@@nakedsnake_ It does on low-end stuff, because for example mid-tier Intel mobile CPUs essentially "emulate" core isolation, by simply 'double-checking' that processes aren't accessing restricted memory after reads are executed. It results in pipeline stalling whilst side-channel mitigations are run against instructions that have already executed. Whereas higher end, newer, and I think all AMD Ryzen do this on-access directly in the silicon logic itself.

Games like Control and God of War run stable 60 and you can run eSports titles it while getting full advantage of 165Hz screen. One more tip is before you actually connect to the internet and update the drivers, you might want to save the system image file using a software called macrium reflect and store it safely on a drive. I had watched videos and read on forums that if your laptop starts to feel slower to you after years, because of newer drivers which slow down the system you can reverse back your laptop to the exact state it was in to factory default, this is better than just regular factory reset of windows on your laptop ✨

The last 2 gaming laptops I’ve bought needed a wipe before steam games would launch properly. No idea why, I tried many different things to fix that issue but a PC reset always worked. Takes about an extra 30 minutes to set up like that but it’s very worth it imo.

This channel was a big help for me finding a new gaming laptop this year. I've been out of the laptop space for many years and was having trouble making a choice and understanding the performance results I kept seeing. Eventually decided on a Legion 5i Pro and a Steakdeck instead of the Legion 7i or Razer Blade 14 I was originally going to get. The 5i Pro has just enough of what I want that I can complement it with the Steam Deck for the same price as the more premium products, without sacrificing performance where it matters to me.

Love the tips! Set up so many PCs and Laptops over the years that all of these tips became second nature to me and I'm sure you get me when I say it's crazy how efficient one gets at doing all of this stuff when it's you're in the 100s of time setting up a system from stock/first boot. I'm wondering though, do you not suggest/use anything similar to "Shutup10"? Windows has soooooo much bloat compared to Linux for example. Nowadays it's one of the first things I do. I just hit actions and click "apply recommended settings only" as those are simply telemetry services and none essential services that 99.9% of people do not and will never need. Probably doesn't make a huge difference but I have noticed improved boot times, and obviously precious system resources are freed up! Mainly I've noticed that systems stay fresh and snappy much longer, thus resulting in the need for a fresh install as windows based devices usually end up needing after a year or two of cluttering up. I see it suggested a lot in tech/hardware discords etc, never had an issue or any bugs arising from it except windows updates reverting the settings changed by it. Takes 20 secs to set them again though as it's literally 3 mouse clicks in total. Just wondering if you use it on personal rigs and would recommend it at all, or if you have any real thoughts on it or similar software.

I have been watching your videos for the past 4 years or so and I finally put this knowledge to work choosing the right gaming laptop for a friend. I have done all of the things you have mentioned in this video but still I am concerned about battery. To get the most performance you want the laptop to be plugged in but at the same time keeping the battery at 100% for too long may reduce its life in the long term. Any suggestion about that? I read about software to limit the charge but ultimately I just left it as it was. Anyway, the laptop is an HP Victus with a 5800H, 16Gb of ram, 1 Tb SSD, RTX 3060 and a 144hz 100% sRGB 300 nits screen. Got it for €1099 after a long time of searching for the best bang for the buck. I must thank you because I have learned a lot from your videos and the amount of detailed information you put in every review is super useful. Great job.

Some laptops like Lenovo/ASUS let you set the max charge level to 70-80% or so, not sure of a way to do that in Windows though. I ran a work laptop on 24/7 at 100% and after 3.5 years the battery was still fine, though this is of course anecdotal and just one instance.

Super guide. I just got a couple Black Friday buys, a Legion 5 (6800H/3070ti) for me and an Ideapad Gaming 3 (12500H/3050ti) for my gf. While I was right on with the upgrading of storage and RAM (as per your earlier vids on this pair) it's always good to have a reminder of what to do to optimise the whole process, especially as my last brand new laptop setting up was a few years ago. Might just be me but my mind tends to be more like a sieve when it comes to the minutiae of software etc (nm no formal education with PC's, just messing about trial and error discovery lol) while doing stuff with physical hardware is so easy. As for the above upgrades, the Legion got a 2Tb 980 Pro in the spare slot (to match the OEM 980 Pro it came with and keeping it in line with my desktop's 3.5Tb of the same) and the Ideapad got the RAM upgrade from your vid, the 2242 slot changed to boot with a 512Gb Sabrent Rocket drive and a 1Tb 980 in the 2280 slot replacing the more anemic Intel 660P. Just doing the game installs and data transfers now and we're good to go.

Another great review! Kudos for vouching for Windows Defender - as a "not so ordinary user" I completely agree that it became pretty good in the last few years (especially if one's playing fair and doesn't try to get f.e. games "for free" on torrents). As to the setup itself - I wish it would be that easy process for software developers :) It can easily take at least few days until everything is set up as it should be in our realm :) BTW I've used Chrome on my previous machine, but on my brand-new Lenovo Legion 7i I've decided to give Edge a try - now I know that technically it's pretty much the same browser under the hood since it's built upon Chromium engine, yet it does include some interesting features like putting unused tabs into a "sleep mode" when they don't really consume a lot of CPU and RAM (if at all) - after a month of using Edge in Windows 11 I don't have a need nor desire to install Chrome (mind you, I was using it for like 14 years or so).

I'm not sure if you already reviewed this yet, I know you did a piece on cooling pads for gaming laptops, but I've been using the IETS GT500 and well, it's a beast. My Lenovo Legion 5 17.3 inch already has a good heat displacement system. Games like Elden Ring on all max settings on a normal cheap pad run between 68-73C according to MSI Afterburner monitoring, which is very respectable. However, with this pad, which runs up to 5,000 RPMs at about 40% power drops my thermals to about 56-62C. It also includes a cleanable dust filter which drastically reduces the need to open the panel for cleaning. The downside is it can be a bit loud, running up to 55db at max power but I never needed anything close to that. I feel as though this pad, although a bit pricy at $70, can make a substantial difference in the life span of gaming laptops and I'd be very interested in your thoughts on this device, as I know you are a supporter of cooling systems. There are also some models that include additional USB ports and RGB lightning, and as we all know by now from your reviews, RGB has a major impact on performance.
@THEDARKILLERS46
@THEDARKILLERS46 Жыл бұрын
CPUs and GPUs are made to work perfectly at temps up to 100°C (115 in some cases), they litterally could run at those temperatures 24/7 and it wouldn't make a difference, but even then manufacturers are really conservative with the temps they allow (it's been criticized in a lot of occasions) because the one thing they absolutely don't want is for your computer to melt on your lap or to spark under normal usage. That's why thermal throttling exists. The only valid reason to worry about temps is if you overclock the heck out of the components, or game with the laptop on your lap, then I would advise to buy a 70bucks desk instead of a cooling pad that will effectively make your experience worse by being another thing to carry around. Anyway, temperatures have not been a concern for many years now, 73C is plenty of headroom, you just don't need a cooling add-on except if you are really concerned about noise, in this case a better solution would be to buy a 70bucks headset. This is really not something to worry about

@RAW_Reality
@RAW_Reality Жыл бұрын
Wait, what? You do realize that this makes no sense, right? There's no such thing as a "sweet spot" when it comes to setting your screen's refresh rate lower than it's rated for. Are you trying to haul dirt with a Ferrari too? If you're trying to limit your screen (Ferrari) to accommodate for the speed of the game (dirt), that's effectively what you're asking for. Aside from some slight overshoot of the colors in having a faster monitor, there's no downside to having that overhead. And if removing that overshoot is the goal, I still wouldn't suggest lowering it "to the speed of your games". 144hrz, at least.

11:34 - Important Note: If you plan on doing a clean install of Windows 11 make sure that you have a USB with the WiFi - adapter drivers installers for your laptop manufacturer as gaming laptops with have adopters that Windows 11 can't use until you copy over the driver installs and install them through the installer. Then you need to perform a restart and with the WiFi adapter drivers installed and working you will be able to connect the internet and get all the other important drivers/updates and programs. You do NOT need an internet connection to setup Windows 11 and, regarding creating a local account instead of being forced to create an online Microsoft account, there are two methods that aren't terribly hard that work currently (Microsoft hasn't countered them yet). This also is important if you want to save a completely clean system image prior to connecting to the internet and doing any updates, such that you have the ability to restore the laptop to true factory state or if you want to use the laptop without internet. I'm going to detail these methods below and will be overly-detailed to help those not as familiar with PC processes/menu systems. Both methods begin with the same initial steps: 1. During the initial Windows 11 setup where it wants to connect you to the internet and the screen you are on says "Let's connect you to a network", press Shift+F10 to bring up the command prompt. 2. Use your mouse to click inside the command prompt on the command so that you can type. (This didn't used to be the case, but it is now.) 3. Choose one of the two methods from here: Method One (a) 4a. In the command prompt type: taskmgr 5a. Press enter to bring up the restricted task manager window. 6a. At the bottom-left of this window click on "More Details" which will bring up the full task manager window. 7a. Scroll down to find "Network Connection Flow", click on it to highlight it, then click on "End Task" on the bottom-right of the task manager window. 8a. You'll see things happening in the background and the "Let's Connect You To The Internet" screen will change to the "Who's Going To Use This Device?" screen. 9a. Close the task manager window and the command prompt window by clicking the "x" on the top-right of their windows. 10a. Continue setup by making a local account on the computer. Method Two (b): 4b. In the command prompt type: oobe\bypassnro 5b. Press enter. The computer will restart and bring you back to the beginning of WIndows 11 Setup with "Is this the right country or region". 6b. Continue setup normally until you again reach the "Let's connect you to a network" screen but this time at the bottom-right you will see the option "I don't have internet". 7b. Click on "I don't have internet", which will take you to a screen that says "Connect now to quickly get started on your device" at the top and on the bottom-right you will see "continue with limited setup". 8b. Click on "continue with limited setup", which will take you to the "Who's going to use this device" screen. 9b. Continue setup by making a local account on the computer. Now, you can create a system image of the true factory state. I do this by connecting an external storage drive that has the install file for the free version of Macrium Reflect on it, transferring the install file to the new computer and installing it, then running it to create the system image on the external storage drive. Then you can connect to the internet, update Windows/drivers/etc. and create system images as desired during the update process. There are tutorials out there on youtube for Macrium Reflect use, so I am not going to go through those here. Jarrod, the above process could be good video content for you, as well as how to use Macrium Reflect to make backups. I hope this is helpful to someone!

For the wifi connection part there is 2 ways to skip it if you are far awar from any LAN cable source. ~ As soon you reach the wifi page, there is 2 scenario Scenario 1 1. On the wifi page, press Shift + F10 ( some laptop need hold or lock FN then Shift + F10 ), an command prompt page will pop out. 2. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to bring out a task manager 3. If the task manager that appears Looks like Windows 10 Task manager ( all processes highlighter bar coloured sligthly yellowish ), just hit TAB and press N or scroll down the process page and find NETWORK CONNECTION FLOW, terminate the process. 4. The Wifi page will skip to Local User Page Scenario 2 1. Repeat same process as scenario one, but instead of the classic Yellow highlighted Task Manager like windows 10, you be greeted with the new Windows 11 22H2 Task Manager with blue highlighted bar instead in the processes. If this the case, alt + tab or open back the command prompt page. 2. Type oobe\bypassnro , do this, the laptop or desktop will restart immediately. 3. Once restart, you back at the first setup, go through, you will be greeted again with wifi page, redo the same step 4. After open the new task manager, find the NETWORK CONNECTION FLOW and kill the process. ( The reason on 1st step cant be done because you wont be able to kill the process or find it for unknown reason maybe because microsoft wants to force you login with microsoft account )

@@punitarora8664 I'm not sure but if you look up your processor and "under clock" or "undervolt" you may be able to find some ways to reduce power draw and heat

It's a little expensive with $40 but I would absolutely recommend buying NTLite and creating a custom windows ISO using their gaming preset. It cuts out most of the junk but not to the point where you're missing dependencies for apps and games you'll be using.

Maybe two things to add: If you can afford a gaming laptop you can probably spare $40 and obviously NTLite is heavy customizable if you know what you're doing. But if you don't, you can simply use their presets and still create a really solid and bloat free ISO.
