Great video! You're a very smart person!!!!! I think after seeing this wonderful video I'll just use my finger to sharpen it on a stone. I'll put some oil on the sharpening stone and just move the cutter around. I haven't done it so I can't tell you the results. If you can sharpen a knife on a stone you can sharpen these cutters. Your video is so wonderful! Thanks so much! UPDATE: It worked! All you need to do is take a stone and put some oil on it and rub the cutter in a circular motion for a few minutes . It actually worked! I just went back to the sharpened cutter and I'm impressed!

Hey I bought replacements for my sensatouch 3d but they were absolute crap. I didn't throw the old ones out so I am thinking of trying this on the old blades and the new ones. Thanks for this!

Thanks for the tutorial - the blades do cost almost as much as new shaver. I will be doing this with my two Norelco Shavers.

I used a very fine sharpening stone. And rotate it by hand. It worked well. Must use honing oil for good results.

If you balance the bare cutters on the electric razor armatures and holding your abrasive/metal polish creamed hand mirror piece of glass upside down you can then use the action of the razors electric drive to spin the cutters.

Robert Edinger demonstrates a much easier honing method using a mirror and polishing or lapping compound. A far superior finish with much less wear to the cutting surfaces. Unless you run into a nail while shaving your cutting edges should never need more than a light honing to make the whole cutting surface shine brightly. The method shown in this video would be ideal for cleaning up very old and ragged cutters. Power sharpening ANY heat treated materiel can cause overheating and loss of temper, be careful and go slow. There is also an age old controversy over whether to sharpen towards the cutting edge or away from it. The method shown here sharpens away from the edge, taking material from the back, or fattest part of the edge towards the front, of narrowest part of the edge. This method tends to leave a curl or burr on the thinnest part of the cutting edge. Some chainsaw sharpeners knock this burr off with a piece of hardwood and many chainsaw Mfr.'s recommend this method for laymen in the field. It is much better to sharpen towards the edge itself, leaving no burr at all and ensuring a clean, straight cutting edge, but that is just my opinion developed over the years and confirmed (to me, anyway) by looking at the finished blades with a 10 power jewelers loupe and comparing sharpening styles by using each type equally then checking wear with the loupe again. My thanks to TOTBox for showing us how to deal with the really dinged up blades. Heck, three or four re-sharpens and you just saved the purchase price of a brand new shaver!

yesterday I took an old mirror no longer in use , checked which way the blades rotate in the razor , took a spoonfull of baking soda for the grit part and added some toothpaste and mixed ,(not the expensive whitener ) any with baking powder in will be better but not really nesseary , then with finger on head blade rotate with (very slight pressure) on the mixture, I do mine three times a year for 25 turns, ( DONT PRESS HARD) it simply works,Alan

Great idea. Does the blade get shorten if you spin it more than required.
@MrDoingEverything
@MrDoingEverything 9 жыл бұрын
Sushant Thakare It does not need much. Yes of course it will if its in spinning. Spinning is only needed to put the sharp edge back on it that's it. Nothing more. Its just giving some one more time with the blades before new ones will be needed to be bought. Good luck

several other videos show how to do this with a piece of glass, toothpaste or very fine sandpaper and polish the surfaces by hand. No drill or magnet needed. This seems way too complicated compared to the other methods.
@Erik_Thygesen
@Erik_Thygesen 4 жыл бұрын
But it's fast and efficient. Just because you don't own a magnet and a drill doesn't make it complicated. He could resharpen blades and compete on price and time on any other option.

shouldn't you sharpen in the direction of the cut in order to not get a burr on the edge? And isn't 220 grit a bit coarse for getting a razor edge? I was thinking of using 1000+ grit and wet sand my heads by just letting the shaver spin them on the sandpaper but I wasn't really confident in how to go about doing it (hence why I ended up on this video)
@MrDoingEverything
@MrDoingEverything 8 жыл бұрын
+eddson11 How I did it in the video worked out good. There would be many methods that will work the same. Grit would matter on the spinning RPM,s. Using the shaver to do this. I would also use a higher grid sand paper. I have found on ebay these cutting tips are very cheap. I no longer even sharpen them any more cause of the cheapness they can be bought for on the right web site. Take a look on ebay. I,m sure it will shock you how cheap they are. I never knew this at that time. So cheap to buy.

Thinking out side box Alright, I think I'm gonna order some (they really are cheap, I never even thought to look for them on ebay) and give your method a try on the ones I've got, I have a fine sharpening stone and a drill, only thing missing is a strong magnet but my cutters have a piece of plastic on the back that I should be able to put in the chuck, or I'll just do it by hand. Thanks for the tips!

This is MASSIVE over complication. Just hold a cutter by hand and rub it against the wet cutting stone. Change your grip/turn the cutter in your hand frequently to counteract any tendency to cut one area more than another. In place of a stone, wet or dry 1500 grit sandpaper (wet) over the kitchen or bathroom countertop works.

Will only work with older style blades. Most new shavers have a slightly round blade profile, so you can't hone it flat. You can buy a tool for the new shavers to sharpen them, see my video review here:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/od6UrNaAqrulgIk.html

For your type of blades, you need to rotate in the "opposite" direction that grabs the tip of your fingers's skin. Depending on how you look at the blade, the back or front side. It's confusing so look at direction of your shaver's rotating spindles and that will be the direction the blades need to turn to cut, or looking at the front end of your shaver and it will be the same as looking at your shaver's spindles only.
@leroyusa935
@leroyusa935 3 жыл бұрын
The blades, looking at them from the front should turn in the same direction as your shaver's spindles. To sharpen the blades, rotate the blades in the "opposite" direction, looking at its front view. Example, looking at the front of the blade, if its rotating clockwise, the rear view side of the blade will be turning counter-clockwise.

Too hard and terribly inaccurate. Sharpen the cutters right in the razor. Use 1 micron diamond lapping compound (about 2 bucks on eBay). That way, you sharpen the tiny cutters AND the heads (combs). Be sure to wash all the compound out.

Ooops big mistake using the strong magnet! The blades will become magnetic too and keep sticking to the metal housing and probably have hard time spinning! What's wrong with just using tips of your fingers to slowly rub the boades on the stone?! Too lazy perhaps lol?

Never had that make a difference. Lazy or the thought of is also related to magnetic energy. LOL Cheers : )
