In this video, I expand my gardening space using the sheetmulching techniques. I also raised the elevation of this area by creating a berm garden. 🌱🌱🌱

Thanks for going through your sheet mulching process in such great detail. You’re a great teacher! I used your method to create some new beds last summer and it worked really well. A few stubborn weeds are getting through the mulch this season, but overall it worked quite well and was so much easier than digging out all that turf. I can see that I have to get to work on consistently making clean edges to keep the grass from creeping back in.

Getting rid of lawn is my goal, as well. Love the jazz interludes! I'm also a fan of plain mulch (or even better, wood chips if you can get them). The dyed stuff may have been made from any old wood, including pressure-treated, diseased, or anything. Can't wait to see what you plant in that lovely bed!

Cardboard seems to work nicely. And where I work, we get a lot of that brown paper packing material pre-cut into approximately 2 x 3 rectangles. Laying that stuff down seems to work quite nicely as a sheet mulch. It’s not nearly as thick as cardboard would be but so far laying down and covering it and bark mulch or P gravel or whatever seems to be working quite well. Currently restoring a front yard wheaty overgrown flower bed using this method.

I only wear long sleeved dry-fit shirts! I started wearing them a few years back. I'm addicted to them. They're rated high for uv protection. You are very resourceful! I would have never thought to recycle my own soil. Publix, Food Lion and HT will give you paper bags. I hit them all the same day and had extra. Nice artwork! July? I thought you werec holding out on us!! But then you showed us progression! 😅 Thanks for sharing!

I love how you are utilizing waste to create a new berm! When I buy groceries I always opt for the paper bags - they add up over a yrs time! When I want to sheet mulch, I take a stack of the paper grocery bags and soak them in a tub of water. The seams come undone and the paper softens but still holds its toughness. I unfold the wet sheets and lay them over the area I want to claim for a garden. They drape beautifully! And I find that even one layer thick is very sufficient. It does the job for me!

I have Zoysia grass which also spreads by underground rhizomes. Keep that edge defined so the rhizomes won't have a path into your bed! I dug a 6 inch edge around my garden bed since Zoysia rhizomes are pretty deep (and I'm worried that it still won't be deep enough lol), but Bermuda rhizomes are 1 to 4 inches deep if I'm not mistaken so you don't have to go as deep as I did (definitely double check my info on the depth though and good luck!).

Hey sweetie, love your hard work and great results.,I recently found out after 10+ years that tree roots will grow toward water. I never put that together with septic lines should anyone live in rural area. Not having a tree near the water lines or septic lines will SAVE lots of money from having to pay someone to remove and or replace the lines down the road. I was told that 20 ft away from house or structure would also prevent foundation damage as well. I could take a trip around the world with this lesson learned…..

You did a FANATASTIC job! And no weed mat!! Laying the way you did means it will be easier to keep weeds down and the weeds that do come, will be easier to remove. And the soil is healthier for your plants. For free cardboard, the U-Hauls usually give away used cardboard. You can also check with box stores or your local recycle center. No need to ever buy cardboard!

When I did a surprise garden bed for my parents (who have heavy clay in their yard too), I had to sharpen my shovel with an angle grinder and water the soil just to get the shovel to go in with all of my body weight. I was rassling what felt like 80 pound blocks of soil out of the ground around the entire perimeter of that bed, and when the bed was done and I mentioned that to my dad, he laughed and told me he rolled that ground three times with the heaviest roller on the farm when they first built the house haha they built the house up since our area floods and he was making sure that soil was settled. It was quite the contrast from some of the videos where people slide their edger in like butter and the soil just lifts out of the way lol
