How To Sharpen Log Splitter Wedge W/Head to Head Comparison!

We will show how the stock 6 way wedge vs sharpened 6 way wedge works splitting beech with the Eastonmade 12-22. Unexpected results that I didn't even consider but can definitely add up! We split 10 rounds of green beech and time how long it takes and how many times the autocycle kicks back without completing the stroke. We then use the Milwaukee M18 grinder and a sharpening wheel to put an edge on the 6 way and run 10 similar rounds through the splitter so we can compare! Along with improved splitting, reduced wear and tear on the machine, and lower fuel consumption we found an additional benefit!

Sharpening the wedges is a must, especially with the box wedge. Great video!! Good Luck going for that record of 3:24 from Andrew. He did have a couple of slipups, but maybe only cost him 5-8 seconds. Have fun and stay safe.

Lol, true you want a clean cut. If you made it through the 7 minute 1/3rd of a cord with all your fingers I’d say you have it figured out.

This was really cool video idea. What really impressed me was the cycle time was so quick you just kept pace with it. I rarely use a splitter, I swing a maul. I’m more efficient with a maul than a box store splitter. But when ever I do get a splitter it will be one of those eastonmade units, that is incredible.

Hi Heath - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I've used an 8hp Italian vertical electric splitter for over 15 years, producing up to 180 cords some years, now down to say 30. For me it has always been a no brainer to keep my single wedge as sharp as hell to reduce pressure on all the machine components. I don't fear the sharp wedge on my machine - I consider the real danger for me is my fingers getting pinched either between logs or especially against the splitter table, hence the reason for me preferring to use log tongs to distance my fingers from these risks.

Hi guys, a quick squirt of spray vegetable oil on the wedge once in awhile also helps speed things up. I keep a can beside my splitter.

One more tip ! For knarly heating wood full of knots I have used a pump up garden sprayer with used motor oil cut with diesel fuel to spray the wedge down. Reduces friction quite a bit. If the wood is going to a cooker then use used cooking oil as a lube on the wedge.

I believe that Andrew nade a comment in one of his videos that they blunt the edges for safety reasons. What people do with the units after purchase is up to them, thus removing the Liability issues from Eastonmade.

I'm new to this channel. I notice the kickback most often happens when wood piles up in front after splitting. When it falls off & empties the plate, there was no kick back. Maybe taking off the paint will help like shining a bull dozer blade or a turning plough. Yep, a sharper edge works better. Fingers can't take it whether dull or sharp, Ouch!

I've noticed that most of the wedges all get sharpened on one side, therefore pushing the block of wood to one side. When going through a multi- edge head, the block cannot move off to one side because all the wedges are holding it creating compaction. If you were to sharpen on both sides you would reduce this compaction by 50% sliding through with more ease and more speed

Great fun. I was allway told that a dull splitting maul, splits better than a sharp splitting maul. But hydraulic wood splitters are different beast. Could you do a test on that. ?💪🏻 Dull splitting maul compared to sharp one ? Great videos. I enjoy them.

The only problems with a sharp wedge is edge deformation easier when hitting stuff and you will cut yourself when you bump into it. But it does slice thru knotty wood better. Hoping to meet you at the Paul Bunyan show in October.

Definitely have to be careful and yes they will damage a bit easier, probably need to be touched up a little more frequently too. I’d say it saves a decent amount of wear and tear on the machine though. I’m sure we’ll meet, we had a lot of fun last year!

Andrew Easton said it is ok to sharpen wedges. They are not sharp from the factory for safety concerns. I definitely would recommend sharpening.

My axis came in Friday and I'm loving it but but I was shocked how blunt the blade is. Not even rounded or anything, it's just flat on the bottom.

I bet if you put a bit of an edge on it it’ll work even better. No need to make it shaving sharp but not blunt should help. Enjoy the Axis, they are a sweet splitter!

I too keep the single wedge on splitter as close to razor sharp as possible. It helps thru stringy wood. And straight grain just pops open.

The bar remounted on top of tote could be welded horizontally to top of tote or bolt same way so that you can store a second tote on top

Great comparison! But use your legs more for lifting. This is coming from someone who processed firewood for a woodstove to heat the house 24/7 for 36 years! At 72 the back still works - playsing golf three times a week in retirement!! 😀

Hello HWM & HWW, a sharp wedge or a dull wedge no safer either way as far a where your hand is, less kickbacks or pieces that spin out and off the splitter is a safety thing, but in my experience that is either speed or nasty knots, soft wood or stringy wood I agree sharp is good, a more blunt edge on a wedge is not bad for nice straight grain hard woods, as it tends to need a bit more force but pops the wood open, many times you do not need to run the entire stroke of the ram to split, Good Vid, shows that knowing what you are up against with different types of wood, if you split some GUM or ELM, that sharp wedge will shine even brighter.

I'm splitting fresh elm right now using a 27-ton splitter and it is a bear, especially if there are knots or splits. I did sharpen the wedge and saw little benefit, although I did it with a hand file and it certainly is not as sharp as Heath got his. I may need to invest in a grinding wheel.

What is the difference between what you call premium firewood and the wood you burn in the winter?

The premium wood that we sell is the clean split, nice looking wood. The wood we burn is the ugly knotty splits, splits with some rot or punky spots in it.

The faster time results of - so ks my feeling - the less kickbacks and not oft the splitter pushing ist faster through the wedge. Maybe the wedge will hold longer when unsharpend?

Yes the faster time has a lot to do with the fewer kick backs since we would hold the levers on once it kicked back which kept the times closer. The sharper wedge will probably need a little touch up now and then but I’d say it saves quite a bit of wear and tear on the splitter.

My 6 way and 4 way wedges are newer. The 6 way I got with this splitter was damaged from the previous user so this is a replacement.

that splitter is a factory. beats mine, but it's a single wedge 20 ton. Do you ever stage the logs ahead to be split and move the trailer for the pile?

They definitely pump out the wood. Yes, we split in a lot of different ways. I am in the process of setting up more of a firewood processing center to streamline our operation but have not finished it yet.

Tom, it’s not adding much wear and tear to the wedge. I think the easier it splits the rounds it saves wear and tear on the machine.

I don’t know why Andrew isn’t sharpening his wedges. I know he says they are too dangerous to his employees once sharpened but I think they could simply cover the sharpened edge and leave the covers on until final delivery. Simple enough to put a strip of pipe insulation over the sharpened edge then wrap that with packing tape.

@@hardworkingmanoutdoors we see the same results with our box wedge. Sharp makes less trash. (But still a huge mess)

Yeah I imagine it’s a more pronounced difference on the box wedge but for sure they always produce debris.

Without wasting a bunch of time & energy, all you have to do is get yourself a "sharp chisel, and a dull chisel". Which one cuts better and easier?🤔 PS: They also say a little ear wax makes it slide better too🤣

Just a small and simple advice. If you use such a grinder to sharpen an axe you will of course destroy the axe because of the heat the grinder develops. I'm sorry to tell this.

if the hydraulics (hoses etc) can handle it. maybe your thinking is you can work faster b/c it's sharper. just a thought. not being a Meany.

It should reduce the cycle time a little bit on tougher splitting rounds. I think the biggest benefit is the reduced debris from the cleaner splitting.

I don’t know about sharpen your wedge like a knife. Remember it a wood splitter not a pizza cutter. Rachel watch you don’t cut your beautiful hair now plus watch the sparks don’t burn your cute t- shirt . Heath got his hair fix up for the lady on u tube 😊.
