The curly hem with fishing line is a really fun effect that adds body and bounce to your hemlines. We show you how to recreate this technique so you can do this on your sewing machine.

Great video. I thought I'd let you know that I managed to used your technique on quite a heavy velvet Lycra fabric. To counteract the weight, I used a reel of gardening strimmer wire. It worked a treat, just don't wind it on too narrow a tube. I found a kitchen roll tube was about right. Was making a ballroom dance dress for my daughter.

Excited! I thought that I had imagined this. When I was a child, a million years ago, my Mom gave me the most beautiful night gown. My most favorite ever. It was a medium pale yellow with a chiffon overlay that was a bit lighter. The gown had this type of ending at the bottom and at the neckline. It came just past the knee. So adorable.

Hi, thanks for the educational video; it seems like the use of a blow dryer or heatgun may also be other options to get the nylon fishing line to stay in the new curl size, warm regards

Well dang!!! I ended up here somehow...I was looking for how to sew mitered corners!!! It must have been karma. I have several LONG skirts that I love, that I was procrastinating hemming shorter. Since I moved away from my favourite fishing river several years ago, I also have a tackle box with allll kinds of (now) useless fishing line! Good thing I never throw anything out :) My little universe converged right here! Thanks! I would never have thought of this... !!

It’s sooo much easier to leave a wider fabric before sewing. To trim close to the sew line after sewing, you’ll need to cut the hem longer by an inch or two. Much easier.

Didn't know this. I'm sure the thickness of the fishing line would make the curves smaller or larger. Thank you.

Hi Jacquiline.... A serger. I hadn't thought of that...but I have one! :) Thanks for the idea! That does sound faster than trying to get it to curl into the rolled hem foot on the machine. But on the serger you don't use the rolled hem foot?

If you dip the ends of your fishing line into clear nail polish and allow to dry. This gets rid of the sharp end and your stitch will hold the end better when starting.

I actually have a question. Whats the difference between this curly hem and a hem made from the horse hair braid? Or are they just two possible techniques with the same / similar outcomes?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 10 жыл бұрын
that's a good question! In my experience, the curly hem will actually bring the hem upwards. So as it curls, it's curling up, like towards the waistline. With a curly hem, it's a good idea to adjust the length, as the skirt could be shorter than expected once it's done. With the horsehair braid, the hemline of a skirt is simply going outwards so that the bottom looks fuller. I hope that makes sense, it's kind of hard to put it in words.

Oh, so that zig zag was going right over the edge? I thought the needle always had to be going into the fabric at all times. I like that look, and I love circle skirts, so I may try this with thinner fishing line.
@ProfessorPincushion

Lavenderrose73 Nope, because the top thread is looping with the bobbin thread even if it's not going through any fabric. If you try it, please post a pic on our fb wall :D

Does the fishing line go through the washer and dryer ok? Does horse hair braid was and dry well?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 жыл бұрын
+Leslie Elmore You can get it wet no problem but the heat is what sets the curl. If you throw it in the dryer, you'll more than likely lose the curly hem. horsehair braid is normally washable and dry cleanable. I'd probably still line dry instead of throwing it in the dryer.
