Thank you Wendi! You make it so easy to understand. I love how you get right to the point and not put a bunch of needless bells and whistles in your video.

I learned that using a walking foot is very helpful and keeps the two fabric layers lined up.

I'm going to start on a velvet jacket tomorrow and I think I'll try the walking foot approach. I've used that with success on a leather jacket I made last year and several silk shirts. If that fails then at least I know I have a back up with using pins. I'm sure glad I found this video before I started out. Thanks.

I know! It's crazy how many pins it takes! When I get to the point where I think I have enough - I go in and add one more between each of them. :-)

@babybirthingmama I use a sharp (universal) needle with woven fabric and a stretch needle if it's stretchy (like a stretch velveteen or panne velvet). Basically - the nap doesn't effect the kind of needle I choose. And I use a regular presser foot. Nothing fancy - just a blue million pins. :-)

LOL! Yep! I made a cape with red velvet. The center panel of the cape was longer, even though I had pinned it. I just didn't pin it *enough.* fortunately, however, about 4 inches had to be trimmed from the bottom so everything eventually got evened out. Now I know to put even MORE pins.

They have a velvet foot now... Or always slightly tug and pull on the bottom fabric as you sew along

Thank you for a great tutorial. Would a walking foot solve this problem or would I still need to pin every inch? Thank you.

A walking foot can help, but it won't do it all. You really need to pin a LOT.

Hi, Wendy I am working with a 4 way stretch, burn out velvet that is absolutely beautiful but it keeps getting sucked under the top plate into the bobbin. I am using a stretch or microtex needle (I tried both) with my tension set to about 3-2. I changed my needles and rethreaded my machine to avail. Any advice?
@lat64eece
@lat64eece 5 жыл бұрын
I suggest two different things, either use a walking foot if you have one or start your seam 1/8 or so down from the end then backstitch but not all the way to the end of the fabric. Hope that helps.
@WendiGratz
@WendiGratz 5 жыл бұрын
Oof. That's a hard one. Maybe try a smaller needle? Or use a thread conditioner on it (like Thread Magic) to coat it with a slippery silicone coating to minimize drag on the fabric? The only other thing I can think of is to maybe change your throat plate. Some machines have one that has just a small hole in it - barely enough for the needle to pass through so it keeps fine fabrics from being pulled down. Good luck!
