We have been working on a series of videos to help answer some of the questions that I field all the time via email, facebook, etc. By far, the question of "how do I setup my boat to get a wave like in the videos" is the most asked question. In this 4 part series I intend to give you the answer.

I'm going to try the clinometer idea and focusing on weight, pitch and roll with max surf tab and neutral center plate. I have a 2017 Nautique GS22 with extra bags in the rear lockers, and man I am having the hardest time to get a longer, pushy wave. I'm 6'1" 250lbs using a couple different boards (Ronix Koal Technora Powerfish+ 5' 3", and a Ronix Flyweight Conductor 5'), and the only place I can get push or "find the pocket" is literally a board's length from the swim platform - the very beginning of the wave. There is no room to play around at all. My wife and kids (all less than 200lbs, using a 5'4" Liquid Force Rocket) have nearly the same issue. They can get a couple of feet further back, but that's about it. Wave seems quite steep as well. The default surf settings on the GS22 are horrible it seems. We've been playing around with all the factors - speed, ballast weight, weight distribution, NSS, NCRS -- and it's a freaking nightmare. Speed 80% of our time out on the water just messing around with settings - hoping to finally find that magical number that lets us have a decent wave. By the time we are all totally wiped out, we still haven't made any real progress and have to try again the next outing. Love surfing, but this kindof sucks. :( Really beginning to think we purchased the wrong boat lol. I am praying your advice will help me out. Do you have any suggestions for me?

GREAT videos! For those of us who are newer to wake surfing, this info is great. Seriously looking forward to seeing your future episode on what makes a great wave. For those of us who don't have much experience, being shown what a great wave looks like would be very helpful. Clean face, steepness, length, etc. may seem intuitive, but seeing examples would be awesome! Keep up the great work and stay safe!

that is great. Keep in mind that those older enzos make a great wave on the regular side, and much harder to make on the goofy side. If that doesn't matter to you, no problem, just a heads up. Send me the link, I will watch it.

Thank you so much for this video. It has helped us immensely and now I'm working on dialing things in. I am completely sold on the clinometer to dial things in, but do you calibrate it on a completely flat level surface or do you calibrate it while on the boat? If on the boat, do you calibrate it without ballast on the boat? Guessing you calibrate on a flat level surface, but unsure. Thanks again!

I would assume its when you are underway as that’s when you get the actual pitch and roll created by the gates, tabs, wedges or whatever system you are using

I've been watching your videos for years now and have noticed yall almost never surf behind or talk about MasterCraft. I love the wake behind my '18 X22 and often surf behind a '19 xt25 and the wakes are great but never can compare them to any other modern wake boats. just wondering how they match up against other top dogs in the surf industry thanks.

In the past, the MC boats just haven't done as well as other brands when it comes to wakesurfing, but they always seem to have had 1-2 boats that surfed really well. We have invited them in the past to some of our events, but they don't always like to play. ;-)

Having read the replies below, I have an '06 X-30 with piggy back bags and a Go Surf Assist system. It creates a fantastic wave. It is just about figuring out what works best on your boat. GSA was a vast improvement and changed our boat from a listing queen to riders switching sides on the fly.

That is helpful. I have an older boat (supra). I like the idea of using the phone to get pitch and roll and trying to recreate that each session, but it would be nice to do that with an aftermarket sensor installed on the centerline of the hull or deck and gauge that goes in the dash. Does that exist? I guess what I am asking is the availability of an aftermarket retrofit auto-wake like system for older boats. Anyone doing that?
@wake9tv
@wake9tv 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know of an additional sensor, and yes, it would be great. I haven't looked recently. It would be very expensive to create a system like that for boats, and then difficult to make it a universal installation.
@jensers11
@jensers11 4 жыл бұрын
wake9.com I’m sure it would be. I have an older boat that puts out a great wave for us, but it takes some fiddling. What is the cost of convenience? $150K when I own a $30K boat now that is working great and there is nothing wrong with... I could spend a whole lota money to introduce automation into an older boat and still be money ahead. Idk - I’m cheap tho, so...

Use the Clinometer to fine tune your boat. Use lead, use a suction add on wedge and move people around to fine tune your wake. Once you know your numbers to capture you best wave - you now have a new baseline even when you have more people, different conditions etc. “You are the autowave young skywalker “

Do think think your pitch, roll, and draft numbers work well for older boats that have to be listed (like your Tige)?
@wake9tv
@wake9tv 3 жыл бұрын
no, listed boats need much more roll, from 10 to 20 degrees. Pitch may be similar, depends on the model.

So I have a 2019 Axis T23 with no sensors on pitch/roll/draft. Am I dead in the water on finding a consistent wave or are you suggesting that when I find a good wave that I like to measure it against the clinometer?
@wake9tv
@wake9tv 4 жыл бұрын
You’re not dead in the water, that is why I show you how to use the Clinometer app. It’s not as easy as it is on my boat but you can still measure pitch and roll and draft and then know how to reproduce the wave the next time you come out. You just have to match those values.

Also go to Axis forums and see how others have weighed their boats as a starting point. I have an Axis t-23 2016 - I have Plug-n-Plays in the back, 600#’s in the bow, and I move 400#’s of lead around to fine tune the wave. It puts out an awesome wave. My buddy likes it with full wedge (increase in pitch, short and tall wave lots of push) and I prefer no wedge (less pitch and longer wave - still plenty of push). Bottom line - watch as many wake 9 videos about set up. Put as much weight in that boat as you can afford. Take it out and play with the wave - not just surfing - but play with the wave. Good Luck. BTW - no sensors and no computers can be a good thing when a boat gets over 5 years old.

What would you think would be the best boat I could buy for surfing under the $30k price range
@wake9tv
@wake9tv 3 жыл бұрын
find an early 2000s hull like: supra 22 or 24ssv, Tige 22 or 24v, malibu 23 or 24lsv, centurion avalanche, centurion enzo 230 or 240. You will have to look for a good deal, and then probably have to do a lot of work to setup surf system/ballast. But those hulls make good waves and it would be a lot of fun if you were a builder/tinkerer.
