Saying heel more than 1-2 times reinforces you having to beg for the heel. You have to establish yourself as the pack leader. You have to literally lure them with treats to get what you want. To heel you have to have them follow the your hand continuously (baiting) with a treat. He runs off because you're not holding his attention. He has to know that another treat is waiting for him. So lure him with 1 treat or have him eat out of your hand as you're walking. I actually trained my pit to heel with a prong collar which did 80% of the work. He was still reactive and easily distracted. I transferred to an e-collar. I started with the lowest setting for the vibration and shock modes. I also had to use a lot of treats to help him continue making the right decisions. Ignore my command once he gets the audible beep. Ignore 2nd time he got the vibrate which he hates. I only had to use the shock 2 times ever. He responds to the beeps because he knows it will escalate. This was how I had to do it. I got my pit at 2 1/2 yrs old from a dog recuse shelter. He was very stubborn and lacked direction. After 2 months of having him, he knows how to heel, do loose lease walking, speak (bark on command) ," here" (come sit in directly in front of me upon recall), he goes potty on command and now I'm teaching him to guard (me). Once he learns the 1st few and he learns what "good boy or yes" is, it was easy to teach other commands.

@@insidioustrader3924 good advice. I also have been using prong collar and e collar and it made the world of difference. My pup is doing really well with heel and loose leash walking now.

So you would lure to heel position while you are walking, mark "Good" and reward but once he runs out ahead again say "No" and give a quick leash correction and immediately lure him back to your left leg. Repeat. This can be an extremely frustrating scenario but if you can use the correction to help keep him on the left side as you build up the reinforcement history you can overcome this. I would personally look into using a fur saver training collar or a small prong collar for this as well. The correction doesn't need to be very hard, use the minimal correction that you can.

Associate the leash with a treat. Make it a positive experience and praise him after you put it on. After a while he won't make a fuss about it.
