Great video. This was really helpful in that I am relatively new to traditional knives and needed to know the specific techniques to sharpen them as opposed to the modern folders I am used to. Thanks.

I use the ceramic part of my Victorinox sharpener.Because i rotate my knives and that's why they stay sharp(almost) a few times through the sharpener and the knives are perfect again.

Yeah I'm sure I'd have to sharpen a lot more if I only used one knife

Thank you for all the great GEC vids. FWIW, I prop up my waterstones on the sharpmaker (flats) at 40 deg and use the same method as this until I get a burr...then flip. Then I can just move to the sharpmaker's stones to finish the reprofile. Then it's just a matter of using the sharpmaker to do any touch-ups without worrying about angles.

That’s a great idea!

I do the same. But when I need to reprofile, I usually use my 1x30 belt sander CAREFULLY with plenty of water. You can destroy a blade fast if not careful, but leaves a nice strong sharp convexed edge.

Great video, well done and really helpful. Your content is some of the best. I'm wondering, have you ever sharpened a GEC knife sucessfully on the Spyderco Sharpmaker?
@KnifeThoughts
@KnifeThoughts 4 жыл бұрын
I have a Sharpmaker and, to be honest, I don't use it much. I haven't sharpened a GEC on it. With the angles the Sharpmaker gives, you might not hit the Apex. Thanks got the kind words!

You're bend isn't a bend it's because the top of that blade is so flexible, on gecs blades shaped like this. You have to use increasingly light pressure towards the tip so it will sharpen evenly.

@@KnifeThoughts I know it don't make sense. But next time you try it. Look for it bending. Took about 20 blades for me to figure that one out lol

I’m late to traditional pocket knives, I mainly have a good collections of RHK, CRK, spydies, ZT….. so I recently picked up a oil field Jack, the grind is horrible.

The grind or the edge?

@@KnifeThoughts one side of the edge bevel has a wavy spot like someone went a bit heavy on the belt… trying to decide whether to Re grind on a wicked edge.

Yeah I’d rebevel / reapex it. I normally do for my users. The edges near the tip / at and above the belly are pretty much always bad.

If you can't or won't hand sharpen your own pocket knife then you shouldn't own it. Sharpening your own pocket #1 on the man skills list.

You said early on that what you are showing is not the usual way you set up for sharpening. Would have been nice if you showed the way you usually set up. Did not need to be demonstrated but a least a description or showing the different tools used.
@KnifeThoughts
@KnifeThoughts 4 жыл бұрын
No, it's the usual way but with more stones. Typically I just use the Spyderco stone.
