as each sub in each tower is 6 inches and produces good detail. I can switch this over to small easily on the yamaha RX V777 to experiment with levels. However, this is my main query... 2. Should I favour bi-amping instead of going for a (or pair of) sub(s). Although I have some floor space, sub placement may possibly end up being impractical for better results than bi-amping. If yes, I'm interested in running as horizontal bi-amp set up of independent level controls from the amps if possible to adjust bass on the av volume and mid and treble on the second amp. Or is this dumb and I should go a more conventional route of mains on the av amp and second amp to surrounds (or vice versa). Thanks in advance. 'Need more power cap'n!!'

I've tried setting my crossovers on 80hz numerous time, and it seems to take away some of the kick drum punch when I'm listening to music. Ninety hertz seems to work much better. The extra 10hz above 80hz going to my HSU VTF15H subwoofer adds a nice punch to the kick drums.

I'm not an expert, but my understanding is yes. Your Klipsch RP-280F's, though physically large, can't output bass (below 80hz) at the same volume a subwoofer can. You can, however, set the crossover of your RP-280F's and RP-450C to a lower crossover, say about 60Hz. I hope that helps.

Great stuff guys. So I have a bit of a Frankenstein set up in my home theatre. One thing I've been doing is passing the R/L front signals from my receiver through the dual JBL 10" subwoofers to the Infinity Primus P252 towers that I have. So now my right and lefts have a lot more bass. Should I still set my speakers to small at this point? Or are they considered Large, since I'm passing the signal through the subs. (I'm doing this per right and left, so it's still stereo) The actual LFE outs on my Denon go to a third sub behind the couch and a bass shaker installed in the couch itself.

I've been eyeballing the Yamaha S-501 integrated because it seems simple and highly rated (I prefer 2.0/2.1). Is this just a matter of playing with the crossover on the sub and the manual EQ settings? Love the videos!

Chris Guilfoyle The new S series integrated amps from Yamaha look like great products for the $$$. I believe the sub out is a simple pass thru on those units so you may still have to use the crossover in your powered sub.
@PureBlood42
@PureBlood42 Жыл бұрын
But isn't it true that by setting your large front tower speakers to "small" you're actually going to lose a frequency range? For example, with the powered subs set to say, 80 Hz and below and the tower woofers set to "small"...the towers with the woofers are no longer outputting sound to cover frequencies above 80 Hz. The tweeters and midrange drivers are certainly not going to cover that range either, so you'd be missing the upper low-end spectrum of sound by using "small" setting for front towers. If I'm wrong, please enlighten me.

Aaron Tyson You can set them large and still use a powered sub set to 80Hz but you may get too much overlapping bass in the crossover region. This is where a PEQ will be useful. I'm confused. Are you saying the receiver's crossover frequency from the front speakers to the sub should be set at 120 or 80? I assume, then, that the sub's low pass setting should be the same as whatever the receiver's crossover frequency is, right? (it's a 2.1)

Hey Gene, I have my Klipsch sub connected to a y splitter. My question is, is it better to connect the sub through the LFE line and set it up through the receiver?
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 8 жыл бұрын
+StevenSVT If your sub has an LFE input, don't bother with the Y-splitter. Simply connect the subout of your receiver into the LFE input of your sub.

@Audioholics
@Audioholics 7 жыл бұрын
LFE = low frequency effects channel (aka the .1 in a 5.1 or 7.1 system) ; LFE + Main means the subwoofer output gets LFE signal + bass from Main channels (even if set large) + summed bass from other speakers set small.

What are your thoughts on bass management for a tower that has built in subs? I've heard varying responses about whether to set to large or small. I have DefTech 8060's powered by a Denon x5200. Thanks for the help.

kylestrating I have sub powered towers myself and they should be set to small at an 80hz crossover on your receiver. The most important thing is to use the RCA line inputs to send the LFE's to them and to disable the towers subs internal crossovers since the receiver is doing the bass management.

How does this work in speakers that have powered subs, such as the Definitive Technology Mythos ST-L's? Would I be better off using the dedicated Lfe input on the speakers or running the LFE to separate subs?
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 9 жыл бұрын
isaacsykes3 You should set the speakers large and also connect the line level sub out to each towers LFE input. Set "LFE" on the bass management setting of your receiver instead of "both". This allows the speakers to play with their subs in 2CH mode and 5.1 mode without double bass problem. They should also have a built in HPF for the mids/tweets so you don't overdrive the top portion of the speaker.

Thanks, I connected the line sub out to the tower's LFE inputs. Unfortunately, the Sony receiver doesn't have a bass management setting that allows me to adjust the bass from the receiver..although the speakers themselves have their own crossovers. I will try to play around with that and see, how it sound. But thank you again for everything. You guys are awesome.

The Status Acoustics Titus would be a large, right? I don't have any need for a separate sub in my set up since they have 6 10" woofers per side.
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 9 жыл бұрын
Jacob Arnold LOL absolutely. No need to more subs. You can also try running them bi-amped with the 6 10"s running from the sub output which will give you level control if you need it.

The last time I had them hooked up, they were tri amped, but still using the passive network inside although I doubt it was doing much. I have a DEQx DAC/EQ thingy that sets it all up electronically. I am just doing it again in my new house and I may try to bypass the passive networks completely this time. It may not be worth it, but I figure I might as well try if I can figure out how to get inside these chambers.
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 9 жыл бұрын
Jacob Arnold If your processor allows LFE recombination to the main channels when you disable the sub channel, just use that setting and run your speakers fullrange. Though you may have to turn the LFE trim down -10dB for movies as I've found the gain to be too high in such a configuration like this. Also you can still utilize the passive network in your speakers and just bi-amp as I suggested before. Experiment with bass management settings and measure the output at the listening area to see how it integrates. Get a copy of REW (it's free) and a good mic and preamp so you can pull measurements.

But you gotta admit it's also part of the charm of watching these two guys interact, I mean, there are so many moments of unconfortable silence and cringe alongside all this amazing wealth of information they give, that one can't help but keep watching them! Yeah, they could get rid of the "Today I'm here with...", but they'd also have to get rid of the dad jokes, bad puns, awful pixelated images of aliens, etc., etc.,... So my advice is... embrace it, man! embrace these duo's way of doing things! Is it the most "modern" way of doing it? Maybe not, but they're having a great time and they continue to give out incredibly valuable information. Plus, I do appreciate their calmed, reiterative, pacient way of explaining stuff, I mean, I do not want this to turn into PewPiewDie or whatever that other guy's called. Keep it up!!! :D

Can you help me understand the advantage of setting the LFE crossover to 120, while setting the speaker crossovers to 80? My (uninformed) intuition would be that this would result in more output in the range of 80-120 Hz, since both the mains and the subs would be overlapping in this range? What is the advantage of this over setting both crossovers to 80?
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 6 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking, the LFE (0.1) channel bandwidth is up to 120Hz. So, ideally if your receiver has a separate setting for this, you'd want to set it to 120Hz so the info from 80-120Hz for the global 80Hz LPF doesn't truncate the rest of that signal.

+Kevin Swartz I asked this above, but don't want to wait forever for a response. Maybe you'll know: I'm confused about the 120 vs 80 Hz. Should I set my receiver's crossover from my front speakers to my sub at 120 or 80? It's a 2.1, by the way. Then should I set my sub's passover at the same? Or should that be 80 no matter what? It seems weird that the crossover would be higher than the low pass, because then i'd miss out on everything between 80 and 120. Thanks
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 8 жыл бұрын
+Jono Jono Set the speakers small with 80Hz HPF and 80Hz LPF on the sub. If your receiver has a separate setting for LFE, set that to 120Hz which is the max bandwidth of the LFE channel that gets summed with the bass from the other channels set small.
@jmrosenthal84
@jmrosenthal84 8 жыл бұрын
+Audioholics Thanks! I set the front cross to 80 and the sub to 80. I don't see anything specifically saying "LFE" but I do have a subwoofer level adjustment on the receiver that goes from -10 to +10. I'm guessing this is not what you're talking about, though.

Alaa Alsakka , if you don't have a subwoofer set your front tower speakers to large, then they will produce the base. If you have a subwoofer set your towers to small and the subwoofer will produce the base. You dont want your front towers and subwoofer both producing the base.
