Becca, I agree with all of the great comments and i would like to add that your choice of binding fabric helped make things clear.

Do you use the same zipper pull from the zipper you cut off, or do you have to buy a separate one? I'm having the hardest time getting the zipper pull back on to the zipper. Do you have any tricks? Thank you.

Yes, I use the same zipper pull that fell off when I took the zipper apart. Check out the video starting at 11:49!

One way to efficiently use fabric is to cut oversized pieces that fit comfortably within the allotted space + seam allowance. I use ~1/4-1/2" upsize. A corner clipper ruler is your friend as it cuts with seam allowances, and will help you size the triangle if you are uncomfortable with quilter's math. I find that a hot hemmer makes the perfect creasing tool. If you have one, give it a try.

Becca, you may know this but Gudrun of GEDesigns has some free info on her web site for using the stripology ruler.

Using a triangle ruler or folded corner clipper would allow you to expertly cut the miter (with the seam allowance, the corner needs to have the 1/4" line running through it) that you need a save a few steps. A perfect framing for the lovely materials. A little less waste if employed a no waste flying geese method and then attach white strips of needed length. Negative is that it has more seams which may detract from the clean framing.

A resounding yes. (Great demo). I don't prewash anything. I do starch and press everything before cutting, but not precuts 10,5 precuts for the reasons you note. Those are precariously sized anyway (not square, not full size). I do not have a shrinkage problem with strips though. Now i have a steam generating iron which has a dry steam v. a wet steam. I think that I might go to my quilt lab and test shrinkage. I did use a liquid starch on my 6" Kaleido blocks seams only--I got shrinkage. They did not measure 6.5" (and they did prior to my great little experiment).

I’ve been using the Acorn Precision piecing pen for a number of years. I think you used a bit too much liquid which made the process take longer than necessary. I use it most while I’m piecing the block, it makes my points much more accurate.😊
