Now that you've been shown, you can practice on your own!
Buy leather tools using my amazon affiliate link: amzn.to/3bIt2jG or amzn.to/2OtcTpD to get started.
For more guides and to purchase leathercraft tools and leather visit my website - www.howtomakeal...
Enjoy!
I used a stitching pony (the timber structure I used to hold the leather pieces as I sew), but you can sew without one. I am currently working on a video on how to make a simple stitching pony so come back to my channel soon if you are interested in making one.
If you are interested in making a leather wallet, a leather iPad (tablet) case, a leather notebook cover, and more, head over to my channel and check out my other videos - / solidsk813
Subtitles in Spanish coming soon...

I've been making holsters and scabbards since 1965 and never saw the piercing the thread with the needle trick. Always had to keep adjusting to keep the thread in the eye! Thank you!

i forget what thats called but upholsters use that a lot along with a similar one where you wrap it around your hand and pull it through that when u dont want to pierce the thread

Hi Jonny, I do not have the technical abilities you have to make this video so please accept these comments as they are intended, which is to help you improve your stiching. I was shown how to stitch in a a saddle shop in the late 60's and early 1970's. First get some blunt point, egg eye needles such as John James Harness needles size 1,2,3 or 4 depending on your projects. Give your self room to work by using a decent length of thread, then when you start sewing start away from you and sew towards yourself.If you follow this sequence your sewing will improve and become faster.Push the awl blade through the second or third stitch mark as you should always double stitch your start and finish of the stitching and in thick leather double lock the final stitches.. When you are sewing towards yourself push the awl through the stich mark and then lay the needle on top of the awl blade so that when to withdraw the awl the tip of the needle falls into the hole made by the blade. Push the needle into the hole and then with the second needle place it behind the point of the first needle to make a cross, pinch the cross between your forefinger and thumb, pull the needle through the hole and at the same time place the little finger of your right hand on top of the thread that has just been drawn through the hole. Now rotate your right hand and lift your right elbow so that the needle that formed the cross lines up with the hole, place the tip of the needle into the hole and at the same time pull the thread with your left hand at a rate just a little faster than the rate you are feeding the needle through the hole at. This way it is not possible to split your thread with with the needle. When the tip of that needle comes through the hole loop the thread you have been pulling, over the top of the needle then pull the needle and threads through on both sides. pull your right hand thread slightly towards you and down and the left hand thread up and away. That way the thread is forced to lay correctly and each stitch is locked with an overhand granny knot inside the leather. Then repeat for each stitch. We used to be allowed 5 minutes to fit a buckle and leather loop on to a belt and that included skiving the end of the strap punching the hole for the tongue of the buckle, pricking for the stitches at 7 per inch and making the leather loop and then stitching the 2 inches down each side and sewing the loop in place as you went. If it was not to standard you were docked for your time and the wasted leather. All the best . Jeff.

Additionally to labrat7357 I would recommend to use a round ahle instead of the sword ahle when going through already made stitches, so you can avoid to damage them. Best wishes.
@labrat7357
@labrat7357 6 жыл бұрын
Hi DrAuRisT, Thanks for reading my long winded post. I did not mention using a round awl as I just plain forgot. I do use a round awl to stitch back and I have two blades , that are prized possessions, from the late 1960's made by Joseph Dixon. They are basically round with two small flats and a smooth non cutting curve at the tip. I have not seen them around since the 1970's and that is a shame as they were extremely well made and finished and were purpose made just for back stitching. All the best.

What keeps the threads you cut off from unraveling through the leather holes?
@jonnydaughtry
@jonnydaughtry 3 жыл бұрын
The leather 'heals' over the stitches. Nevertheless, I have had the final back stitch come out before, but after trimming it back the first back stitch has always stayed secure. If you're worried about it you can melt the last 3-5mm of the stitch using a lighter/match to make sure it doesn't come out, however my 9 year old leather wallet is all good without having to do that. Thanks for the question!
@whynotanyting

Bartłomiej Karalus The leather should tighten around the thread and because the thread is waxed it generally holds well by itself. You could melt the end of the thread into a little ball if you find it is not holding by itself. I've had to do this on some projects but 90% of the time it is not necessary :)
