Nice little series, Jake. You mention that you're going to put corals in next video? Will you be using some bacteria in a bottle to seed the aquarium? Will you be going over cycling an aquarium? I think this is an important step a lot of new hobbyists do not take enough time with, which sets many up for failure.

I keep my salt pre-measured for 5 gallon buckets in air tight food containers. images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81y9YUousKL._SL1500_.jpg When I need to add 5 gallons to the holding tank in the garage, I just grab one of the air tight containers and dump it in. I also have a heater and chiller on the brute can in the garage as temperature swings. And of course a pump to mix. Then when I'm ready for a water change its already, ready to go. The brute can is plumbed and raised enough to stick a 5 gallon bucket underneath, then I just turn the ball valve to fill the bucket.

I’d be more inclined to use those pre measured bags if it wasn’t wrapped in single used plastic. That’s a shame. A bucket of salt is more environmentally friendly.
@3rdstoneinteractive
@3rdstoneinteractive 4 жыл бұрын
There is a lot more plastic in that bucket than in the 5-gallon bag. Besides, the bag is easier to recycle.

Kourtney Young depends on the plastic not all single use plastic is recyclable and a bucket is. Plus you generally don’t see buckets wrapped around fences and trees and around animal life.

@@3rdstoneinteractive you're forgetting the plastic bucket is infinitely reusable. Plastic bag becomes garbage once it's used.

Great question; due to evaporation and two-part dosing, the usual trend is for salinity to creep upwards, almost never downwards. I specifically aim for 33ppt to give some wiggle room when evaporation creeps the salinity up to 35ppt. It's much better to undershoot salinity a little bit than to overshoot it. As this is a beginner series, I'm trying to keep it as succinct and to the point as possible.

@johnVidBozo
@johnVidBozo 4 жыл бұрын
I usually like your videos. Were you extremely rushed when you made this one? Several times you make the point to measure salinity accurately but then don't talk about the correct values. "Double and triple check" the values and then you totally skip the way low value of 30.5 ppt. Even your desired value of 33 ppt is way low. For all the new reefers out there, the value should be 35 ppt or a specific gravity of 1.026. Jake's "a few points one way or the other" is NOT correct.

This whole series just seems like it's for his sponsorship with Red Sea. Couldn't imagine giving misinformation to new reefers and calling it good enough.

@@ReefBuildersVideo I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Maintaining the correct salinity is maintaining the correct salinity. It would take quite some time to raise salinity 4.5 ppt by adding two part. Much easier to start correctly and test and adjust as needed over a much smaller range. A very slight adjustment to W/C salinity would take care of two part creep. I guess my biggest issue is the disingenuous statements about making sure you test accurately, calibrate tools and then just shoot from the hip for the final value. This works for experienced aquarists but is a real shaky way to start for a rookie.
