How to set up a custom email domain on Microsoft 365 Family and Personal plans (formally Office 365)

Long gone are the days where you could purchase a domain name and use the free "Google Apps for your domain" or other services such as Zoho Mail to have your own free, reliable, custom email domain. - Today I go through the process of setting up a custom email domain on Microsoft's 365 Family plan (this also works on the Microsoft 365 Personal Plan too) and how you can share this with others.
I look at the process of purchasing and linking the domain from GoDaddy (which you must use for this process) and also demonstrate that you can manage your DNS records from GoDaddy too (it's not restricted to hidden MX records or restricting you to hosting a website on the same domain name on a GoDaddy web server or hosting plan).
I also talk about the benefits and other features that you get with the Microsoft 365 plans such as the 1TB of OneDrive storage for up to six members of your family/household.

I don't see the 'Personalised email address' section. I have an Office 365 Family plan yet it's not there. I have everything else except that.

Thank you for the video! Open question to anyone reading: Does anyone have seen lately/2022 the "'Personalized email address'" on the premium option (family plan.)? If you read below some people are complaining about not having this option anymore, .... Any confirmation will be appreciated. Note: Yes, I have GoDaddy. Thanks!

informative, thanks. 2 related questions. 1. is it possible to add two aliases that end up in one mailbox? 2. is there a catch-all concept for a family group with a custom domain? IE where emails to unknown addresses get out in the primary mailbox?

I already have a GoDaddy domain, but when I try to Validate the domain it says my domain is not set to correctly. I've called GoDaddy and HostGator (where my website is hosted) and they supposedly made the adjustments but it still won't validate. Thoughts?

Thanks for vid. Question for you though. How is it that you get around having to use GoDaddy for the Domain Registrar? For example I already have a domain registered with Network Solutions. I should not have to migrate my existing Domain over to another registrar in order to use that custom domain. Wonder if you and or any others have come across that and what it is that you did in order to work around that without of course having to go the route of buying a business version account instead of the Family version.

It can be made to sort of work with personal domains not hosted by go daddy. Add your address as an alias to your Microsoft account, add it to sync settings. Once set up you will receive emails from your personal email, but unfortunately you will not be able to send email. Using outlook on a PC this is not too bad as you can have both the 365 account and the imap linked to the account and you will have to make sure and reply to any emails using the Imap connection. It will also keep calendar and contacts synchronized. If you try and send email using the 365 account you will get an error message telling you you do not have permission to send from the account which suggests way to remedy the problem, but they do not work. Attempting to send also appear to block the 365 account for a number of hours before it starts working again (you need to reset the sync settings as well). I have tried for a long time to find a work around but failed and eventually moved to GoDaddy, which works very well and is very simple as shown in the excellent video.

Thanks for the video. I have a question. When i try to send an email from my new email.mydomain that i created with MS365 everything is fine but..,..when i take a look who send an email it says it was from hotmail/outlook account? Any help with that ?

Sorry for the late reply HM NEWORKS - You can actually set the "default from" address in the settings, you could also set the "Reply-To" address to match it in the Outlook settings if you wanted but I would recommend you use the "default from address" setting instead.

informative video. I have a question, what if I have set up the Microsoft family 365 and buy the domain at GoDaddy via Microsoft family 365, then I need additional Microsoft family 365, can I use the same domain that I bought earlier for 1st Microsoft family 365 ? would the setup be the same?

Once u create that 2nd account 'ruby' on that custom domain, does that person have full prviacy, ie. u can't access their mails?

Great video, very helpful. I've searched around and I can't really find an answer. Can you add multiple domains to this? I know you can in the business plan, but for the family plan can you have more than 1 custom domain?

no you can't. as this is for "family" if you need more domains a business subscription is the way to go.

Great vid, thank you very informative. Just have one step left and so have a question, I was with Google, custom domain and 5 family accs. I have a 365 family subscription and have followed your vid to setup personalised email. Have migrated the domain to Godaddy as the registrar. My DNS settings are still with my previous registrar, I can't find any details on what I should change the DNS settings to to have mail flow to MS? Would prefer to close my old registrar acc and have DNS & Domain with GoDaddy. Any advice.

Do you know who your old current domain registrar is? If you obtained the domain through Google directly then you'd need to speak to them to find out how to migrate it... for other domain registrars (such as NameCheap, Hover etc - it'll be as simple as logging into their control panel and using their "Transfer wizard" systems.

Thanks for the video. I have question though. What you did is only register a domain on godaddy without hosting right? Is hosting provided in m365 personal (exchange account)? If yes, is it possible to use google domain (without workspace) which is way cheaper than godaddy?

Hi Lukasz, unfortunately, the only way to use personalised domains with Microsoft 365 (Personal or Family Plans) is to purchase or use an existing GoDaddy purchased domain. You can however, if you use one of the Microsoft 365 business accounts you can use any domain register and Microsoft 365 will provide the correct and required DNS entries for your external DNS providers/domain registrar.

Yes, absolutely. That is the main difference between the Family/Personal plan and the Business plans :) I have also used the business plans and they are great too - you can also add email aliases too with the business plans and therefore another great benefit!

Great video, most helpful. I am looking to move my domain from Google to Microsoft. and use the 365 family account. My problem is that I have seven family members all with a current custom email (currently on Google) that I want to transfer across to MS 365. They don't all need all MS 365 features. Doesn't look like I can set up more than 6 custom email addresses with MS 365 family. Any ideas or other suggestions?

That is correct, as this is only a way for small group of people ("family") to have access to a personalized domain. is not intended to run a business with it. unfortunately if you have more than 6 people, you need to go straight to the Microsoft 365 for business. as the family plan limit is 6.

Is the 60 minutes to any country mobile and landline? If you do not have a number, what will show up on the caller ID?

Great video! I have a question: using a custom domain Outlook mailbox, could I sign into 3rd party mail clients (such as the Apple Mail app) with it. If so, what password would you need to use? Thanks!

Yes you can - You would use the full outlook.com email address and password that you linked your personalised email domain to - I hope this makes sense but if not, re-watch the video from the 10:00 minute mark to see how I "shared" the personalised domain to another account and how you would go about adding a personalised email address to an existing outlook email address - The important thing here to note is that you login with the original account details but you then receive emails to that account using the personalised email domain :)
