How to Shift From 2 to 4 Wheel Drive on a Chevrolet Truck

Here is how to shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive on a Chevrolet pickup truck with a floor shift lever. Shifting from 2H (2 wheel high) to 4H (4 wheel high) mode is easy and can be done while the truck is in gear and moving. Just shift the floor shifter from 2H to 4H and take your foot off the gas pedal for a second. To shift into 4L mode, get your Chevrolet truck rolling at 3 miles per hour, then put the automatic transmission into neutral and quickly move the floor gear shift lever to 4L (4 wheel drive low) without stopping in neutral. Then put the automatic transmission into Drive and you're done. Neutral on the floor shifter should be used if you are towing your truck. The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. This should also work on GMC trucks, which are also made by general motors. Putting a truck into 4 wheel drive mode is easy if you know how to do it.

I was putting the 4wheel drive in while in neutral. (4hi) I have yet to do 4lo since replacing the actuator but when I tried the first time in 4lo I had it in neutral sitting still. It was definitely grinding before I just shoved it in. It didn't work bc the actuator was bad.

Great explanation! I've had a 96 1500 for almost 2 years, and was wondering about the proper way to do this . Done it twice, but didn't know to go quickly into 4lo. Tonight we are getting 3-8 inches of snow, so now i'm all set, thanks!

You really only need 4H for snow, 4low is for when your stuck or going through tough areas and need lots of torque as you can’t go fast in 4lo

I'm years late, but thank you. I've owned my '89 Silverado 1500 for 3 years or so now, and never drove it enough to change it from 2HI to 4LO but now that I know how to correctly, I can finally hit up some trails with my buddies. I didn't have my license is why I didn't drive it much (I'm 2 months away from turning 19yo now) great video!

I know it’s an old video but I was thinking my transfer case was out when I stoped the transfer case in neutral and tried to go into 4low and all it would do is grind but thanks to your video and see how you skip Neutral and go straight into 4 low really fast and it does it with no grinding at all now and works great! I was actually scared to put it in 4 low that fast thinking I would chip off a tooth inside transfer case lol And just so you know your like the only video on here that explains it so perfectly so thanks man!

I thought it read to be stopped and in N (at the automatic transmission) for 4-low, although a very slow speed is possible (which I never do). The swift action into 4-low is key - don't be afraid. Not a slam, but a firm, continuous, complete shift.

The floor shifter is pretty neat. I have the push button without Neutral. Shifting between 2HI and 4HI is seamless. For 4LO, I swap into 4HI (or you can press 4LO and it will do it for you.) then stop, and leave it in drive while you creep forward. When the truck says you are at the right speed (about 2-4 mph), it will kick into 4LO on it’s own. Repeat the process to go back from 4LO to 4HI, then press 2HI to go back to RWD only.

hoohoohoblin So my 4 low worked by doing this. The only thing in worried about now is if I park somewhere and get stuck and can't move the 2-3mph to engage 4 low. My 4 hi doesn't want to kick in. Is there anyway to lock in 4 low if you get stuck from where you park? I probably just need to get chains.

GM should give the gmt400s some options for 4x4 with manual 4wd shifter in this video (live front axle with optional locker or limited slip no open differential) and z71 with optional push button 4wd (IFS with standard locker). Same for gmt900 and up 2500s/3500s.

Thanks. Most people who buy the truck used, or who never go off road either don't know or forget how to shift it into 4 wheel drive. You can do damage if you shift into 4 wheel low at a high speed, so it's a good idea to know what you're doing before you try to use the shifter.

I just had my transfer case replaced, but I noticed that it vibrates a little, wasn’t sure if that was normal or not. I never noticed it before because I took my truck in the shop to get the transmission replaced… and they told me my transfer case was needing replaced aswell so I never used it before so I don’t know if it used to vibrate or not

+hoohoohoblin +Alberta McCrary Yeah, this was great. I just picked up my first 4WD truck - a 1994 Suburban - and needed to figure out how to switch to 4WD. The previous owner told me I "had to put it in neutral" to shift to four-high. When I put the transmission and the transfer case in neutral, and then to 2WD or 4WD, it wanted to grind on me. This was super helpful in guiding me to shift safely without destroying my transfer case.

+Alberta McCrary I'd say that, if the truck is now in gear and drives properly, the transmission is okay. If the brakes sound like they're grinding, it could mean that the brake pads wore down and you're rubbing against the rotor. That'll sound like metal-on-metal, and you'll want to stop driving it until you get it fixed. Completely unrelated to the transfer case, though. I'll defer final judgement to +hoohoohoblin, though.

fFour wheel drive really doesn't help when you have a road that's iced over. If all four of your wheels are on a slick surface and lose grip, then you'll have four wheel spinning instead of just two. cautious driving will serve you a lot better than relying on a 4wd.

I can definitely throw my 95 in 4 high at any speed the highest I’ve done it at was 60 but I wouldn’t do it any faster than that but I just throw it in neutral pull it down into 4hi and back into drive and it always engages never had any problems. I’d be terrified to even try the 4low while rolling I always do the neutral 4lo reverse drive because that’s what I was taught I’d never do it rolling. Or shifting it into 4hi while in gear

When I do exactly this it grinds when I go into 2lo or when I go from 2lo back to 2hi. Only way I've been able to get it to not grind is to put it in neutral and turn the engine off then shift then turn the truck back on. Which depending on the situation required several engine on/off cycles to get to my destination. I have replaced the tcase fluid with the proper stuff and nothing changed. Any ideas? The truck came from California with 100k on it when I got it so 4wd probably never used for first 100k. It's a 1994 k1500 blazer

Read on my manual to switch to neutral then 4H when it’s either stopped or moving, switching to 4L requires the same thing but moving, can you switch to 4L while stuck? Or else you have to press the gas and time it at 5km and try and switch it on there.

4low I put the truck in neutral, then 4low, then put the truck in reverse and let the truck back itself up a couple of feet, then put it in drive. Somehow it engages better.

When you go into 4hi does the floor shifter light up like the front axle part? Mine only turns on when I put it into 4lo wondering if 4hi is even working kinda feels like it

To shift from 2h to 4hi let off gas and shift, but when switching to 4low put in neutral while rolling a few mph but if you’re driving a 5sp do I use clutch while rolling to shift into 4low and then let out on clutch ? 98 Chevy 5.0 5sp 4wd

I'm new to 4wd what's the difference between 4l and 4h? Which would I use to tow a car?

+maddcheddah 4 low is only for slower speeds, and doing things like climbing steep hills or driving in mud. On my truck, the manual says to use high gear to pull a trailer, but don’t put it in overdrive. Put it in the next lowest gear.

Thank you, I've always tried to shift in to 4L. It always went in but with a little grinding. But when I took it out it would grind until I shut the truck off.

Yeah… so I’m parked, stuck in some clay slip tried to put it in 4L, it didn’t engage(likely due to not rolling). Resting in Neutral on the floor and drive up top, I moved the top to Park. Yikes, I heard teeth grinding while en route. Only a quick graze with teeth. Turned truck off. I need to drop it down to 4L. After I start the truck, which gear on the steering column should I be in or get to in order to put it in 4L?

I have a 98 2Dr Chevy Tahoe with floor shift 4x4 same as yours so it should be the same for me right.

Nice video, I have a 94 Tahoe, with the same shifter, but for some reason it won't engage and the 4wd light doesn't pop up, but when trying to engage you can hear the clinking noises from the transmission it just doesn't engage. What do you think it could possibly be ? Thanks.

Maybe something is loose or broken in the linkage, the connection between the shifter and the transmission, but I'm not sure. I haven't ever had tor work on mine.

+Zergling maybe you are going to fast. You have to go really slow to get it into four wheel low without grinding it.

You should add what year chevy, they are not all like this, esp pre 87 with auto locking hubs and straight axel. ro unlock the hubs you have to back up after you shift back into 2wd.
