Sharpening curved scissors is not for the faint of heart! They can be confusing, and require some extra techniques and tools to effectively sharpen them. I use a 1" wide stone that is contoured/rounded on one side to match the curved bevel and inside ride line, and the flat side of that stone is used to do the opposite ride line and bevel.

I would have had to try and find a very specific specialist for this, instead I find someone who has the same knowledge in a different field that applies. Its crazy the value of communication! Thanks for this video, its starting me off in a very productive skill!

The crazy beauty of sharpening is that it is actually quite segmented between the different types of blades. Kitchen, fishing, hunting, shaving, and scissor sharpeners all follow the same rules, but have specialized procedures to ensure the rules get followed! I try to tiptoe through all of these genres and cross pollenate where ever I can. Thanks for watching!

That was awesome! Though I don't intend to try this difficult challenge, I've added your techniques to my knowledge base.

Ideally you would use a jig for this kind of thing, but the techniques are exactly the same, just not freehanded.

I think the concave part of the shear is supposed to use the convex part of sharpener. To prevent widening the ride line?
@JendeIndustries
@JendeIndustries 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! In general, the concave aspect of the ride line needs to be sharpened flatly. Over an extended period of time the contact points between the concave/hollow will widen and ultimately go flat, then convex from abrasion (which is why many people avoid the ride line all together). You are not trying to recreate the hollow grind on the ride line, unless you are actually trying to regrind them to hollow - which is far more advanced than even this. 👍

Man, I told my buddy I only sharpened knives, and he was like "come on, how hard can it be!?" Then I saw that they were radiused and knew I was doomed. Just going to strop them with diamond paper and give them back haha Honestly, I'm not even good at sharpening knives. I just do it to relax. Never actually tried to improve my technique.

The key to sharpening is to always have fun. Many people enjoy the Zen of it, but sometimes new or different blades cause frustration because it ruins the mood. However, if you persevere, then it becomes a fun challenge once you get over the learning curve of a new type of blade. It took me about 6-8 months to FINALLY understand honing straight razors - at least enough to get a usable result! It was seriously frustrating and all consuming, but once everything came together with the theory, practice and technique, honing razors is now something that is relaxing.

So, in order to keep from touching the ride line, would you just slightly come in a higher angle?
@JendeIndustries
@JendeIndustries 2 жыл бұрын
I actively go for the ride line :). However, if the blades don't separate, then I would make one, maybe 2 very light passes flat on the ride line in order to remove some of that burr buildup. That avoids crunching the edge when you close them up.

Lovely technique and finish! What is the name of the curved edge stone you are using? And what model is the buffer machine?
@JendeIndustries

The stone I used is the Naniwa 1K Chocolate bar, it's homemade. I cut it from a full size stone. The buffer is a 1hp no name bought locally.

I'm of the school of thought on scissors that sharpens both sides of a blade. Many times a ride line is corrupted, or there is just a big honking burr to remove. There was a hollowness to the inside of the blades though.
