From the Buddhist perspective, the question of having an altar at home or not is not a problem. If there is enough room in the house and the conditions allow then it's very good to have a altar or shrine. Most importantly is to have an image of the Buddha in our mind, keep the Buddha in our mind and act in line with the Buddha's teachings.
