Its better to place the rock first! Also its not a bad idea to place a mat under just in case members of the CUC are burrows. So, if a rock shift then it doesn't impact on glass. Which is why I think you laid the sand first. But, it is more than likely to shift if there is burrows in either case. Now you could use that proxy like material to make it permanent so it doesn't move but the down side its allot harder to change later if you don't like it or want to change the look. Then after it's done the sand goes down. Now, one of the points you made on the sand it's necessarily true. You rather have the sand even. In the 70's it was to build up the back so that the food would settle in the lower levels. That didn't really work out so it was a myth sales guys said at the time. As far as the layout, no, I didn't like it for myself. I normally do two islands: large, small and medium. This way I can place different corals so they will not be close enough to sting another one. Hard to do in a small Aquarium.

Shouldn't you always place rock first, and make it solid and stable, and then add sand? That way any digging fish or inverts don't topple the rock and cause disaster?

Not only bc of fish, you get some nutrient pockets in the sand under the rocks too and in a mini system like this, not bueno...

kickasssloth360 Well I guess I won’t leave my comments since you kind of covered it LOL. My concern would be inverts or gobies digging up underneath and getting crushed or toppling something over as well as the nutrient pockets. Otherwise think the scape looks great

Puttings shims on the back of the cabinet will put a lot of weight on that side and could stress the cabinet. If i have to level a cabinet, i put a thick wooden shelf on the floor first, level that with shims, and then put the cabinet on the shelf.

I thought that the general rule was 1 pound of live rock per gallon of water. Having said that, 30 pounds of rock in a 30 gallon tank was too much. I used maybe 20 pounds and it seems crowded. I thought the live rock was an essential part of biological filtration. It's been up and running for a year now with fish only and water parameters are perfect. I want to add corals and remove some live rock. Any thoughts on this?

Late subscriber here, watching all the Nano vids backwards of course lol. Question, does the #lbs/gallon of rock "rule" not apply on smaller tanks? I want to setup a 30g and want enough Rock for beneficial bacteria without putting 30lbs of rock (likely blocking too many areas?) But it is also not a plumbed or AIO tank unfortunately, so with less Rock I'd be relying on solely sand and filter media (unless there's a product/way to convert to an AIO? where I can stash more bio media) I guess that's 2 questions. Thanks!
@ReefBuildersVideo
@ReefBuildersVideo 2 жыл бұрын
The bacteria doesn’t really need your help too much. Just create the aqua scape you want and just don’t over pack with fish and you should be good.

Nice aquascape. When I added snails after hours of precise architectural aquascape, all my hard efforts got wrecked because that one snail decided to push the rock over... Sad life.

Nice setup, but whyyyy Jake did you put the rocks on the sand?? I thought you would show the correct way setting a tank like that up.
@ReefBuildersVideo
@ReefBuildersVideo 4 жыл бұрын
I think there's a case to be made for both methods - in smaller tanks with small rocks it doesn't matter as much, but I just don't want to bury too much of the rock. In larger tanks you definitely would prefer to have contact between the rock and the bottom of the tank.

Why is it so important to level the aquarium so perfectly on the floor? What would happen if it was leaning to the back a tiny bit? Serious question :)
@ReefBuildersVideo
@ReefBuildersVideo 4 жыл бұрын
A tiny bit is not that critical, and better for it to lean back so water flows towards the filter than leaning forward, high up on the aquairum glass. But the larger the tank, the more important it is to get it perfectly level to distribute the load and stresses
