Thank you very much for the kind words. do have one more clock video in the can but have not had the time edit it for upload. Editing such videos is about 3 to 4 times as much work as the work to shoot a good video. The last video still in the can is how to successfully drill and place new bushings for wore out pivot holes which is normally the death of must post WW2 clocks as professional rebuilds are almost cost prohibitive nowadays. However with the right simple clock repair tools, supplies, patience and practice it can be done for cheap, however not too practical for 99% of those that want an old clock working again. But for those 1%'ers like me it works and everyone else can try too but most will fail if they do try. Yes, bushing a clock is that hard without the professional $1000 tools. I think I did mine for under $70 in tools and lots of practice on an un-used area of the back clock panel (claim shell).

May 11, 2022. Hi Todd, I have been looking at my deceased husband's grandfather clock for seven years and for the past few days I wrestled with putting the drive chains back on and could not find 18-gauge wire. I found old telephone wire and used it to put on the center chain. So, now that the three chains are on, I am watching your setup grandfather video. I am hoping for the best. Thanks for the excellent video. I may have to watch it several times but Lord willing maybe this week it will be running again.

You sir are a master. I used your video to set up my grandfather in-law's grandfather clock (having zero clue of how do to so) and watching this video and the chain assembly video, which was the biggest pain in the ass, I was able to fully assemble the clock including getting the tick to a solid 60 bpm.We'll see if it holds. Thank you very much.
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 6 жыл бұрын
Glad to have helped. Did you lookup the 60 bpm as the correct number for your clock? If 60 is not correct for your click it will not keep correct time. However if that turns out you can just keep making manual adjustments to the pendulum screw until you get it to keep correct time, just takes many hours if not days to do it without knowing the number for your clock. Let me know how it works out.

Good to know. Yes, you will get to a point where you have to make small adjustments each weekend for a month then you will find it just changes a bit every weekend no matter the adjustment mostly do to temperature changes in the house over the week. When you're down to about 1 or 2 minute off each winding then just adjust the clock hands not the pendulum when you wind the clock.

Hi Todd, can you please tell me or produce a video on how to clean the brass weights and pendulum on the clocks?
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 5 жыл бұрын
Well most modern clocks after WWII are clear coated with a lacquer so just warm soap and water. If the lacquer has failed then you will have to clean it with acetone to get all the old lacquer off then buff it with brass cleaning compound until it shines. lacquer it again if you want it not to tarnish for a long time. Or buy new parts at time savers dot come.

You're pendulum is most likely out of beat as a result of the movement stopping, while the heavy pendulum continued. Move the pendulum almost all the way over to one side of the case, and then let it go. Hopefully that will set the beat.

Todd, thank you so much for that instructive video! A question here: I have an antique Colonial of Zeeland « Grandmother » clock from 1919, with tubes bells just like the Howard Miller you’re showing in your video. I was wondering how I can manage to find back that smooth sound of yours. I believe that the leather on the hammers had never been changed. But can it be the tubes that got a bit to low with time? They were thightly attached so I don’t understand why I can’t hear those fine harmonics instead of a quite metallic short sound. Can you think of a solution?
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 3 жыл бұрын
My tubes hang from cat cut but dental floss should work too. I changed the hammer leather on min and used a bit thinker leather I got from a shoe and belt repair shop and cut out myself. I have a video on that process which made the biggest difference to the sound. www.toddfun.com/2016/03/13/grandfather-clock-test-stand-and-hammer-refurbish/

Todd, I have a problem with my grandfather clock running. I checked the level and recently oiled the machine too. When given a push to the pendulum it runs for minutes and stops and sometime runs for hours and may be a day or two and stops. My clock is Ridgeway 114cm/60 (481-853 C SK). As in your part 4 video I checked up the pendulum movement and the tick-tock is not correct and the pendulum runs beyond the tock. As in your video my one does not have a crutch clutch adjustment and if I am to adjust the beat how should I adjust and what part of the clock? Please help me with your valuable advice.
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 7 жыл бұрын
I would need to see pictures and even then it might be hard. The crutch will have an adjustment like a clutch but if the crutch is just a bit of wire then you simply bend the crutch wire a little on one direction to make the correction. You can find my email on my about page in the show notes if you want to take photos.

If you can read the make and model numbers stamped on the back plate I might be able to help. Otherwise just let it run and if looses time raise the pendulum bob and if it gains time lower the pendulum bob. It will take a week or longer but once you get it spot on then take a reading of how many beats per hour and write it on the back of the clock or in a note book you keep in the clock.

Question regarding activation of gong and other things at top of the hour. My cuckoo clock is activating everything 2 minutes past the top of the hour. I noticed you mention to spin the minute hand on its rivet slightly. My clock does not have a rivet on the plastic minute hand. Is there an adjustment that can be made to dial in the activation of everything at top of hour? Thanks! Love your vids!
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 4 жыл бұрын
Darn I wouldn't know about a cuckoo clock. Strange it doesn't have a rivet. I guess it is a square hole that is in the minute hand. You might have to take it to a horologist to see if there is a cam with a set screw that can be tweaked a little or something but I wouldn't know. Maybe somebody else in the comments will replay.
@johnbrodehl9743
@johnbrodehl9743 3 жыл бұрын
First of all, it is a bushing, not a rivet. Antique cuckoos don't have the bushing. The hand is directly on the center shaft. It is possible that the movement has shifted in the case, causing the hand to be off. Other wise, the movement will need to be removed from the case to make the adjustment.

I don't know but you can always do it old school. Just get it close make small adjustments every, 15 minutes, hour, day until it takes a week to get off. At that point it will be at its best as these types of clocks will need a small adjustment once a week or once a month.

Todd, my problem is when the clock was 12:00 it only struck 6 times, so we are always short with 6 strikes on my grandfather clock. The rest of the clock works perfectly! Can you advise, how can I reset the clock ?

Move the minute hand to allow the clock to strike the hour. Move the hour hand to the number on the dial to however many chimes you hear (This sets the chime to the correct hour.)

Todd, I am attempting to fix a vintage Colonial Grandfather Clock for an elderly woman in my church at no charge. I have no clock experience to speak of, but I have enjoyed repairing a number of other vintage items. I was told that the clock was cleaned, oiled and serviced on regular basis by a professional clocksmith up to about 4 years ago when he passed away. The clock is running fast, gains about 1 hour every 24 hours. I applied your pendulum test using a blank piece of paper, the pendulum appears to be tick tock-ing at a balanced beat, however the pendulum has a slight wobble as it swings back and forth, Also the clock has a "second hand" display that seems to consistently jump ahead 2 or 3 seconds at the 20 second mark. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have photos and videos if that would help. thank you, Ed

Check to see if the pendulum spring is bent, cracked, broken partly or twisted in some way. You could have some bad gear issues or just about anything else really. This might require another Horologist expert in your area before you get too deep into it I'm afraid. www.google.com/search?q=grandfather+clock+pendulum+spring&rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS753US753&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZs8uHvPvYAhUr_4MKHSRgCnYQ_AUICygC&biw=1920&bih=974 If it's just the spring and you can get the make/model numbers off the back plate you can order a new one from: timesavers.com/

Nice work, thanks. Very personable presentation with good detail. Speaking for the content of the series, as I watched I felt that I was listening to a good mentor. Working on a tired grandfather clock from the 70's, I followed the cleaning, oiling and now working on getting the right beat. In the process of cleaning, I found a badly wallowed out pivot in the chime mechanism. I suppose I can live without Westminster chimes; but I'd like to see and follow your re-bush video when it comes!
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comments. I have the base tools and I'm practicing on re-bushing now. I think I have it down where others can follow simple instructions including the most inexpensive tools possible and instructions on how to order correct bushing and drills for the job. I just have to shoot the video on a practice click and then compile the instructions and links. Maybe before summer if all goes to plan.

Couldn't get the clock into beat. Ended up buying a new pallet from timesavers.com/ for $11. The old was bent a little and when I looked at the two side by side, I decided not to try to straighten the old one first. Since it is adjustable on my Hermle 451, I had to guess at proper orientation of the anvils (?). Now, the clock is in beat (lucky guess), next trying to see what I can do for the chiming.

The Wikipedia page on Westminster Quarters gives the tune in musical notation. It also has a Midi recording of the tune, so you can compare it to your own clock's quarters when aligning the musical drum. I always thought the quarters were just shortened versions of what's played on the hour, but not so. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westminster_Quarters

Hi if I put a quartz clock and I’d the ticks from my grandfather are the same as the quartz clock, is it in beat?

no, not guaranteed. The tick needs to be the same as the toc sounds on the clock.

My grandma's clock that i repaired works amazingly, just doesn't keep time very well. When adjusting the pendulum, with a week it'll either be 5 mins ahead or 5 mins behind. Should each tick-tock be 1 second apart, like a battery mech?
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 3 жыл бұрын
No a tick tock does not need to be 1 second. If it is off by 5 min in a week then just give the pendulum bob nut a little twist, up to run faster, down to run slower and then give it another week. If it is always off it could just be the quality of the clock or some age to the moving parts showing.

These antique American clocks were typically only accurate within 5 minutes a week. It will gain time at first, then even out, then lose time. Adjust the pendulum to find a happy medium.

No, I'm not an expert. The clock belonged to my mother in law, after she moved se put it on the ground and stay for years without working then she give it to jewellery store guy to repair it and put the clock in our house but he couldn't make it work so I took over.
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 6 жыл бұрын
Classical example. Thanks. People know to remove the pendulum and weights when moving a clock and many times the pendulum gets separated from the clock as it is moved around. Then when somebody like a "jewelry store" gets the clock to repair they order a replacement pendulum that isn't the correct length thinking all grandfather clock pendulums must be the same. Sometimes weights are replaced incorrectly in the same way. Lets start with taking out the clock mechanism and reading all the numbers off the back plate. We might get a model number that I can use to lookup the correct weights and pendulum length. Assuming there are no other incorrect parts, missing parts or worn out parts we might be able to figure something out quick. If not, then it would get expensive to track down the problem at which time you might consider taking it to a Horologist in area to get a professional evaluation or just put the money directly into a known working clock.

Are you sure it’s not as simple as the silence switch is engaged? Most such clocks have a lever on the right side of the face plate to switch on silent mode which just stops the gears for the left and right weights but lets the center time gears and weight to move.

Thank you so much for creating these amazing videos! I have been given a grandfather clock that my great grandfather built, so it's been amazing to have it running again! Do you have any tips on how to get the hour to chime on the hour and not a minute past? Each other chime line up perfectly with no issues. It is just the hour that is slightly off. This is the first time it has been running in over 40 years.
@ToddFun
@ToddFun 2 ай бұрын
normally the hour hand is just press fit. When it chimes take off the minute hand and pull off the hour hand and press it back on on the hour. if it’s the minute hand that is off take it off and use a pliers to gently turn the nut on the back of the minute hand to correct pointer. the nut is normal pressed into a rotatable bracket if some pressure is used with a pliers. but if you say it’s ok pointing at 15,30,45 the that process will mess things up.

I understand and I may just leave it then. It is the minute hand that is a minute past before it chimes the full hour. Your videos have been a great help! I'm working on cleaning up and setting up a second movement that needs some care. This has been so fun and rewarding to do.
