Trent Fisher from Born and Raised Outdoors joins the Work Sharp team in the Workshop to sharpen his hunting knives before they head out for their 6-state elk hunt! Land of the Free 3.0 is coming follow along on their channel: / @bornandraisedoutdoors
Preseason knife sharpening is an excellent way to make sure you are prepared for success in the field. Our Tips:
1. Use an angle you can repeat in the field. If you have a field sharpener that sharpens at 20 degrees, use a 20 degree sharpener at home.
2. Sharpen all your knives at once. This improves practice and efficiency. Sharpen all knives on a medium or coarse abrasive, then progress to finer grits for all knives.
3. Use proper technique - know your sharpener, and don't round the tip! Sharpen each side of the blade symmetrically, and stop with the tip of the knife on the abrasive.

Thank you all for what you do! I have been an EDC guy for over 30 years. I'm also a hunter and my wife is amazing in the kitchen. Recently been upgrading my EDCs and got a new quality kitchen knife set a year ago. Was looking for a high quality system and am awaiting my Ken Onion Elite arriving today! While waiting for shipment (and watching almost every video of yous and others on the system these last few days) I also decided to get the field sharpener to keep in my truck (ordered yesterday). This morning I decided I also need the pocket sharpener for my hunting bag. So when my wife sees UPS show up a few times this week, I am going to blame it on your wonderful videos. Hope y'all don't mind!?!? Looking forward to a few days in my shop learning the system with some older knives and getting that wonderful edge on our quality blades. Thank you all! Update, my KO arrived! Practiced on 6 knives prior to my Kershaw Dividend and all 7 knives are incredibly sharp! Definitely loving it all. Using the tool attachment freehand took only a few hours to get comfortable with and the edges I got look like factory! Thanks again!

Thank you for all the great tutorials...they help a lot. I also love using the Ken Onion sharpener. I'm sharping all my family's knives. I was wondering if you all could do a tutorial on how to sharpen ceramic blades. Thanks!!

Great show! I for the most part grind my blades to a shiny sharp convex grind, except a few heavy duty camp knives that I purposely keep as a crazy sharp flat grind. Could you please explain & show blade grind angles, purposes and how much material is initially taken off the blade going from flat to convex and how much blade material is saved over time from the sharpening process? Once the work is done maintenance is very easy. And why top quality steels can last generations. I’ve a full tang knife that is made from ELMAX steel every one of us hone the blade weekly and you just cannot kill that blade. We don’t slice paper, we split hair. Lol great video!

Noted! good suggestion - the process is the same however some adjustments may need to be made to accommodate the larger blade.

I've owned the Ken Onion WorkSharp "ManTool" for about a year now and needed some good video instructions on operating the ManTool. So thanks for that. I would like to see the Ken Onion ManTool used to sharpen a knife with serrations and a Tanto point, say on something like the CRKT M16-14. I imagine the knife would be inserted at the end of the serrations and withdrawn at the point prior to the Tanto point beginning. Is there a specific tool used to sharpen the serrations, maybe a ceramic rod? Thank You

@WorkSharpOutdoor 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've got a good handle on it. The concepts are all the same. Don't roll through the transition on the Tanto, treat them as two separate blades. Same with partially serrated blades. Only sharpen the non-serrated portion like a traditional knife - treat the serrations separately. We'll have a video up in two weeks talking about serrations.

Should use safety glasses when using the belt. Last thing you want is a piece of the metal coming off in the eye. Also remind them if you do it and the blade is warmer than you can touch your going to slow. You should always be able to touch the blade and its not warm. Should mention why and about knives loosing temper. Not at the speed your sharpening great video.

Sorry don't know what happened but could couldn't delete the comment before this one. New to sharping I am so happy to find your workshop on sharping so I watched all 17 videos today. Will have to watch them again. I want to subject to "Can you Sharpen This" what about wood carving knives - main the spoon carving knife? Could you explain the different metals good and bad for future knife purchases and explain why one is better worst?

Thanks for watching and following along! Great suggestions, we'll get our hands on a carving knife and then share some tips. As for knife steels, we will cover this more in depth, but for now check out this page it does a great job of showing what makes steels different. In general S30V and S35VN are great steels and found in many higher quality knives. Good edge retention, and very corrosion resistant. The other factor is toughness (ability to bend and not break and return to original shape) 3V is a good steel if you're looking for Toughness but it is usually softer and does not offer as much edge retention. knifeinformer.com/discovering-the-best-knife-steel/

Isn't the ceramic and the pocket knife sharpener both set at a 25° angle not 20°?

I think that was the first time that you have said to start and stop it with the blade in the sharpener.

We use this as standard technique and usually say, "Place, Power, Pull." It prevents a swale from being developed toward the heal.

If you sharpen at 17 at home, can you just put a microbevel on with the field sharpener at 20? And how would you recommend field sharpening the new Benchmade grind that is 14 degrees? Great videos by the way!
@WorkSharpOutdoor
@WorkSharpOutdoor 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions! Yes, you can micro bevel to 20 in the field if you use 17 at home. Personally this is something I do. Much harder to go the other way, sharpening at 22 at home and touching up in the field at 20 degrees won't work. As for the 14 degree select edge.. if you have a sharpener that will adjust to 14 degrees I recommend this as the best option. However sharpening to 15 degrees will be nearly identical and perform very well on your knives. If using the new CPM s45vn I recommend maintaining the edge with ceramic and leather, we have done a bit of testing and this steel holds an edge incredibly well and can be brought back with very little effort on a ceramic rod and strop.

@@WorkSharpOutdoor thanks for the reply! A field sharpener that you can adjust to 17 and 14 or 15 would be a great product to make in the future as well.

How do you know when it's time to replace a belt?
@WorkSharpOutdoor
@WorkSharpOutdoor 3 жыл бұрын
Belts will usually sharpen 100 knives. They used stacked abrasives so when one layer wears out they will still cut for much longer. Go by your gut, if it's been a while and you're not getting there as fast as you think you should then it's probably time to change them. The fine belts may last you a lifetime if you store them off the machine and keep them dry.

I do not use the workx sharp sharpener... my father inlaw does and after a couple years of sharpening you have to get a new knife. Grinds them to nothing. I've had the same buck for 20 years and I just use a knife file after use...
