Hey friends - in today's video, I want to show you how I make a Braid Quilt (finishing at 66" x 78")! While I don't have a pattern (they're seriously TONS of free ones) - I do have fabric requirements & cutting instructions typed up. While I'll definitely walk you through the steps to make this lovely quilt, my goal with this video is to help demystify the how a braid goes together so you can take this technique and apply it to all sorts of projects!
Fabric Requirements
- 1 Jelly Roll
- 1/2 Yard Accent Fabric
- 1 1/2 Yard Background Fabric
- 1 Yard Border
Cutting Instructions
- From the Jelly Roll; cut from each strip (6) 2.5" x 6.5" - pick out 110 pairs (total of 220) to use in the braids, rest is scraps
- From the accent fabric, cut 110 2.5" x 2.5" squares for diamonds in the middle
- From the Background fabric; cut (10) 6.5" x 6.5" for starting/ending the braids
- From the Background fabric; cut (6) 4.5" x WOF for vertical sashing
- From the Background fabric, cut (6) 1.5" x WOF for inner border
- From the Border fabric, cut (6) 5.5" x WOF for borders

Just an FYI, the red ball on jack is meant to go between the fabric pieces. It helps separate the fabric, so you don't cut in to the fabric pieces.😘 Thanks for sharing your talent!
@sewbecca

I know, but when I put the red ball inside the fabric - I have issues cutting. I put the sharp point in and am just very careful when I slip it through - usually don't have a problem.

Not true. By having the ball on top keeps the ripper from ripping fabric. Babylock retail shop and many known teachers have taught this been doing it wrong forever now no rips in fabric. Try it yourself

Personally, I like when you put the red ball up - I hate ripping out seams - and I made a super goof mistake a few days ago so I need to rip out a couple seams - it’s two days later and I still haven’t done this - but not I’m going to give your method a try as I was close to using some bad words previous!😁. And your explanation of adding the triangles in one end and the square in the other is perfect for me - I have what I call my “dumb days” periodically😳😳

I took a class and had to look this up to tell what year. Any wooo I took a class to learn this in 1989 yup a long time ago! I did my quilt with the square in the middle just like yours and let me tell you it looks nothing like yours. But, bless the instructor she did the best she could but not very well as an instructor. Now 35 years later, you pop up on my news feed! I feel that you did a fantastic job teaching me and all of us who want to do this type of quilt. I so appreciate you and your time and how to do this so beautifully. Thank you so much. I've been quilting now for 40 years and I can not wait to make this. Thank you sew much!

Awesome tutorial, definitely trying this pattern to use up some jelly rolls in my stash. This pattern would also make for a great temperature quilt - can do one side the high temp each day and the other side the low temp. Could get fancy and make the 2.5" square the weather for each day (rain, snow, sun, etc.) For the border, I do recommend measuring the same way you did the sashing strips between the braids. When I first started quilting I also just took a super long strip and attached the border - visually it looked fine but when I folded the quilt, it wasn't always lining up which was fine since I wasn't hanging these quilts up on a wall. This is a great video that walks through why you want to measure out your borders to keep your quilt from becoming wonky. This is especially important if you are going to longarm your quilt to ensure it stays as flat as possible. If the borders are off, your quilt might not lay flat for a longarm machine (jump ahead to 17:35 - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMB_hZiX0NHDfqs.htmlsi=ZZz9ge39HD5_skAm&t=1055) I care less about the quilt police and more about trying to increase my accuracy, precision, and overall skill which is I why I did switch over to measuring out my borders. I do this now for most quilts but not always - quilt for a dog bed, eyeball straight is fine :)

Becca, THANK YOU for including your change to the beginning square and setting triangles. Even though I do plenty of ‘corrections’ myself, I treasure every time I see someone else’s process. Most are similar but when I see one that is different from mine, I add another bit into my mental ‘fixit file’. This is a great project! I have done friendship braids with the half hexie. I’ve wanted to do one with the square and strips but it’s so far down the list I hadn’t looked for a pattern or instructions yet. Now I just need to note this video on my list! Yay! I use the "Quilt Police Method" for all my quilt! It assures me that I'm going to have a nice square quilt! I've seen way too many quilts that implement other methods of adding their borders without measuring to not always be square! This is not always the case, but I've taught beginner quilters who add borders without measuring their top first and you could definitely see the difference.
@sewbecca
@sewbecca 4 ай бұрын
Maybe I should have re-worded that...I don't think the technique is horrible - do what makes you happy with your quilt! I think the term Quilt Police refers to folks telling you to do something differently, without being asked. When that happens to me, it literally takes the wind out of my sails and makes me feel defeated instead of celebrating what I accomplished! #DefundTheQuiltPolice LOL

I don’t like adding bias edges as I go. Using her method introduces that bias edge to the quilt. This method has it stabilized until the braid is finished. Yes, there’s some waste - but not much. Good thing there’s more than one way to do things! I like my method, but if the binding tool works for you - that’s great!!

Do you like your blue long pins as much as flowerhead pins(if you use them). Im trying to find thinner sharper long pins. Ty loved this cute tutorial.

I love them MORE than the flowerhead pins. The cute pins are typically too thick - these aer the Magic Pins (I think I have a link for them in my description box below the video). They're fine and glide through fabric like butter!

I just want clarification on how your mom’s quilt was done. Am I correct that border around braids is 2 1/2 inches and sashing and accent is 2 1/2 inches each. I didn’t see those instructions in description box. Thank you so much. This is beautiful.

Yes, correct! I think we also did a 1.5" border around each braid before we did the 2.5" scrappy sashing and the 2.5" background sashing!

Going to try this as my first quilt. I have a question though. Why doesn’t your fabric get pulled into the feed dogs like mine😂? Like at the end of my run it seems to go off. Is that because I’m not experienced?
@sewbecca

There could be a number of reasons that cause this - and it's hard to diagnose without seeing what you're doing. One thing you can try is making sure that you're using leaders and enders when sewing to help keep the points of fabric from going into the holes where the feed dogs are. :)

In the braid video when Tiffany was at the longarm, I noticed a holder for thread cones on your wall. Would you share where you found a holder for those large cones? I am having a hard time finding one. Thanks.
