I love 'playing' with axes and I own a 'few' of them. In Spring 2018 - after the Scandinavian Outdoor award Jury meeting - I started with the review of the Hultafors Åby Forest Axe. With the axe came a grinding puck and a nice leather protection cloth that has proven to be very practical when sharpening an axe. So why not do a tutorial on How To Sharpen an Axe... or, how I do it.
I could have used the leather cloth (or my belt) for stropping the axe but I hardly ever need do this after sharpening. This is most of the time fine enough for me.
Although I do mention and use the Hultafors gear, they have NOT asked me to make this video and they are NOT paying me for this tutorial in any way. Please read the following too.

Hi Gijs, thanks for the tips - that looks like a really nice and simple way to sharpen axes; now that we're in lock-down in the UK, I shall have time to try it out over the weekend :-)

After 1 year using the sharpening puck, I can say that it wears out quickly. And it doesn't get the blade razor sharp. I use the Fällkniven DC4 for that.

Great quality filming! One thing though, 180 is coarser than 600.

Hi Antti, I know.... what did I do wrong? Did I say it the other way around? That would be a stupid mistake. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

I just bought the Gransfors forest axe 2 weeks ago. This video is perfect timing for me. Are your gloves just standard leather gloves?

My gloves are quite special.... Yes leather bit not the normal one. Have a look at the link: www.crudsweden.se/store/p/gloves-269896/gjöra-gloves-680716 or if you are in The Netherlands contact these guys www.vriezz.nl/catalog/Crud They take some time to wear in - is this how I say this? - but they are comfy and super strong. Maybe I should do a review on those too.... If you need more info: don't hesitate ta ask ;-) Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Gijs

The word you were looking for is "burr." Remove the burr from the edge.

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews No, a burr is what you get when you're sharpening a blade and you have the metal fold over to the opposite side. I think the word he was looking for when he used "breams" was nick or chip.

As always, great video! I usualy strop my knifes and axes to get a shaving edge. Useless for an axe but i like it that way. See you soon @ vonkerplas 😉

Dear Jan, It is the way to go to be honest, especially if you use the axe for carving too because it gives a nicer clean cut. Yeah! The water is almost low enough again for this secret hide away ;-) Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Gijs

I wish I could sharpen my ex... She wasn't very bright!!! 🤣 Only joking, she was great. 😳 Anyway, thanks for all the tips, I'm waiting for an old Brades 353 6lbs felling pattern from ebay, and I've ordered the Hultafors puck. Would you add water on sharpening stone? Cheers! Keep up the great work. 👍🏼
