Fancy sewing your own PJs? In this video, I’ll take you through from cutting your fabric to finishing your cute pyjama bottoms (pajama pants, if you prefer!).
I’m using the Jaimie sewing pattern from Tilly and the Buttons, which you can make as either full-length pyjama bottoms or flirty boyfriend shorts. It's exactly the same process to make our menswear version, the Joe pyjamas. Both patterns have an elasticated waist and optional drawstring tie. Find the sewing pattern at shop.tillyandthebuttons.com or ask for the pattern at your local haberdashery or fabric shop :)
Happy sewing!

This is an amazing, amazing pattern! The pants are so comfortable and I've sewn them up in different types of fabrics for each season, I just can't get enough of them. Thanks also for such a fantastic How-To video Tilly!

Thank you for such clear instructions! I think I'm going to give these a go! I typically sleep in underwear and a t and find that most comfortable, and I'm working on a top right now that I'd love to be able to wear in public with bottoms I make, so I'm thinking I may make these in black and see if that makes them work as casual pants (trousers) to wear in public! They are very cute!

Loved this tutorial. My favourite pajamas are close to being binned..so looking to make some new ones. Video was simple and easy to follow. What the best aspect of your video was that you had the background music at just the perfect level and not overbearing like most videos. I was still able to follow your video with background music playing.

Very cute! Mayby you can stress out to mirrow the pattern pieces, if cut out single. I am not such an experienced sewer and ended up with 2 left sleeves at the Frankie top and not enough fabric. It was a life lesson.

My favorite hack is to sew a few inches of elastic in between two long drawstring ties. Then you get the adjustability of drawstrings, but can still slip them on and off over your hips without untying/retying.

Hiya :) These are not the same as the Margot PJs from Love at First Stitch. They have a different shape to that pattern, for example, a deeper bum curve and dipped waistline, plus a longer leg. They also have an elasticated waist option as well as a drawstring option, and a shorts version. Plus this is available as a standalone pattern with a free video tutorial x

I’ve just completed these...just a couple of things...how do I stop the elastic twisting in the waistband when wearing/washing? Also I’m only 5foot so had to alter length, I followed your tutorial on how to do it and the back and front ended up different lengths despite me removing same amount! I want to make another pair but really need help before I do ! Please?
@janw7157
@janw7157 3 жыл бұрын
I hope you got your answer to keep elastic from rolling, there's more than one method for that, I sew a line of stitching through the seam and elastic on both sides top to bottom on the waistband. As to the length, lay the pj's out flat on your bed or floor with waistband and seams straight and mark your hems.
@stephaniepaterson6340

@@janw7157 thanks for the tip on elastic as no, I didn’t get a reply. I’ll try that as I’m going to have another go. As for odd lengths, I meant when you alter the pattern to shorten the legs...I measured from the line exactly the same amount for each leg, cut pattern and put back on line (followed Tilly’s tutorial) yet when I cut out fabric they were different lengths! I’ll google altering patterns! Thanks again for taking time to reply

You can stitch like J Wilson said. Or you can buy non roll elastic. I do both, the stitching for me only serves as aesthetics. But if I don’t have non roll, I still stitch.

Can you use brushed cotton for this please ?
@DoReMeaCulpa
@DoReMeaCulpa 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you absolutely can use brushed cotton ( or what I know as known as cotton flannelette). Just be mindful of the nap of the fabric, so the nap is going the same way for all the pattern pieces. Because of the nap you will likely need more fabric, depending on fabric width, pattern size, etc. And, flannelette is even easier for beginners to work with as the pieces kind of stick together better when joining two pieces together, again due to three nap or brushed surface of the fabric making the fabric surface less slippery. I used to teach sewing to tweens and teens, and cotton flannelette was the preferred fabric for pj pants or boxer shorts for these beginner to sewing.

Hi can anyone help me please. I uave followed the pattern to the slotting ine leg -right side out, inside the wrongside out leg. Hi, I’m just making my 2nd pair & im having same problem...took me a while to figure it out...my material is same back and front...I’ve accidentally sewn one leg ‘inside out’ ...you can’t tell with the material...but when it comes to sewing the crotch together nothing matches! I can’t unpick mine as I’ve done my neatest yet trimming and oversew stitch...sigh.....now to cut out another front and back leg! Just a thought that you may have done the same?

Checking which way the pattern is facing when cutting (mirroring).......

@@stephaniepaterson6340 Oh no! I've cut my third leg (and also included a pocket - very botchy job though lol) and have yet to put it together. It is a good lesson learned - a lot of sewers I've talked to have made similar mistakes so it's not just us! Could/would you unpick one of the legs to try again? I love that this is meant to be an easy sew and it has taken me weeks haha. Hope the next project doesn't have two right legs!

@@amkra08 you’re right...maybe I should and and have another look at the original leg...it’s just that I took the time to trim the fabric and do an overlock stitch on the edge (on a sewing machine!) ...right now they are bundled out of sight! It’s lessons learned! Glad your pjs are progressing and I’m sure your pocket can’t be worse than mine... I had problems following the video!
