I was once told by a man who ran 6000 sheep that most of our time is spent filling the chute. Therefore, he argued, you want your chute to hold as many sheep as possible. The problem is how do you have a really long chute in a relatively small space? When I saw a dual lead up chute in action on a sheep dairy in New Zealand I knew I just saw the answer. The extra chute takes up very little room and compacts the chute space. It also improves sheep flow into the system.
In this video we are going to take a tour of a handling system to talk about what features help improve the flow of sheep through the system. This handling system is portable, so it can be moved and set up anywhere the sheep are, which greatly improves sheep care in regenerative ag systems where sheep might be grazing far from the homestead. This system is made of galvanized steel for durability. You can also buy handling systems made of aluminum that are a lot lighter and faster to set up. I chose steel because I work a lot of rams through my system, and they tend to be hard on the equipment. I also realized I was likely to hire some help to move and set up my system, so I wanted the panels to be durable enough to take some abuse. I have seen this same system that was 20 years old and still looked like new. Note that I have cement under the single file chute and a 'sidewalk' that I can walk on. Our soil has a lot of clay and boot sucking mud can really wear a person out. The cement has been a great addition. If you have any questions just ask below. I can take added photos to demonstrate anything you might wish to see.

How do you handle your livestock? Did you notice anything similar with a system you may already use?

It's only 2.3 acer. There were horses on it at one time. They put in a round pen, right now the rams are in it. I'm building a holding pen off one side with a shoot to funnel sheep to a channel gate into round pen or to pasture and work station I divided the property into two paddocks one in front of the house and one in back of the barn with a small strip that has our garden, and chicken coops for family space between house and the barn. Thinking of making the paddocks into fourths and trying intense grazing. This is all new as I'm a carpenter by trade. Of course we got sheep and goats before we thought out a good plan. The cart before the horse thing. We live in the pan handle of north Idaho hour south of the border. We get temps down to 0-f and two feet of snow that stays most of the winter with hot dry summers. Looking into over seeding paddocks and not knowing if I should wait till spring and frost seed or over seed this fall when tems drop down to 65. I looked at nature seed they have a sheep blend that sounds good, price is on the high side when looking into seed. I want whats best for them as we are trying to build a good stock, another side of the of ranching knowing what to look for in your livestock and bread them to get the results for fiber and body structure.

@@anthonypayne6032 what is in your pasture now? Frost seeding legumes can work well, but grasses are more difficult.

Love the vid well done. We are have picked up seven Jacob sheep and are in a real learning curve. I'm building a farm with no capital, it's slow going. we have never had live stock so a lot reading watching. KZfaq is full of poor information trying to pick out good from poor and put into practice without a mentor has been a ride. I like how your presentation with over head shots help me on layout. we only have been at this for a few months and of course jumped in with no clue. pasture is my next thing of whats best mix for my over seed.

Tell me more about your pasture, where you are located etc. There is a LOT you can do just by grazing management.

Thank you so much for this video! We are 2 years in on our sheep farming and are ready to purchase a corralling system. We’ve been using an old pig pen, various gates, and old cattle panels to corral them. Kind of looks like the Clampetts if they were to start sheep farming. 🤣 This was very informative. Thanks again!

Helpful! I am just starting to design my system (and it has to be affordable) as I currently have 15 ewes. I want to be able to start small and expand as the flock grows. love the double chute concept!

Start with your basic single file chute and scale and a few gates to make a pen, and then just keep adding parts as you grow. This is my fourth rebuild. I went with cheaper materials previously but found they rusted or rotted quickly. The galvanized steel is a worth while investment.

Awesome video. I've seen dual leadup alleys used for cattle, but not sheep. Great idea. Where did your galvanized equipment come from? It looks like D&S, but I wasn't sure.

Definitely recommend going with galvanized rather than painted as galvanized will last a lifetime, painted maybe only a decade. The system shown in the video came from Premier1.

The border collie works in three areas. It gathers sheep and moves them out of the catch pen, they also move them out of the holding pen and push them up the chute.
