The problem with setting your blades to your outfeed table is it screws up the thicknessing accuracy. If the outfeed table is not adjustable it maybe possible to unbolt it and shim it out, but all accuracy radiates from the cutter block. Don't use the bubble of your level to check the two tables, you're not putting up a shelf, place your level or straight edge at one corner then check diagonally across the two tables or try winding sticks.

Thanks for a great video John. I have the Holzmann HOB 260NL, which looks to be identical to your Charnwood, and the manual is also rubbish. @4:13 you show how to adjust the infeed table to be coplanar with the outfeed table. However, I discovered a design flaw with these machines that prevents any coplanar adjustments. There are two pins pressed into the adjustment arms on the front that lock the infeed table in place. If you loosen the front adjustment bolts, the infeed table will not move because of the two pins. However, if you knock the pins out, then you have full adjustment of the table.

They are all generic Chinese manufactured and can be bought off alibaba cheaper if you fancy the risk, my manual was also terrible so after watching this will do some more fine tuning as I hadn’t figured out all the adjustments yet, thanks for the great video as always.

I have the world's smallest shop and I tend to do only small projects because of my physical difficulties. I also like preparing stock with planes whilst I still can, I’m a newbie and still find it satisfying, heck I find the fact I can now sharpen a plane satisfying. However, next year I’m planning on building myself a decent workbench and I think it might work out better to get a small planer thicknesser like the Titan from Screwfix. This video will be very useful when I finally take the plunge.

Glad it helped, they save a lot of work and time preparing stock. More importantly accurate and square stock. If you are struggling a bit it will help with the physical side allowing you more time to concentrate on the fine detail work.

John. Could you use the table saw to square the small edge instead of using the thicknesser on such a wide setting?

I have an Axminster that i think is the same as this one. I've used the jig that comes with it to set the blades but when I use the wood method with two lines 4mm apart to check the blades it moves the wood about 8mm. It moves the wood the same amount on both sides so the blades are parallel. Is this a problem? When the infeed table is set at 0 should the blades be on the same level or should it cut? Any help gratefully received. Thanks

Say I set the planer blades using the same magnetic tool that you used, and I notice my outfeed table is out of adjustment. How do I calculate how high it needs to be? I would need to first make the infeed and outfeed perfectly parallel, but the outfeed still needs to be at the right height.

I just picked up a second hand version of this machine (but it's orange) do you have any info on a pdf manual? I'm in Australia, mine didn't come with the setting tool for the blades, is there a storage on the machine where this is kept? Can't find any info on my model and there's no branding or product numbers to find replacement parts

Its a good machine for the money, I would prefer a helical cutter but that's more money again. Jebbs tools is where I got this. I think they have changed their name they are based in Cork

if you flip the board end to end as you joint it then you will be getting to the average thickness rather than taking too much off of one side. You will end up with a bit thicker board that is planed just by running the same end as the leading end.

I have taken pieces down to 5mm, if you are going to do that regularly you can make a jig to slide them through on to help support the piece.

Great video, just purchased one and yes the manual is rubbish, quick question, my fence is at 90 deg but it’s not perfectly in line with the table. So for example if I were to measure the width from the front left side to fence and then front right side to fence is would be about a cm out. Would this be a problem?
@JohnMcGrathManInShed

As long as it's 90 degrees to the table you should be fine

What was the total damage to your pocket book for that machine. I spent $5400 Canadian Kopecks on my Hammer A31. My machine came with a Spiral Cutter and a mobility base for that price.

€1200, it's a bit more entry-level compared to what Hammer make.
