Hey Marc, you think you could do a follow up video on what exactly a gooseneck scraper is used for and give some examples?

HAHAHA, love the opening sequence. Thanks for this great video - I've wondered about sharpening card scrapers, too, and this probably answered those questions as well. Keep up the good work!

It's hard for me to hear, but is the burnisher drawing out the burr with a slight grinding sound/feel? I always thought it was supposed to slide pretty smoothly, but then again I've never gotten a burr that has given anything but dust.

@Wally Ramos. Your comment is set to private so people can't reply directly. But to answer your question, a woodworker is not defined by their tools, it's how they use them. You can see that beautiful things can be made from $5 tools as well as $1,500 tools, it all depends on the hands they are in. Paul Sellers uses almost zero powertools and has picture perfect projects. I would suggest getting comfortable with the tools you already own, learning how they work best for you. If/when you feel comfortable and find they are not doing the job you need, and you need more power behind them, like a higher amp router, or a bandsaw that is good for resawing, Amazon always has every tool you can imagine with thousands of reviews so you can pick what you think will work best for you. Just remember, a bad woodworker blames his tools.

I am having trouble of understanding the last part of the process. I cannot find any videos talking about or how to that discusses it. With scrapers you have the burr on both sides. But in all of the videos including yours, when you burnish you do it at a minimal angle to the scraper. That has only put a burr on that side of my scrapers. Do I need to do the slight angle to both sides to put a burr on both sides? Or am I doing something wrong or different?

Yes, you have to do the same thing on both sides if you want a burr on both sides.

Why is everyone acting like Macgyver with the burnishing process. A burnisher is about $20 at woodcraft. And I'm sure even cheaper online. Buy a burnisher and stop making card scrapers out of old saw blades and your dads Chevy muffler. Card scrapers are on sale at woodcraft this month. A whole set for $16. Good grief.

You don't sharpen cabinet scrapers with whetstones. You ONLY file and burnish. It will be perfect just like that. You can even use only a file but it will not hold the edge that long. Matter of taste really.
