I've been sharpening gas hedge trimmers for 18 years and I've always used a metabo grinder with a 4-in flapper wheel that way at sharpenser blades nice and smooth with no rough edges I only have to use a Dremel for the back blades that I can't get the grinder too try using a flapper wheel much smoother and much faster
@CleanCutLawnsNC
@CleanCutLawnsNC 6 ай бұрын
Yeah that makes sense for sure. I've tried the 4 in wheel but for me, it leaves to much room for error. I will use it on mower blades however. The Dremel just gave me a way to not mess anything up so easily if that makes sense!

@@CleanCutLawnsNC yeah that definitely does make sense yeah I use the flapper wheels also for lawn mower blades I tried the grinding wheels but I just made too much of a rough edge I just got a load of 35 hedge trimmers in yesterday so I'm going to be doing half of them today and the other half in about 2 weeks

I use my hedgecutters almost every day but generally find I only need to sharpen them once a year, not that I'm lazy but Stihl and Husqvarna make quality blades & they have excellent longevity so I will have a day where I get a few beers, sit in the shed/workshop, remove the blades and sharpen them by hand with a file! I looked up a few videos about hedge trimmer sharpening because I've just recently aquired a used one and damn does it need sharpening! Why would you not remove the blade and sharpen it in a vise to prevent damaging the bottom mating surface the blade slides on? And why would you not flip the main bar over and sharpen the back side which seems to have the same slope? It would appear that what you're doing is like sharpening a pair of scissors, but only sharpening one blade instead of both, but I see that you can definitely use a Dremmal Tool and that's worth something.
@CleanCutLawnsNC
@CleanCutLawnsNC 4 жыл бұрын
I did flip it over and sharpen the other side. I just didn't want to make the video longer than it needed to be.
@bobkeeler5964
@bobkeeler5964 3 жыл бұрын
to answer your question on "why would you not just remove the blades and sharpen them?". The reason why is because removing blades on a gas powered hedge trimmer takes a lot of time and the blades are directly connected to the gear box and sometimes the gears can and will literally fall out and you will most likely be chasing loose hedge trimmer parts all over your garage or at best you will create a nice "puzzle" for you to put back together. It is much much easier to just sharpen the blades without removing the blades, trust me..

I've used an electric B & D trimmer for years. It's been a workhorse but I no longer am, and wanted to make my job easier. kzfaq.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG Around the corners, the small side yard etc. was a pain to run the cord out to, so I bought this thinking I'd use it for touch-ups and hard to reach places. Well, I haven't used the corded one since!This is so light weight and so much easier. It has all the power I need because I start wearing down after about 20 minutes and I haven't run out of battery yet. It takes about two hours to charge. I've used it about twice a week for a month and still have line left too. My favorite feature is the blade inside the shield that keeps the line trim to where I don't even have to think about it. You can see from my pic that it's been heavily used and I probably should clean it more often. Very happy with it.

That's pretty cool. I definitely understand wanting to make life a little easier. I like my ego battery powered!

It’s a bit of a make do fix, the edge should be ground on these blades, as using a rotary grinder on these blades will leave low spots, making them worse than before you started.. Only costs a few £/$ to get it done properly, could have got 5/6 sharpenings for the cost of the tool

Probably so! But I like doing it myself just in case I can't get into a dealer during normal business hours! Thanks brother

This seems too aggressive. Maybe the speed on the Dremel is too fast.

Not if you keep the angle right, it seems to work well for me. I just found the speed that worked for me.
@MauriceMamba

That speed is way to fast. From the look of the spark that’s coming out . I use a dremel similar to the one he used , but just turn down the speed some , and you’ll be fine.

Omg im sorry but this is the worst way to sharpen these hedgers. Im mean using a stone that way is taking way to much off. Dont get me wrong it could sharpen them. But once there dule you will have to repeat. After a little time you wont have a blade left. You dont need to take much off to sharpen any type of blade.

Not trying to be rude but I've had these same blades for years and they're still working perfect. So this statement is not correct
@shyskeleton1665
@shyskeleton1665 2 жыл бұрын
@@CleanCutLawnsNC ok thats good if you still have them. Im just saying using a high speed dremal and a stone will work it just might not last as long. The stone takes off more than needed to sharpen when if you use just a simple fine hand file and do maybe 3 or 4 passes threw each blade is almost all you need. Now that does depends on how worn the blades are as well. I do apologize i wasnt meaning it to be rude just stating that this is not the best way or long term solution.

As a professional in sharpening all types of blades what you use to sharpen a blade best determines on the use of the blade on how sharp and how long you want it to last. A few different type of files.

So that's all it take to make your hedge trimmer cut like a new one ............Funny how some people think they know everything. Removing the dirt from your hedgetrimmer " all you have to do" like you say , with a dremel isn't enough budddy and it doesn't make your hedge trimmer cut better. Those 57 dollars you pay for sharpening your blade isn't only for dirt removing like you did . They adjust the screws, make sure there's no gap between the blades , change the drums between the blades when worn out and add greese. So next time, try to make an honnest video, sharpen your hedge trimmer the way it supposed to be done and do the final test , trimm a yew hedge with your dremel sharpened hedge trimmer.......
